O Muslims, this is an expression of repudiation from Allāh and His Messenger to those idolaters of Mecca with whom you made an agreement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
[This is] a [declaration of] repudiation by Allah and His Apostle [addressed] to the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty:Ali Quli Qarai
[This is a declaration of] disassociation, from Allāh and His Messenger, to those with whom you had made a treaty among the polytheists.Saheeh International
In the 6th A.H., a treaty known as ṣulḥu ’l-Ḥudaybiyyah was signed between the Prophet and the Quraysh (of Mecca). One of the conditions of this treaty was that any tribe seeking an alliance with the Muslims was free to do so without incurring any penalty or censure from the Quraysh, and likewise, any tribe seeking an alliance with the Quraysh could do so without guilt or hindrance from the Muslims. In the 8th A.H., the Meccan unbelievers broke the treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah by attacking a tribe which was an ally of the Muslims. Their action abrogated the treaty, and the Prophet marched towards Mecca with a force of ten thousand. Prophet Muḥammad entered Mecca almost unopposed on Friday, the 20th Ramaḍān, 8 A.H. One year after the fall of Mecca, the present chapter was revealed. The traditions say that when this chapter was revealed, the Prophet sent Abū Bakr to proclaim the first ten verses of this chapter to the unbelievers of Mecca. But later on, the Prophet sent ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib to take the verses from Abū Bakr and proclaim it at Mecca. Abū Bakr returned from midway to Medina and asked the Prophet whether any revelation came from Allāh against him. The Prophet said, “Jibra’īl came to me and said that, ‘No one can deliver this (message of repudiation) on your behalf except yourself or someone who is from you.’”

So say to the unbelievers of Mecca that, “Although we are free from the obligations of the agreement, you are free to travel about in the land for four months so you may reflect on Islam. And if you do not accept Islameven after reflection on it, then know that you cannot weaken the plan of Allāh, and Allāh will disgrace the unbelievers.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

This is an announcement from Allāh and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage (10th Dhu ‘l-Ḥijjah, 9 A.H.): Allāh and His Messenger are free from any obligations to the idolaters of Mecca. O unbelieversof Mecca, “If you repent, it will be better for you; and if you turn back to idol-worshipping, then know that you cannot weaken the plan of Allāh.” And O My Messenger, “Announce to those who disbelieve a painful chastisement.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
[This is] an announcement from Allah and His Apostle to all the people on the day of the greater Hajj: that Allah and His Apostle repudiate the polytheists: If you repent that is better for you; but if you turn your backs [on Allah], know that you cannot frustrate Allah, and inform the faithless of a painful punishmentAli Quli Qarai
And [it is] an announcement from Allāh and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allāh is disassociated from the disbelievers, and [so is] His Messenger. This declaration covers all the idolaters except those of the idolaters with whom you (you Muslims) made an agreement, and they have not failed you in anything, neither have they backed up anyone against you. So fulfil their agreement till the end of their term; surely Allāh loves the Godfearing who don't break the agreements without any justified reason.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

When the sacred months have passed away, then you have the option of slaying the idolaters wherever you find them (i.e., in the Masjidu ‘l-Haram or outside it; in the sacredboundary or outside it), and take them captives and besiege them and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, perform prayer and pay wealth tax, then leave them alone—surely Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Then, when the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them, capture them and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. How can the unfaithful and treacherous idolaters have an agreement with Allāh and with His Messenger? Allāh and His Messengercannot have an agreement with idolaters except those with whom you made an agreement at the Sacred Mosque—so long as they are honest with you, be honest with them. Surely Allāh loves the Godfearing who are faithful to their treaty.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

How can there be an agreement between the treacherous idolaters and the Muslims? If they get the better of you, they will not observe any bond or treaty about you; they please you with their mouths but their hearts are refusing—most of them are sinners.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
How? For if, they get the better of you, they will observe toward you neither kinship nor covenant. They please you with their mouths while their hearts spurn you; and most of them are transgressors.Ali Quli Qarai
How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.Saheeh International

