O People! Guard yourself againstdispleasing your Lord Who created you from a single being (Adam) and created its spouse (Hawwā) from the same essence, and then He spread from both many men and women. Guard yourself against displeasing Allāh in Whose name you beseech one another, and be mindful of the relatives. Verily Allāh is vigilant over you.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O mankind! Be wary of your Lord who created you from a single soul, and created its mate from it, and from the two of them scattered numerous men and women. Be wary of Allah, in whose Name you adjure one another and [of severing ties with] blood relations. Indeed Allah is watchful over you.Ali Quli Qarai
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allāh, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allāh is ever, over you, an Observer.Saheeh International

O the custodians, you should give the orphans their property which is in your trust when they attain legal age and maturity tohandle their own affairs. Do not substitute the worthless things for their good ones, and do not devour their property by making it a part of your property—this is surely a serious crime.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Give the orphans their property, and do not replace the good with the bad, and do not eat up their property [by mingling it] with your own property, for that is indeed a great sin.Ali Quli Qarai
And give to the orphans their properties and do not substitute the defective [of your own] for the good [of theirs]. And do not consume their properties into your own. Indeed, that is ever a great sin.Saheeh International

If you fear that you cannot act equitably toward orphan girls whom you wish to marry, then marry such women as seem good to you— two, three or four. But if you fear that you will not do justice (in matters of maintenance andtime) between your wives, then marry only one or restrict yourself to the slave girls—this is the closest that you may not deviate from justice.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If you fear that you may not deal justly with the orphans, then marry [other] women that you like, two, three, or four. But if you fear that you may not treat them fairly, then [marry only] one, or [marry from among] your slave-women. That makes it likelier that you will not be unfair.Ali Quli Qarai
And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those that please you of [other] women, two or three or four. Do not give to incompetent orphans oridiots your property (i.e., their property) which Allāh has assigned to you to manage for them. Of course, you should provide for them and clothe them with it, and when you interact withthem, then say kind words to them.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Do not give the feeble-minded your property, which Allah has assigned you to manage: provide for them out of it and clothe them, and speak to them honourable words.Ali Quli Qarai
And do not give the weak-minded your property, which Allāh has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness.Saheeh International
Test the orphans in handling their property until they reach the marriageable age; then, if you sense in them the maturity of mind, hand over to them their properties. And when you take a portion of their property as fees for lookingafter them, then do not consume it extravagantly and hastily before they attain legal age. Even intaking the fees, remember this advice: Whoever is free from need, let him abstain from it altogether; and whoever is in need, let him take the normal fee. And when you hand over to them their properties, call witnesses for it even though Allāh is enough as a Reckoner.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Test the orphans when they reach the age of marriage. Then if you discern in them maturity, deliver to them their property. And do not consume it lavishly and hastily lest they should grow up. As for him who is well-off, let him be abstemious, and as for him who is poor, let him eat in an honourable manner. And when you deliver to them their property, take witnesses over them, and Allah suffices as reckoner.Ali Quli Qarai
And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allāh as Accountant.Saheeh International

As for those of your women who commit an act of indecency (i.e., adultery), then call four witnesses from among you to testify against them. In the early days of Islam, a temporary way was prescribed (in the following two verses) to deal with the adulterer and adulteress. The permanent punishment was later explained in a ḥadith of the Prophet. (The last sentence of the following verse clearly indicates that this was a temporary order.)

