An Evil Couple: Abū Lahab & Umm Jamīl

111:1

تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍۢ وَتَبَّ ۝١

May the hands of Abū Lahab perish, may he perish!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

‘Abdu l-‘Uzza bin ‘Abdul Muṭṭalib, known by his epithet Abū Lahab, was the most vocal opponent of the Prophet Muḥammad in Mecca. He used to follow him around, throw pebbles at his feet and ridicule him. Being the uncle of the Prophet, his words greatly hurt the Prophet’s cause, especially when he used to dissuade outsiders from joining Islam. As a Hāshimite, he signed onto the Quraysh’s plot to assassinate the Prophet.
Abū Lahab’s wife, Umm Jamīl (the sister of Abū Sufyān), fully supported her husband in his hatred and active opposition to Islam. She used to gather thorny branches and dump them at the doorway of the Prophet.
When the Prophet invited his clan, the Banū Hāshim, to his home to present Islam to them, Abū Lahab ridiculed the Prophet and cursed him. This chapter was revealed as a response to Abū Lahab’s action.