Long before Islam, the Quraysh of Mecca had established six social positions among themselves in regard to serving the pilgrims who visited Mecca every year. These positions were successively attained by the descendants of Prophet Ismā’īl. They were: 1. Ḥijābah—the guardianship of the Ka‘bah; 2. Nadwah—chairmanship of dāru ’n-nadwa (the meeting house); 3. Rifādah—feeding the pilgrims during ḥajj; 4. Siqāyah—supplying water to the pilgrims; 5. Liwā’—the standard-bearer of Quraysh in war; 6. Qiyādah—the commander of the army. These six positions were accorded great respect, and the whole of Arabia bowed itself before them. O Unbelievers of Mecca! Do you consider the person supplying water to the pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque the same as one who believes in Allāh, the Last Day, and struggles in the way of Allāh?! O Muslims, certainly Allāh had helped you in many battlefields, including the day of Ḥunayn when you were impressed with your multitude and forgot that “victory is only fromAllāh.” But your multitude did not avail you in any way; rather, when the enemy attacked youby surprise, the land became strait for you in spite of its breadth and then you turned back, retreating although you had been forbidden to retreat from the battlefield.S. Fifteen days had hardly passed from the conquest of Mecca when the news came that the tribes of Hawāzin and Thaqīf, who lived a few miles to the southeast of Mecca, had mobilized their forces and were marching against the Muslims (who were still in Mecca). The two tribes had brought their women, children and all the treasures to the battlefield of Ḥunayn to encourage the fighting men and to boost their morale in war. They had taken up vantage positions on the hills at the entrance of the valley.
The Muslims marched from Mecca under the leadership of Prophet Muḥammad. They were twelve thousand in number and well-equipped. Indeed, many Muslims thought that their numerical strength had made them invincible. They arrived at Ḥunayn in the evening of 5th Shawwal, 8 A.H. and camped at the entrance of the valley.
The Muslims began moving towards the valley at dawn the following day. As they entered the valley, the enemy took them almost by surprise, attacking with arrows and then with a general charge in the early hours of dawn.
The Muslim ranks broke up and were stricken with panic. Many of them ran out of the canyon as fast as they could in search of safety. Witnessing his people’s retreat, the Prophet called out, “Where are you running off to?” But nobody paid any attention to him. Then the Prophet asked ‘Abbās, one of the few who remained with the Prophet, to call them back. ‘Abbās called loudly enough to reach all the Muslims; he repeated his call until the Muslims remembered their oaths of allegiance to their Prophet.
At last, all the Muslims returned to the battlefield, refilled their ranks and began fighting. Soon Hawāzin and Thaqīf started to flee, leaving their women, children, and properties to be captured by the Muslims. The Muslims had captured six thousand prisoners and spoils of war consisting of 24,000 camels, 40,000 goats and 4,000 ounces of silver. Later, the tribe of Hawāzin approached the Prophet and requested him to restore their families to them. The Prophet answered that he could not compel his army to forgo all the fruits of victory and that if they wanted their families back, they would have to forgo their properties. The Hawāzin consented to this. The Prophet said, “Those captives who are in my share and that of the children of ‘Abdu ‘l-Muṭṭalib, I give them back to you at once.” The Muslims followed suit, and thus the six thousand prisoners were set free.
The following three verses describe some aspects of this battle:

Surely the number of the months with Allāh is twelve months in Allāh’s ordinance since the day when He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them (i.e., Rajab, Dhu ‘l-Qa’dah,Dhu ‘l-Ḥijjah and Muḥarram) are sacred months; this law is the right religion, therefore, do not be unjust to yourselves by fighting in these months.(Of course, don’t let the sacredness of these monthsmake you weak: fight all idolaters as they fight you all totally. And know that Allāh is with the Godfearing people.)S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed the number of months with Allah is twelve months in Allah’s Book, the day when He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them. Fight all the polytheists, just as they fight you all, and know that Allah is with the Godwary.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, the number of months with Allāh is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allāh [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion [i.e., way], so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allāh is with the righteous [who fear Him].Saheeh International
The Arabs used to observe the sacredness of the four months mentioned above from the time of Prophet Ibrāhīm. But later, they started the custom of “nasi” (lit. oblivion, forgetfulness). Nasi, in that context, meant postponing the sacredness of a sacred month and transferring it to another non-sacred month. When Islam came, it approved the sacredness of the four months but rejected the custom of nasi. Postponing the sacredness of a sacred month is a growth of unbelief whereby those who disbelieved are led astray; one year, they make it “non-sacred,” and another year, they make it sacred. They do this to make it agree with the number of months that Allāh has made sacred, and thus, they make the month “non-sacred” which Allāh had made sacred. Their evil deeds were presented to them in favourable light. Allāh does not guide the unbelieving people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed nasee is an increase in unfaith, whereby the faithless are led [further] astray. They allow it in one year and forbid it another year, so as to fit in with the number, which Allah has made inviolable, thus permitting what Allah has forbidden. Their evil deeds appear to them as decorous, and Allah does not guide the faithless lot.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, the postponing [of restriction within sacred months] is an increase in disbelief by which those who have disbelieved are led [further] astray. They make it lawful one year and unlawful another year to correspond to the number made unlawful by Allāh and [thus] make lawful what Allāh has made unlawful. Made pleasing to them is the evil of their deeds; and Allāh does not guide the disbelieving people.Saheeh International