And do not prevent them, i.e., your wives whom you do not like, from marrying by notdivorcing them so that you may take a part of the dowry which you have given them. (By not divorcing a woman, she will have no option but to apply for khul‘a divorce in which she has to give up some of her dowry.) And [also prohibited to you are all] married women except those your right hands possess. [This is] the decree of Allāh upon you. And lawful to you are [all others] beyond these, [provided] that you seek them [in marriage] with [gifts from] your property, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.Saheeh International
In Islam, there are two types of marriages: permanent and fixed-term marriage; the latter is known as mut‘ah. (This name comes from the word ٱسۡتَمۡتَعۡتُم in the above verse.) The mut‘ah marriage was undoubtedly practised during the time of Prophet Muḥammad (upon whom be peace), Abu Bakr and at the beginning of ‘Umar ibn Khaṭṭāb’s caliphate. Then ‘Umar prohibited mut‘ah marriage. Presently, the Shi‘ah (Ja‘fari) school of law considers it legal in obedience to the Qur’ān and the sunnah (tradition) of the Prophet, as explained by the Imams of Ahlu’l-bayt. But the Sunni schools of law, following ‘Umar’s view, still regard it unlawful. For more on mut‘ah from the legal point of view, see M. H. Kāshifu ‘l-Ghiṭā, The Shia—Origin and Faith (ISP, Karachi, 1982) pp. 196-227; from the perspective of contemporary life and its relation to mut‘ah, see M. Muṭahhari, The Rights of Women in Islam, Tehran (WOFIS, 1981) pp. 25-6.
Whoever among you cannot financially afford to marry chaste believing free-women, then he may marry those believing slave girls whom your right hands possess. Allāh knows best your faith; from His point of view, you —thefree and the slave— are one from the another, all ofyou are from Adam and Hawwa. So marry them with the permission of their masters and give them their dowries as per the norm. Marry theslave girls who are chaste, not those who openly fornicate nor those who take secret illicit lovers. If the slave girls commit indecency after they have been married to you, then they shall be liable for half of the punishment prescribed for the free women. This marriage with slave girls is for the one among you who fears that by remainingunmarried, he might fall into sin. If you exercise abstinence, it is better for you, and Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
As for those of you who cannot afford to marry faithful free women, then [let them marry] from what you own, from among your faithful slave-women. Your faith is best known [only] to Allah; you are all [on a] similar [footing]. So marry them with their masters’ permission, and give them their dowries in an honourable manner—[such of them] as are chaste women, not licentious ones or those who take paramours. But should they commit an indecent act on marrying, there shall be for them [only] half the punishment for free women. This is for those of you who fear falling into fornication; but it is better that you be continent, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
And whoever among you cannot [find] the means to marry free, believing women, then [he may marry] from those whom your right hands possess of believing slave girls. And Allāh is most knowing about your faith. You [believers] are of one another. So marry them with the permission of their people and give them their due compensation [i.e., mahr] according to what is acceptable. Sins are divided into two groups: “major sins” (al-kabā’ir, singular of al-kabīrah) are the sins for which Allāh has clearly warned to punish the sinner by the Hellfire; whereas “minor sins” (aṣ-ṣaghā’ir, singular of aṣ-ṣaghīrah) are the sins which Allāh has prohibited without mentioning its punishment by Hellfire. For details, see the explanation given by the Imams of Ahlul Bayt in Nūru ’th-Thaqalayn, vol. 1, p. 473.

Men are the managers of the affairs of women since Allāh has made some of them to excel some others in matters of responsibilities and because they are required to spend out of their property to provide for their wives. So good women are obedient in lawfulmatters and guard the secrets of their husbands as Allah has guarded. As for those women whose disobedience you fear, then first admonish them politely; ifadmonishing has no effect, then keep away from them in their beds; and lastly, beat them gently. Then, if they obey you, do not seek any means of harassment against them; for Allāh is Most High, Great.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Men are the managers of women, because of the advantage Allah has granted some of them over others, and by virtue of their spending out of their wealth. Righteous women are obedient and watchful in the absence [of their husbands] in guarding what Allah has enjoined [them] to guard. The last part of this passage should not be taken as a license to hurt one’s wife physically, nor should it be considered as cause for the spousal physical abuse seen among some Muslim societies. Most abusive Muslim husbands haven’t even read the Qur’ān. This is a common human problem across racial and faith boundaries. If verbal advice and a cold-shoulder attitude in bed does not work, the Qur’ān gives an option of very gentle physical discipline before going to the final stage of divorce. Imām Muḥammad al-Bāqir clearly explained that as beating with ‘a toothpick.’ Anything beyond that would make the husband liable per Islamic laws. By looking at the excessive violence towards women in pre-Islamic Arab society, this verse, in the words of Amina Wudud, “should be taken as prohibiting unchecked violence against females. Thus, this is not permission, but a severe restriction of existing practices.” Moreover, this is just an option, rather it is a lesser of the two evils (with divorce being the worst of the two). More importantly, if there is no hope of achieving harmony by this option or the law of the land considers it a crime, then it is not permissible to exercise it. A husband can move from the second solution to the final solution of divorce without going to the third one. Finally, in the lives of the Prophet Muḥammad and the Imams of Ahlul Bayt, we haven’t seen a single example where they had resorted to that option.

