Allāh is the One who raised the heavens, as you can see, without any pillars; then He ‘sat down upon the throne’ and made the sun and the moon subservient to His command. All these wonders of space are moving up to a time appointed by Allāh, and He directs the affairs ofthe universe, making clear the signs of creation so that you may be certain of meeting your Lord.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
It is Allah who raised the heavens without any pillars that you see, and then presided over the Throne. He disposed the sun and the moon, each moving for a specified term. He directs the command, [and] elaborates the signs that you may be certain of encountering your Lord.Ali Quli Qarai
It is Allāh who erected the heavens without pillars that you [can] see; then He established Himself above the Throne and made subject the sun and the moon, each running [its course] for a specified term. He arranges [each] matter; He details the signs that you may, of the meeting with your Lord, be certain.Saheeh International
He is the one Who has stretched out the earth and placed firm mountains and flowing rivers in it; of all the fruits, He has made them in two kinds—wet and dry, sweet and sour, big and small, hard and soft, some grow in winter and some in summer, some on the land andsome on the trees. He makes the night cover the day—in these wonders of the earth are signs for the people who reflect.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
It is He who has spread out the earth and set in it firm mountains and streams, and of every fruit in it He has made two kinds. He draws the night’s cover over the day. There are indeed signs in that for a people who reflect.Ali Quli Qarai

In the earth, there are neighbouring tracts of land with different productivity and gardens of grapes, green crops, and palms, some of whichare twins and some are not twins (i.e., some have common roots and some not)—all different, although they are watered with one and the same water. And among the fruits, We have preferred some over others. Surely in all these are signs for the people who understand.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
In the earth are neighbouring terrains [of diverse kinds] and vineyards, farms, and date palms growing from the same root and from diverse roots, [all] irrigated by the same water, and We give some of them an advantage over others in flavour. There are indeed signs in that for people who exercise their reason.Ali Quli Qarai
And within the land are neighboring plots and gardens of grapevines and crops and palm trees, [growing] several from a root or otherwise, watered with one water; but We make some of them exceed others in [quality of] fruit. Indeed in that are signs for a people who reason.Saheeh International
O Muḥammad, if you have to be amazed at strange things, then know that strange is the Meccans’ saying: “What! when we have become dust after rotting in the grave, shall we indeed be raised up again in a new creation?!” These typesof people are those who have disbelieved in their Lord, they have chains on their necks, and they are the inmates of the Fire, therein, they shall abide!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If you are to wonder [at anything], then wonderful is their remark, ‘When we have become dust, shall we be [ushered] into a new creation?’ They are the ones who defy their Lord; they shall have iron collars around their necks, they shall be the inhabitants of the Fire, and they shall remain in it [forever].Ali Quli Qarai
And if you are astonished, [O Muḥammad] - then astonishing is their saying, "When we are dust, will we indeed be [brought] into a new creation?" Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their Lord, and those will have shackles upon their necks, and those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally.Saheeh International
Some stubborn unbelievers of Mecca used to ridicule the Prophet by saying that if you are true in your warnings about Allāh’s punishment, then we dare you to ask your God to punish us right now: They ask you, O Muḥammad, to hasten the evil (i.e., the punishment) before the good (i.e.,forgiveness and mercy). But they seem to forget the examples of such punishments that have indeed passed before them. Do not they realizethat your Lord is the Possessor of forgiveness for the people despite their transgression, and, at the same time, He is severe in requiting. His forgiveness comes before His anger. So instead of asking for God’s mercy and forgiveness, the Meccans ask for His punishment—that is, indeed, strange!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
They would press you for evil sooner than for good, though there have already gone by before them exemplary punishments. Indeed your Lord is forgiving to mankind despite their wrongdoing, and indeed your Lord is severe in retribution.Ali Quli Qarai
They impatiently urge you to bring about evil before good, while there has already occurred before them similar punishments [to what they demand]. And indeed, your Lord is the possessor of forgiveness for the people despite their wrongdoing, and indeed, your Lord is severe in penalty.Saheeh International