In Rajab 9 A.H., the news reached Medina that the Byzantine Emperor was mobilizing a huge army at Tabūk to invade Arabia. He had even ordered some of the local rulers of northern Arabia to gather their forces to help his army.
The Prophet of Islam decided to encounter the imperial army and overwhelm an enemy known for its numbers and military equipment. But mobilizing an army that could achieve such an aim was not easy. It was just eight months that the Muslims had returned from the battle of Ḥunayn. Secondly, Tabūk was far away in the northern part of Syria. Thirdly, a severe famine had overtaken Najd and Ḥijāz. Fourthly, the intense desert heat was deadly for this long journey. So, when the Prophet informed the Muslims of his intention to march towards Tabūk and ordered them to prepare themselves, he received two different responses from the people: Those who had entered Islam with guidance and conviction volunteered themselves and their wealth. But those who had accepted Islam in search of material gain or out of fear of the power of Islam (i.e., the hypocrites), they started to look for excuses to justify their disobedience.
However, the Prophet soon gathered an army of 30,000 volunteers with 10,000 horses. Those who could afford it had equipped themselves, and those who were poor were provided for by the wealthy. Many who could not come because of genuine reasons contributed financially. A poor old woman brought few dates as her contribution. Some hypocrites ridiculed her, but the Prophet said that her contribution was more precious in the eyes of Allāh than those who had contributed to show off.
Before leaving, the Prophet appointed ‘Ali bin Abi Ṭālib as his deputy in Medina. When ‘Ali exclaimed, “You are leaving me behind?” The Prophet said, “‘Ali, are you not satisfied that you have the same position in relation to me as Hārūn had in relation to Mūsā (when he left his people to go and receive the Tawrat), except that there is no prophet (nabi) after me?” After this, the Prophet marched towards Tabūk. News of the Prophet’s approach had already reached the Byzantine force, which immediately withdrew to the safety of its border. When the Prophet reached Tabūk, he learnt that the Byzantines and their allies had withdrawn their forces. So the Muslim army camped in Tabūk for twenty-four days to take care of the matters pertaining to frontier security, and then returned to Medina.
Most of the following verses are about the hypocrites (munāfiqūn) who didn’t go with the Prophet and looked for excuses for their recalcitrance in the expedition to Tabūk.
If you do not go forth to fight in the wayof Allāh, then He will chastise you with a painful chastisement, and He will replace another people instead of you, and still, you will not harm Him in any way because Allāh has power over all things.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