Not equal are those of the faithful who sit back—excepting those who suffer from some disability—and those who wage jihad in the way of Allah with their possession and their persons. Allah has graced those who wage jihad with their possessions and their persons by a degree over those who sit back; yet to each Allah has promised the best reward, and Allah has graced those who wage jihad over those who sit back with a great reward:Ali Quli Qarai
Not equal are those believers remaining [at home] - other than the disabled - and the mujāhideen, [who strive and fight] in the cause of Allāh with their wealth and their lives. Allāh has preferred the mujāhideen through their wealth and their lives over those who remain [behind], by degrees. And to all [i.e., both] Allāh has promised the best [reward]. As for those whom the angels cause to die while they are still being unjust to themselves, the angels will say, “In what circumstances were you?” They will say, “We were abased, weak andoppressed in the earth.” The angels will say, “But was not Allāh’s earth wide enough so that you should have migrated in it to another place?” These are the people whose abode is hell—it is an evil resort.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed, those whom the angels take away while they are wronging themselves, they ask, ‘What state were you in?’ They reply, ‘We were oppressed in the land.’ They say, ‘Was not Allah’s earth vast enough so that you might migrate in it?’ The refuge of such shall be hell, and it is an evil destination.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves - [the angels] will say, "In what [condition] were you?" They will say, "We were oppressed in the land." They [the angels] will say, "Was not the earth of Allāh spacious [enough] for you to emigrate therein?" For those, their refuge is Hell - and evil it is as a destination.Saheeh International
“Being unjust to themselves” refers to a state in which a Muslim cannot follow his religious obligations because of the socio-political circumstances—the circumstances from which he could have escaped by migration. So “peer pressure” would not be an acceptable excuse on the day of judgement.

O Muḥammad! When you are among them (i.e., your companions) and you lead the prayer for them in an insecure situation, then divide your companions into two groups: let onebe on guard, and let the other party stand with you for prayer and let them carry their arms while praying. Then when they have prostrated themselves in the first rak‘ah (cycle) of the ṣalāt, they should complete their prayer quickly by themselves (i.e., without following theProphet in the second rak‘ah). Then let them go behind you to relieve the other group. And the other party who have not yet prayed should come to you and join you in the second rak’ah ofyour prayer, and let them take their precautions and their arms. And those who disbelieve wish that you should be heedless of your arms and your baggage, so that they may attack you all at once. (“Shortening of prayers” means shortening the prayers of four cycles to two cycles.) Ṣalātu ‘’l-Khawf: When Prophet Muḥammad travelled with Muslims towards Mecca in the 6th AH, the Meccan polytheists prevented them at Ḥudaybiyyah from entering Mecca. Negotiations ensued which ended in the signing of a ten years truce known as the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah. But before the talks began, Allāh informed the Prophet that the small group of Meccan fighters under Khālid bin Walīd was planning to attack them during their prayer.

