Many narrations in the Sunni and Shī‘a aḥādīth say that the Prophet Muḥammad (peace be upon him) applied verse seven of this chapter on ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib and his followers. See, for example, Ḥākim al-Ḥaskāni in his Shawāhidu ’t-Tanzīl, Ibn Ḥajar al-Makki in his aṣ-Ṣawā‘iqu ’l-Muḥriqah, as-Suyūṭi in Durru ’l-Manthūr as well as aṭ-Ṭabari in his tafsīr, vol. 30, p. 171 and many others have quoted a number of narrations from Ibn ‘Abbās, Jābir bin ‘Abdullāh al-Anṣāri, and Abu Barazah on this issue.