If you do not help him (i.e., ProphetMuḥammad), then know that Allāh has already helped him many times. An example of Allāh’s help to Prophet Muḥammad: When the unbelievers of Mecca expelled him, he asked ‘Ali to sleep in his bed so that he could escape from the house (which had been surrounded by armed enemies) without being detected. Abū Bakr joined him on the way. Both of them went to a mountain in the south of Mecca known as Thawr and hid themselves in a cave. The unbelievers of Mecca persistently looked for Muḥammad without avail. Some Qurayshite unbelievers continued their search until they came close to the cave. When the Meccans climbed up to the cave, the foremost among them turned around as soon as he saw that the entrance was covered with cobwebs and that a pair of wild pigeons were on the threshold. When Abū Bakr heard their voices, he trembled with fear, withdrew into a corner and remained motionless. The Prophet (who was the second of the two persons when both were hiding in the cave of Thawr) said to his companion (Abū Bakr), “Do not grieve; surely Allāh is with us.” Then Allāh sent down upon him (i.e., Muḥammad) His tranquillity and helped him with armies of angels which you did not see. Thus He made the word of the unbelievers the lowest—the word of Allāh is the highest; Allāh is Mighty, Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If you do not help him, then Allah certainly helped him when the faithless expelled him, as one of two [refugees], when the two of them were in the cave, he said to his companion, ‘Do not grieve; Allah is indeed with us.’ Then Allah sent down His composure upon him, and strengthened him with hosts you did not see, and He made the word of the faithless the lowest; and the word of Allah is the highest; and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.Ali Quli Qarai
If you do not aid him [i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)] - Allāh has already aided him when those who disbelieved had driven him out [of Makkah] as one of two, when they were in the cave and he [i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)] said to his companion, "Do not grieve; indeed Allāh is with us." And Allāh sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with soldiers [i.e., angels] you did not see and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allāh - that is the highest. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.Saheeh International
After consulting with each other, the Meccans decided to kill the Prophet. By planning to kill the Prophet, they forced him to leave Mecca and seek refuge in Medina. So it can be said that the Meccans “expelled” him. Also see verse 8:30.

O Muḥammad! If your order for jihād had involved a near-worldly gain and a short journey, they (i.e., the hypocrites) would certainly have followed you; but the difficult journey to Tabūk was too far for them. If you ask the reason forstaying behind, these hypocrites will swear by Allāh that, “Had we been able, we would have gone forth with you.” By falsely swearing, they are destroying their own souls; Allāh knows that they are surely liars.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

When the hypocrites offered “excuses” to the Prophet for not participating in the expedition of Tabūk, he accepted their excuses and allowed them to stay behind in Medina. Allāh pardon you! Why did you allow them to stay behind in Medina while you could have refused to accept their excuses so that the truthful ones would become manifest to you and you would have known the liars? (That is, the hypocrites would have stayed behind even if you had not allowed them, and staying behind in Madinah after your refusal would have distinguished the liars and hypocrites from the others.)S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
May Allah excuse you! Why did you grant them leave [to stay behind] before those who told the truth were evident to you and you had ascertained the liars?Ali Quli Qarai
Allāh has pardoned you, [O Muḥammad, but] why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.Saheeh International
The words “Allāh pardon you” do not imply that the Prophet had committed a sin by allowing the hypocrites to stay in Medina, nor was his decision a bad judgement. Allāh Himself, in verses 46-47 below, says that taking the hypocrites would have been a disadvantage for the Muslims. The above verse reveals the lie and hypocrisy of the munāfiqūn by saying that they would have stayed behind even if the Prophet had not allowed them.
In contrast to the hypocrites, those who truly believe in Allāh and the Last Day do not ask your permission to stay away from fighting with their wealth and their selves in the way of Allāh. Allāh knows the Godfearing people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

O hypocrites, you are like those before you who were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children—they enjoyed their share of the worldly life. Those who are rich among your followers, take alms (zakāt) from their wealth —thus you will be cleansing them and purifying them thereby— and pray for them, surely your prayer is a means of comfort for them. Allāh is Hearing, Knowing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Take charity from their possessions to cleanse them and purify them thereby, and bless them. Indeed your blessing is a comfort to them, and Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.Ali Quli Qarai
Take, [O Muḥammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allāh's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.Saheeh International

The Qur’ān does not describe the items which are liable for zakāt, but the ḥadīth has explained them. The following is a list which is, more or less, acceptable by all the Muslims: Coins: 1. gold coins; 2. silver coins. Livestock: 3. camels; 4. cows; 5. goats. Crops: 6. wheat; 7. barley; 8. dates; 9. raisins. Zakāt becomes obligatory only when each of these items reach to their niṣāb (the minimum amount) as explained in the books of Islamic laws.
And O Muḥammad, say to the believers: “Do good deeds, and Allāh will see your good work and so will His Messenger and the chosen believers. And shortly, you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, then He will inform you of what you were doing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
And say, ‘Go on working: Allah will see your conduct, and His Apostle and the faithful [as well], and you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you concerning what you used to do.Ali Quli Qarai
And say, "Do [as you will], for Allāh will see your deeds, and [so will] His Messenger and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you of what you used to do."Saheeh International
And there are others who are deferred to Allāh’s decision: whether He will chastise them or He will turn towards them with forgiveness and mercy. Allāh is Knowing, Wise. (They are in suspension about their outcome as they do not possess anything clear that may lead them to salvation or punishment. Such people are also known as “mustaḍ‘afīn – the meek ones.” See 4:75, 98-99.)S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