Mubashshir, Bashīr and Bashar were three brothers of the tribe of Bani Ubayraq in Madinah who entered the house of Qatādah bin Nu‘mān’s uncle and stole his food stock and sword. Then they hid these things in the house of a Jewish person, Labīd bin Sahl. When Qatādah complained to the Prophet, the three brothers wrongfully accused Labīd. When Labīd came to them with his sword and said, “You of the tribe of Bani Ubayraq committed the robbery and then accused me,” they took their words back and apologized. Then these three brothers asked Usayd bin ‘Urwah to go to the Prophet on their behalf and clarify their position. Usayd went to the Prophet and said, ‘Qatādah is wrongfully accusing a respected family of our tribe,’ and implied that the actual thief was the Jew in whose house the things had been hidden. When these three brothers wrongfully accused a Jewish person, the revelation came:

O you who believe! Be maintainers of justice and bearers of witness for the sake of Allāh, even if this testifying is against yourselves or your parents and relatives; it should not makeany difference to you whether the person (foror against whom you are testifying) is rich or poor; Allāh is closest to them both. O Muḥammad, the People of the Book ask you to bring down to them a book from heaven; but even if We send down a book, they will not believe in it. Their demand and attitude is not unexpected, their history is full of disobedience and transgression. Some of their transgressions are the followings:(1) They demanded from Mūsa a greater thing than what they have demanded from you— they said, “O Mūsa! We shall believe in you onlyif you show us Allāh manifestly.” The lightning destroyed them because of their evil demand.(2) Then they took the image of the calf fortheir god after all the clear signs had come to them. Yet We pardoned them this sin; and We gave to Mūsa a clear authority over them.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The People of the Book ask you to bring down for them a Book from the sky. There is a dispute about whether the point of reference of the pronoun “his” in “before his death” refers to the death of the Ahlul Kitāb or Jesus himself. I have preferred the first rendering, and it proves that when the veil of secrecy is lifted from the eyes of the Ahlul Kitāb at their death, they will see Jesus and come to know of his actual status as the Messenger of God, not as an imposter or a son of God. Alas, the belief in that at the moment of death does not benefit anyone (as seen in the example of Pharaoh).

O the People of the Book! Do not exaggerate in the matters of your religion, and do not say anything about Allāh but the truth. One of the truths is the status of Jesus: Verily the Messiah, ‘Isa ibn Maryam is only a messenger of Allāh, His word (which He communicated to Maryam) and a spirit from Him. So, believe in Allāh and His messengers, and do not say, “We believe in three.” If you desist from the trinity, it is better for you. O People of the Book! Do not exceed the bounds in your religion, and do not attribute anything to Allah except the truth. They are asking you for a ruling on the inheritance of a “kalālah.” (In Islamic legal terminology, kalālah means a person who leaves neither parents nor child as an heir; it is equally applied to the heirs of such a person, such as his brother or sister.)O Muḥammad, say that Allāh gives you His ruling about the kalālah: If a man dies having no children, but he has a sister, then she shall have half of what he leaves. And, on the otherhand, he shall be her heir if she dies and has no children. But if there be two sisters, they shall have two-thirds of what he leaves; and if there are more than two siblings, male and female, then the male shall have equal of the shares of two females. Allāh makes clear to you, lest you err; and Allāh knows all things.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
They ask you for a ruling. Say, ‘Allah gives you a ruling concerning the kalalah: If a man dies and has no children [or parents], but has a sister, for her shall be a half of what he leaves, and he shall inherit from her if she has no children. If there be two sisters, then they shall receive two-thirds of what he leaves. But if there be [several] brothers and sisters, then for the male shall be the like of the share of two females. Allah explains [the laws] for you lest you should go astray, and Allah has knowledge of all things.’Ali Quli Qarai
They request from you a [legal] ruling. Say, "Allāh gives you a ruling concerning one having neither descendants nor ascendants [as heirs]." If a man dies, leaving no child but [only] a sister, she will have half of what he left. And he inherits from her if she [dies and] has no child. But if there are two sisters [or more], they will have two thirds of what he left. If there are both brothers and sisters, the male will have the share of two females. Allāh makes clear to you [His law], lest you go astray. And Allāh is Knowing of all things.Saheeh International
In verse 12 of this chapter, the shares of half-brother(s) and half-sister(s) from the mother’s side were explained. The present verse deals with the shares of full brother(a) and full sister(s) or of those half-brother(s) and half-sister(s) who are from the father’s side.
