Those husbands who accuse their wives of adultery and they have no witnesses except themselves, then the testimony of one of them (i.e., husband) should be taken four times bearing Allāh to witness that “he is surely among the truthful people;”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
As for those who accuse their wives [of adultery], but have no witnesses except themselves, the testimony of such a man shall be a fourfold testimony [sworn] by Allah that he is indeed stating the truth,Ali Quli Qarai

In such cases where the husband accuses his wife, and both testify five times in their own defence, the couple will separate from each other, their marriage will be annulled, and they cannot remarry one another ever. This is known as the law of “li‘ān – the oath of condemnation” in Islamic laws.

Those who came up with the slander are indeed a group from among yourselves, i.e., the hypocrites and mischief-mongers. O Muslims, do not consider this an evil unto you; nay, it is a blessing for you in disguise so that you may be able to distinguish the true followers from the hypocrites and so that you may be vigilant against those who create mischief in society. Everyone of them shall be charged for the sin that they have earned; and as for ‘Abdullāhbin Ubay, who played the major role among them, he shall have a grievous chastisement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed those who initiated the calumny are a group from among yourselves. Do not suppose it is bad thing for you. No, it is for your good. Each man among them bears [the onus for] his share in the sin, and as for him who assumed its major burden from among them, there is a great punishment for him.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, those who came with falsehood are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof - for him is a great punishment [i.e., Hellfire].Saheeh International
The following verses talk of the incident of al-Ifk (false accusation) in which some hypocrites attempted to hurt the Prophet Muḥammad by spreading scandalous rumours about one of his wives. There is a discrepancy among the narrations about the identity of that lady: the Sunni narrations mention the name of ‘Ā’isha while the Shī‘ī narrations mention the name of Māriya. Nonetheless, these verses only talk about the lady’s innocence in that specific incident and do not declare her as infallible in all matters. (Contrast these verses with 33:28-34 and, 66:1-5.) Moreover, the verses apply to any case of false accusation.
For a critical look at both types of narrations, see aṭ-Ṭabāṭabā’ī, al-Mizān, vol. 15 (Arabic), p. 96-106.
Then commenting on the attitude of the general public that enjoys gossip, Allāh says: Instead of heeding to such rumours, why did not the believing men and the believing women think well of their own people and say: “This is just a clear lie?”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
When you [first] heard about it, why did not the faithful, men and women, think well of their folks, and say, ‘This is an obvious calumny’?Ali Quli Qarai
Why, when you heard it, did not the believing men and believing women think good of themselves [i.e., one another] and say, "This is an obvious falsehood"?Saheeh International
You should have believed only if they come forth with four witnesses in support of their accusation! And since they have not produced the witnesses, then they are liars in the sight of Allāh.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Why did they not bring four witnesses to it? So when they could not bring the witnesses, they are liars in Allah’s sight.Ali Quli Qarai
Why did they [who slandered] not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then it is they, in the sight of Allāh, who are the liars.Saheeh International

When you received the slander with your tongues and then uttered it with your mouths (that is, from mouth to mouth without reflecting on what you have heard) concerning what you had no knowledge—and you considered it a light manner, while to Allāh it is a great matter when it involves a person’s honour!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Rizvi (Explanatory)
And tell the faithful women to cast down their looks and to guard their private parts, and not to display their charms, beyond what is [acceptably] visible, and let them draw their scarfs over their bosoms, and not display their charms except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their husband’s sons, or their brothers, or their brothers’ sons, or their sisters’ sons, or their women, or their slave girls, or male dependants lacking [sexual] desire, or children who are not yet conscious of female sexuality. And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof and to wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests and not expose their adornment [i.e., beauty] except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women, that which their right hands possess [i.e., slaves], or those male attendants having no physical desire, or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women. And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allāh in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.Saheeh International
The word “zīnah—beauty” refers to the natural beauty of women; and the word “except what is apparent of it” refers to the face and hands.
The “khumur” is plural of “khimār” which means the veil covering the head. See any Arabic dictionary like Lisānu ’l-‘Arab, Majma‘u ’l-Baḥrayn or al-Munjid. Al-Munjid, which is the popular dictionary in the Arab world, defines al-khimār as “something with which a woman conceals her head – ما تغطي به المرأة رأسها.” So the words “draw their head-covering over their bosoms” means that cover the head and use the loose ends of the scarf to conceal the neck and the bosom.