And for those hypocrites of Banū Ghanam who built a mosque to harm the Muslims, to disbelieve, to divide the believers and to provide a hideout for those who fought against Allāh and His Messenger in the past —and, of course, they will still swear that “We desired nothing but good”— Allāh testifies that they are indeed liars.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
As for those who took to a mosque for sabotage and for defiance, and to cause division among the faithful, and for the purpose of ambush [used] by those who have fought Allah and His Apostle before—they will surely swear, ‘We desired nothing but good,’ and Allah bears witness that they are indeed liars.Ali Quli Qarai

Some people from the tribe of Banū ‘Amr bin ‘Awf built a mosque which became famous as Masjid Qubā. They requested the Prophet to honour them by visiting the mosque and praying in it. The Prophet accepted their request.
Sometime after that, a group of hypocrites from their sister tribe known as Banū Ghanam bin ‘Awf built a mosque just near Masjid Qubā. They were friends of a monk known as Abū ‘Āmir. The latter had promised the group of Banū Ghanam bin ‘Awf that he was going to Byzantine and would return with a Christian army to oust the Prophet and the Muslims from Medina. The mosque they built was not for worshipping Allāh, but only a cover for harbouring the enemies of Allāh and His Messenger. By building this new mosque, they also intended to divide those who attended the prayers in Masjid Qubā. Later, the mosque built by the hypocrites became famous as Masjid Ḍirār.
The hypocrites of Banū Ghanam approached the Prophet and requested him to honour them also by visiting their mosque and praying in it. This request was made when the Prophet was getting ready for the expedition of Tabūk. The Prophet said that he would see into it when he came back from Tabūk.
While the Prophet was returning from the expedition of Tabūk, Allāh revealed the following verses about Masjid Ḍirār:

So O Muḥammad! Never stand in it for performing prayers! The Prophet ordered ‘Āsim bin ‘Awf al- ‘Ijlāni and Mālik bin ad-Dhakhsham to destroy and burn the Masjid Ḍirār. I swear that the mosque founded upon piety from the very first day —i.e., Masjid Qubā— it is worthier that you should stand in it for prayersbecause therein are men who love to cleanse themselves spiritually as well as physically; and Allāh loves those who cleanse themselves.S. Allāh has indeed bought from the believers their lives and their possessions so that, in return, they shall have the Garden. How do the believers ‘sell’ their lives and possessionsto Allāh? They fight in the way of Allāh—they kill and are killed. The reward of their sacrificeis a promise binding upon Him in the Tawrāt, the Injīl, and the Qur’ān. And who can live up to his promise more than Allāh? So, O believers, rejoice in the bargain that you have made with Him—that is, indeed, the great achievement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed Allah has bought from the faithful their souls and their possessions for paradise to be theirs: they fight in the way of Allah, kill, and are killed. A promise binding upon Him in the Torah and the Evangel and the Quran. And who is truer to his promise than Allah? So rejoice in the bargain you have made with Him, and that is the great success.Ali Quli Qarai

Who are the believers? The believers, as individuals, are those who repent, serve Allāh, praise Him, ‘travel’ to mosques, bow down and prostrate in prayers. And as members of society, they are those: who command the good and forbid the evil, and protect the limits imposed by Allāh. O Muḥammad, give good news to the believers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

[Such believers are] the repentant, the worshippers, the praisers [of Allāh], the travelers [for His cause], those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], those who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and those who observe the limits [set by] Allāh. And give good tidings to the believers.Saheeh International

