When ridiculing, bribing, and excommunicating proved useless against the Muslims of the early days of Islam, the leaders of Mecca resorted to physical torture. Among those tortured Muslims were Yāsir, his wife Sumayyah and their son ‘Ammār. Abū Jahl, with the help of other unbelievers, started torturing the whole family mercilessly. ‘Ammār was tied to a pole and forced to see the sufferings of his parents, who were tied by their hands and feet to the ground. When Yāsir and Sumayyah refused to denounce Muḥammad and his message under such severe torture, Abū Jahl and his men murdered them very brutally. Sumayyah became immortal in history by becoming the first woman martyr in Islam. When ‘Ammār saw the suffering and the brutal death of his mother and father, he pretended to reject Islam by uttering the words of unbelief (kufr) and was let go. Then he came to the Prophet bitterly upset over what he had to utter in order to save his life. The Prophet asked, “How was your heart when you uttered those words? Was your heart delighted with what you said?” ‘Ammār said, “No!” Then Allāh revealed the following verse:

Thereafter your Lord will indeed be forgiving and merciful to those who migrated after they were persecuted, waged jihad and remained steadfast.Ali Quli Qarai
Then, indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled [to say words of disbelief] and thereafter fought [for the cause of Allāh] and were patient - indeed, your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and MercifulSaheeh International
Remember the day when every soul shall come disputing for itself—every soul shall be paid in full for what it had done, and they shall not be dealt with unjustly.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The day [will come] when every soul will come pleading for itself and every soul will be recompensed fully for what it has done, and they will not be wronged.Ali Quli Qarai
On the Day when every soul will come disputing [i.e., pleading] for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged [i.e., treated unjustly].Saheeh International

Allāh sets forth a parable: Consider a city that was safe and confident, its provision came to it affluently from every place, but it became ungrateful to the blessings of Allāh, so Allāh made it taste the garment of hunger and fear because of what they were doing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Allah draws a parable: There was a town secure and peaceful, its provision coming abundantly from every place. But it was ungrateful toward Allah’s blessings. So Allah made it taste hunger and fear because of what they used to do.Ali Quli Qarai
And Allāh presents an example: a city [i.e., Makkah] which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allāh. So Allāh made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing.Saheeh International
“…made it taste the garment of hunger and fear” means causing hunger and fear to encompass the city just as a garment encompasses a body.
He also gave them a spiritual blessing: A messenger of Allāh from among themselves certainly came to them, but they rejected him; therefore, the chastisement seized them while they were being sinful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Certainly there had come to them an apostle from among themselves, but they impugned him. So the punishment seized them while they were doing wrong.Ali Quli Qarai
And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers.Saheeh International
So eat of the lawful and good things that Allāh has provided you and be thankful for the blessings of Allāh if it is Him that you worship.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
So eat out of what Allah has provided you as lawful and good, and give thanks for Allah’s blessing, if it is Him that you worship.Ali Quli Qarai
Then eat of what Allāh has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allāh, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.Saheeh International
He has only forbidden you the animal that dies of itself, the blood, the edible parts of the swine and the animal over which a name other than that of Allāh has been recited while slaughtering. But, of course, the one who is compelled in case of an emergency to eat a forbidden item without desiring it or exceeding the limits by eating more than necessary, then there is no sinupon him because surely Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
He has forbidden you only carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been offered to other than Allah. But if someone is compelled [to eat any of that], without being rebellious or aggressive, indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh. But whoever is forced [by necessity], neither desiring [it] nor transgressing [its limit] - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International
The word “laḥm” is normally translated as “flesh;”but in this and similar verse (e.g., 2:173) it does not just mean “the flesh” of swine with the exclusion of its other parts, like fat, etc. In the Qur’ānic Arabic, the word “laḥm” includes the totality of the edible portion of the animal, including its fat. (See the usage of the word “laḥm” in 2:259; 16:14; 23:14.) In conclusion, the prohibition of the laḥm of swine includes lard also. (A.H. Sakr, Pork—Possible Reasons for its Prohibition, n.d., n.d. p. 9)

And do not say what your tongues falsely describes “This is lawful and this is unlawful,” in order to forge the lie against Allāh; surely those who forge the lie against Allāh shall not prosper,S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Do not say, asserting falsely with your tongues, ‘This is lawful, and that is unlawful,’ attributing lies to Allah. Indeed those who attribute lies to Allah will not be felicitous.Ali Quli Qarai
And do not say about what your tongues assert of untruth, "This is lawful and this is unlawful," to invent falsehood about Allāh. Indeed, those who invent falsehood about Allāh will not succeed.Saheeh International

For those who were Jews, We have forbidden them the things that We related to you before (in 6:146); by forbidding those things, We were not unjust to them, rather they were unjust to themselves.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
We forbade to the Jews what We have recounted to you earlier, and We did not wrong them, but they used to wrong themselves.Ali Quli Qarai
And to those who are Jews We have prohibited that which We related to you before. And We did not wrong them [thereby], but they were wronging themselves.Saheeh International
Moreover, surely your Lord to those who do evil out of ignorance, then repent after that and amend their behaviour —surely your Lord after that— is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Moreover, your Lord will indeed be forgiving and merciful to those who repent after they having committed evil out of ignorance and reform themselves.Ali Quli Qarai
Then, indeed your Lord, to those who have done wrong out of ignorance and then repent after that and correct themselves - indeed, your Lord, thereafter, is Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International

Surely Ibrāhīm was a nation by himself, obedient to Allāh, upright in faith, he was not one of the polytheists,S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed Abraham was a nation [all by himself], obedient to Allah, a Hanif, and he was not a polytheist.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, Abraham was a [comprehensive] leader, devoutly obedient to Allāh, inclining toward truth, and he was not of those who associate others with Allāh.Saheeh International
Then We revealed to you, O Muḥammad: Follow the religion of Ibrāhīm, who was upright in faith, and he was not from among the polytheists.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Thereafter We revealed to you [saying], ‘Follow the creed of Abraham, a Hanif, who was not a polytheist.’Ali Quli Qarai
Then We revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allāh.Saheeh International
The Sabbath was appointed only for the Jews who differed about it, and surely your Lord will judge between them on the day of resurrection concerning the issue about which they differed.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The Sabbath was only prescribed for those who differed about it. Your Lord will indeed judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that about which they differ.Ali Quli Qarai
The sabbath was only appointed for those who differed over it. And indeed, your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning that over which they used to differ.Saheeh International

O Muḥammad, call to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good admonition, and argue with them in the best friendly manner. Surely your Lord knows best the person who has gone astray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided aright.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good advice and dispute with them in a manner that is best. Indeed your Lord knows best those who stray from His way, and He knows best those who are guided.Ali Quli Qarai
Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.Saheeh International

O Muslims! If you punish the Meccan unbelievers in retaliation for their tortures, then you may punish them just as you had been punished; but if you exercise patience and let goof your right of retaliation, then certainly it will be better for you, the patient ones.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Should you retaliate, retaliate with the like of what you have been made to suffer, but if you are patient that is surely better for the steadfast.Ali Quli Qarai
And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed. But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient.Saheeh International
O Muḥammad! Be patient, and your patience is only with the help of Allāh. And do not grieve for the unbelievers, and do not be distressed because of the plans that they devise against you.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
So be steadfast, and you cannot be steadfast except with Allah [’s help]. And do not grieve for them, nor be upset by their guile.Ali Quli Qarai
And be patient, [O Muḥammad], and your patience is not but through Allāh. And do not grieve over them and do not be in distress over what they conspire.Saheeh International