When your slaves ask for the written contract for their freedom, then write the contract for them if you know of any goodness in them and give to them of Allāh’s wealth that He has given to you. You may either provide them from the charity or reduce the amount they have to pay you for their freedom. Then referring to a horrible custom common among some Arabs before Islam, Allāh says: Do not compel your slave girls to prostitution (more so if they desire chastity) for the sake of the frail goods of the present world. And whosoever compels them to prostitution, then surely Allāh, in light of their compulsion, is Forgiving, Merciful to such slave girls.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh is the Light of the heavens and the earth. As for the faithless, their works are like a mirage in a plain, which the thirsty man supposes to be water. When he comes to it, he finds it to be nothing; but there he finds Allah, who will pay him his full account, and Allah is swift at reckoning.Ali Quli Qarai
But those who disbelieved - their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland which a thirsty one thinks is water until, when he comes to it, he finds it is nothing but finds Allāh before him, and He will pay him in full his due; and Allāh is swift in account.Saheeh International

It is so dark that when he holds out his hand, he is almost unable to see it. Indeed, a person whom Allāh has not provided a light, he has no light.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh indeed is in total control; for example, He can use the clouds for the good of the people or for the chastisement of the people: Do not you see that Allāh shoves the clouds, then brings them together, then He makes them into cumulus clouds; it is then you see that the rain comes forth from their midst? Do not yousee that He sends down from the mountains ofclouds in the sky hailstones—afflicting thereby whomsoever He pleases and turning it away from whomsoever He pleases? Do not you seethat the flash of the clouds’ lightning almost takes away the sight?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Have you not regarded that Allah drives the clouds, then He composes them, then He piles them up, whereat you see the rain issuing from its midst? And He sends down hail from the sky, out of the mountains that are in it, and He strikes with it whomever He wishes, and turns it away from whomever He wishes. Allāh has promised some of you who truly believe and diligently do good that: • He will most certainly make them rulers of the world as He made rulers those who had come before them like Dāwud and Sulaymān; • and that He will establish for them their religion —Islam— which He has chosen for them; and He will surely replace their fear with security—they shall be serving Me, without associating anything with Me. And whosoever is ungrateful after that fulfillment of the promise, they surely are the sinful people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Allah has promised those of you who have faith and do righteous deeds that He will surely make them successors in the earth, just as He made those who were before them successors, and He will surely establish for them their religion which He has approved for them, and that He will surely change their state to security after their fear, while they worship Me, not ascribing any partners to Me. Whoever is ungrateful after that—it is they who are the transgressors.Ali Quli Qarai
Allāh has promised those who have believed among you and done righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession [to authority] upon the earth just as He granted it to those before them and that He will surely establish for them [therein] their religion which He has preferred for them and that He will surely substitute for them, after their fear, security, [for] they worship Me, not associating anything with Me. (1) Privacy in Family: O you who believe! Refers to the Islamic greeting (salām) which has been taught by Allāh in 4:86.
The believers are only those who believe in Allāh and His Messenger (i.e., Muḥammad); and when they are with him on a momentous issue, they do not go away until they have asked his permission. So, O Muḥammad, those who ask your permission, they are the ones who believe in Allāh and His Messenger. And when they ask your permission to go for some of their affairs, then you may give permission to whomsoever you please; and ask forgiveness for them from Allāh; surely Allāh is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed the faithful are those who have faith in Allah and His Apostle, and when they are with him in a collective affair, they do not leave until they have sought his permission. Indeed those who seek your permission are those who have faith in Allah and His Apostle. So when they seek your permission for some of theirs [private] work, give permission to whomever of them you wish and plead with Allah to forgive them. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai

Indeed, those who ask your permission, [O Muḥammad] - those are the ones who believe in Allāh and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission due to something of their affairs, then give permission to whom you will among them and ask forgiveness for them of Allāh.