Ibrāhīm asked forgiveness for his uncle only because of a promise he had made to him when he thought that his uncle was ignorant, not an obstinate unbeliever. As already mentioned in verse 38 and onwards in this chapter that when the Prophet went on the expedition of Tabūk, some people remained behind in Medina. Among those who stayed behind were Ka'b bin Mālik, Murārah bin ar-Rabī' and Hilāl bin Umayyah. These three persons were not hypocrites; they just remained behind out of negligence. When the Muslims returned from Tabūk, they ignored these three persons and did not even talk to them. Even their wives came to the Prophet and asked whether they should leave them. The Prophet said, “No, but don’t let them sleep with you.” Faced with such rejection, the three left the city of Medina and went to the hills. There they even separated from each other, and for the next fifty days, they just prayed and cried to Allāh for the forgiveness of their sin. Allāh accepted their prayers and forgave them: And Allāh turned with forgiveness to the three who were left behind by their own choice. They did not realize the seriousness of their sin until when the earth, with all its breadth, became strait for them, and their souls became strait for themselves. And they came to know that there was no shelter from Allāh except in Him, so they started to pray for forgiveness. Then Allāh turned towards them with forgiveness so that they might also turn towards Him withobedience. Surely Allāh is the Oft-forgiving, the Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
—and to the three who were left behind. When the earth became narrow for them with [all] its expanse, and their own souls weighed heavily on them, and they knew that there was no refuge from Allah except in Him, then He turned clemently toward them so that they might be penitent. Indeed Allah is the All-clement, the All-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
And [He also forgave] the three who were left alone [i.e., boycotted, regretting their error] to the point that the earth closed in on them in spite of its vastness and their souls confined [i.e., anguished] them and they were certain that there is no refuge from Allāh except in Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. Indeed, Allāh is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.Saheeh International

It is not right for the people of Medina and for those Bedouins who dwell around them to hold themselves back from accompanying the Messenger of Allāh in the battle, and to prefer their own lives to his. This is so because they will not be stricken —by thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger in the way of Allāh, neither will they tread any path which enrages the unbelievers, nor will they gain anything from any enemy— but that a righteous deed is written for them as compensation for their problems. Verily Allāh does not waste the reward of the good doers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
It is not fitting for the people of Madinah and the Bedouins around them to hang back behind the Apostle of Allah and prefer their own lives to his life. That is because they neither experience any thirst, nor fatigue, nor hunger, in the way of Allah, nor do they tread any ground enraging the faithless, nor do they gain any ground against an enemy but a righteous deed is written for them on its account. Indeed Allah does not waste the reward of the virtuous.Ali Quli Qarai
It was not [proper] for the people of Madīnah and those surrounding them of the bedouins that they remain behind after [the departure of] the Messenger of Allāh or that they prefer themselves over his self. That is because they are not afflicted by thirst or fatigue or hunger in the cause of Allāh, nor do they tread on any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict upon an enemy any infliction but that it is registered for them as a righteous deed. Indeed, Allāh does not allow to be lost the reward of the doers of good.Saheeh International
Nor do they spend anything, small or great, nor do they traverse any valley, but that it is written for them so that Allāh may reward them with the best of what they were doing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

And it is not right for the believers to go forth all together for physical jihād. So why should not a group from every community of theummah go forth to acquire knowledge in religion and to warn their people when they return to them—so that they may beware of their duties towards the Lord and avoid His displeasure.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Yet it is not for the faithful to go forth en masse. But why should not there a group from each of their sections go forth to become learned in religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, so that they may beware?Ali Quli Qarai
And it is not for the believers to go forth [to battle] all at once. For there should separate from every division of them a group [remaining] to obtain understanding in the religion and warn [i.e., advise] their people when they return to them that they might be cautious.Saheeh International
Islam gives top priority to the seeking of religious knowledge; this can best be understood from the following verse which says that not all should go for jihād, rather some should spend their lives in seeking religious knowledge and teaching others. This verse also exempts the seekers of religious knowledge from participating in jihād. The term “religious knowledge” is used here in the broadest sense of the word, it is not restricted to Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh).
This is a clear indication of Allãh’s vision for a Muslim society: there should always be “a group of people learned in religion” who in turn will guide the rest of “the community” towards the right conduct. This can also explain the need for jurists (mujtahidin) who become the source of guidance for the community.

But as for those in whose hearts is disease, it has [only] increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil. And they will have died while they are disbelievers.Saheeh International

Whenever a chapter is revealed, the expressions on the faces of the hypocrites betraythem, and so they look at one another as if asking: ‘Does anyone see you?’ Then they turn away.