Those who disbelieve in the Qur’ān as asign of Muḥammad’s truth, say: “Why has not a sign, other than the Qur’ān, been sent down upon him from his Lord?” Allāh answers themindirectly by saying to Muḥammad, “You are only a warner of Allāh’s punishment, and there is a guide for every people.” The Prophet’s only duty was to warn them; if they don’t believe, then it is their problem. Muḥammad is not obliged to bring another sign for them.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh knows what every female carries in her womb, what the wombs diminish, and what they increase—everything with Him has a measure.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Allah knows what every female carries [in her womb], and what the wombs reduce and what they increase, and everything is by [precise] measure with Him,Ali Quli Qarai
Allāh knows what every female carries and what the wombs lose [prematurely] or exceed. And everything with Him is by due measure.Saheeh International
“What the female carries” refers to the foetus; “what the wombs diminish” refers to the absence of menses during pregnancy; “what the wombs increase” refers to the occasional bleeding by a pregnant woman. According to a ḥadīth, the menses blood provides the nutrition for the foetus; and in a case where the menses blood is more than the foetus’s need, it is discarded just like menses bleeding.

Moreover, there are angels following human beings in front of him and behind him, watching over him and his actions by Allāh’s command. So beware and remember that surely Allāh does not change the positive condition of any people unless they change the attitude that is within them. And when Allāh intends evil for a people (in response to their transgressions), then there is nothing to turn it back; and they have no protector besides Him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
He has guardian angels, to his front and his rear, who guard him by Allah’s command. Indeed Allah does not change a people’s lot, unless they change what is in their souls. And when Allah wishes to visit ill on a people, there is nothing that can avert it, and they have no protector besides Him.Ali Quli Qarai
For him [i.e., each one] are successive [angels] before and behind him who protect him by the decree of Allāh. Rather these unbelievers are like the one who stretches out his hands towards the water so that it may reach his mouth, but the water does not reach it. Similarly, the prayer of the unbelievers is just lost.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

He (Allāh) sends down water from the sky, then river valleys flow according to their capacity, and the torrent carries along a swelling foam—and a similar scum rises from the material which they melt in the fire for the purpose of making ornament or ware. Thus, does Allāh prove the truth and the falsehood. As for the foam, it passes away uselessly, and as for thewater which profits men, it remains on the earth. Thus does Allāh give parables. (Similarly, faith in God benefits man even after his death, whereas worldly wealth leaves him alone in the long journey to the eternal abode.)S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
He sends down water from the sky whereat the valleys are flooded to [the extent of] their capacity, and the flood carries along a swelling scum. And from what they smelt in the fire for the purpose of [making] ornaments or wares, [there arises] a similar scum. That is how Allah compares truth and falsehood. The unbelievers’ demand that Allāh should send a new sign other than the Qur’ān found some sympathy among some believers who came to the Prophet and said that ‘what is wrong?’ in agreeing to their demand. Allāh revealed the following verses: Even if there had been a Qur’ān with which the mountains could be moved or the earth could be cleft or the dead could be raised to life and be made to speak, still, O Muḥammad, these unbelievers would not believe. Do not they understand that Allāh is not boundby their wishes? Rather, the command altogether is Allāh’s. Have not the believers given up all hope about the Meccan unbelievers after knowing that if Allāh had pleased, He would have guided all the people by force? The unbelievers of Mecca will continue to be smitten by a calamity because of what they wrought, or, at the least, the calamity will decend near their habitation, until Allāh’s promise abouttheir final defeat comes about. Surely Allāh does not fail in His promise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Is He (Allāh) who watches over and knows every soul for what it earns, to be associated with false gods who can’t even help themselves?! No,never. Yet they, the unbelievers of Mecca, ascribe partners to Allāh. O Muḥammad, say: “Name them (i.e., Allāh’s so-called partners)! Or, byassociating the idols with Allāh, do you intend to inform Him of what He does not know on the earth?! And [the believers among] those to whom We have given the [previous] Scripture rejoice at what has been revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], but among the [opposing] factions are those who deny part of it [i.e., the Qur’ān]. Say, "I have only been commanded to worship Allāh and not associate [anything] with Him. To Him I invite, and to Him is my return."Saheeh International

Thus We have revealed the Qur’ān as a judgement in the Arabic language; and if you, O Muḥammad, follow their whims after the knowledge which has come to you, then you shall have no friend and no protector against Allāh.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Thus We have sent it down as a dispensation in Arabic; and should you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you shall have against Allah neither any guardian nor defender.Ali Quli Qarai
And thus We have revealed it as an Arabic legislation. And if you should follow their inclinations after what has come to you of knowledge, you would not have against Allāh any ally or any protector.Saheeh International

We have indeed sent messengers before you, and We gave them wives and children. They lived among their people like human beings withtheir families. And it is not within the independentpower of a messenger to bring a miracle except with Allāh’s permission. Every term of death, sustenance, etc., whichAllāh has decreed has a Book—S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Certainly We have sent apostles before you, and We appointed for them wives and descendants; and an apostle may not bring a sign except by Allah’s leave. There is a written [ordinance] for every term:Ali Quli Qarai
And We have already sent messengers before you and assigned to them wives and descendants. And it was not for a messenger to come with a sign except by permission of Allāh. For every term is a decree.Saheeh International

O Muḥammad, We shall either show you some of the chastisements with which We threaten the Meccan unbelievers or We shall cause you to die before that—the decision of chastisement reststotally with Allāh. Your obligation is only to deliver the message, and Ours is the reckoning of the people’s beliefs and deeds.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Whether We show you a part of what We promise them, or take you away [before that], your duty is only to communicate, and it is for Us to do the reckoning.Ali Quli Qarai
And whether We show you part of what We promise them or take you in death, upon you is only the [duty of] notification, and upon Us is the account.Saheeh International

Do not the unbelievers of Mecca see how We approach the earth, diminishing it in its extremities?Only Allāh judges the proper timefor a people’s doom—there is none to repel His judgement, He is swift in reckoning.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Have they not seen how We visit the land diminishing it at its edges? Allah judges, and there is none who may repeal His judgement, and He is swift at reckoning.Ali Quli Qarai
Have they not seen that We set upon the land, reducing it from its borders? And Allāh decides; there is no adjuster of His decision. And He is swift in account.Saheeh International
It means: “Do not they see how We approach the inhabitants of the earth, diminishing their increasing numbers by death and chastisement?”

Those unbelievers who were before them had indeed devised evil plans, but Allāh’s is the final devising altogether. He knows what every soul earns, and the unbelievers shall soon come to know whose will be the ultimate abode of Paradise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Those who were before them [also] schemed; yet all devising belongs to Allah. He knows what every soul earns. Soon the faithless will know in whose favour the outcome of that abode will be.Ali Quli Qarai
And those before them had plotted, but to Allāh belongs the plan entirely. He knows what every soul earns, and the disbelievers will know for whom is the final home.Saheeh International
Those who disbelieve say to Muḥammad, “You are not a messenger.” O Muḥammad say, “Allāh is sufficient as a witness between me and you, and also he who has the knowledge of the Book.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The faithless say, ‘You have not been sent [by Allah].’ Say, ‘Allah suffices as a witness between me and you, and he who possesses the knowledge of the Book.’Ali Quli Qarai
And those who have disbelieved say, "You are not a messenger." Say, [O Muḥammad], "Sufficient is Allāh as Witness between me and you, and [the witness of] whoever has knowledge of the Scripture."Saheeh International
Besides Allāh, who had the full knowledge of the Qur’ān? None can fit this description but Imām ‘Ali bin Abi Tālib who has been introducted by the Prophet as “the gate to the city of knowledge.” For supporting aḥādith on this interpreation of the verse, see Al-Mizān, vol. 11 (Arabic) p. 387.
