The Treaty of Ḥudaybiyah

48:1

Verily We have granted to you, O Muḥammad, a clear victory in the peace treaty of ḤudaybiyahS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

In the year 6 AH, in Dhul Qa‘dah (which was considered a holy month by both the Muslims and the polytheists of Mecca), the Prophet Muḥammad decided to go for ‘umrah, the minor pilgrimage, to Mecca. He asked the Muslims to accompany him. In all, about 1400 to 1800, people joined the Prophet. At Dhul Ḥulayfa, they put on their pilgrims’ garb and were unarmed except for a sword, a standard weapon always carried by Arabs. When the Muslims reached close to Mecca, the Quraysh got the news and sent Khālid bin Walīd with a cavalry force to stop the Muslims from entering Mecca. The Prophet ordered the Muslims to camp at Ḥudaybiyah. The Quraysh sent three delegations, one after another, who came back with the report that Muḥammad’s intention was not to fight; he just has come for the ‘umrah. But the Quraysh did not heed their delegations. The Prophet sent ‘Uthmān bin ‘Affān, an Umayyad, to Mecca to convince the Quraysh of the Prophet’s peaceful intention. They forced ‘Uthmān to stay in Mecca to find a way of peaceful negotiations. A rumour started among the Muslims that ‘Uthmān had been killed. The Prophet asked the Muslims to reaffirm their loyalty to him by pledging allegiance (bay‘at). This pledge is known as “bay‘atu ’r-riḍwān.” Finally, ‘Uthmān returned and informed the Muslims of the Quraysh’s predicament as they had pledged to their gods not to let the Prophet enter Mecca this year. They also sent a delegate, Suhayl bin ‘Amr, for a treaty. Afer a lengthy negotiation, an agreement was reached between the two parties. That peace agreement is known as Sulḥ Ḥudaybiyah, the Peace-Treaty of Ḥudaybiyah.

48:2

so that Allāh may protect you from the past and future consequences of your policy towards the Meccans and so that He may complete His blessings upon you, and guide you to the right path all the way,S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:3

and so that Allāh may help you with a mighty help.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The first sentence of the second verse is commonly translated as “so that Allāh may forgive you for your past and future sins.” There are several problems with that translation: it goes against the verses with talk about the Prophet’s infallibility; it is not relevant to the issue of peace treaty; and, most importantly, it implies that the Prophet is above the law since he has been granted license to commit sins in the future also! The translation given in the text is based on the literal meanings of gha-fa-ra and dhanb, and makes it relevant to the event. (See aṭ-Ṭabāṭabā’ī, al-Mizān, vol. 18, p. 253.)

48:4

He is the One who sent down tranquillity into the hearts of the believers so that they may increase faith in their existing faith. And how does Allāh create more faith in the believers? Well, to Allāh belongs the ‘armies’ of the heavens and the earth; and whatever He does is based on knowledge and wisdom as Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:5

Allāh has sent down tranquillity so that He may admit the believing men and believing women into gardens underneath which rivers flow, therein to dwell forever; and so that He may acquit them of their evil deeds, and that is in Allāh’s sight a mighty triumph.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:6

After talking about the believers, Allāh talks about the hypocrites who chose to stay behind in Medina and did not join the Prophet, and also the idol-worshippers of Mecca: And He may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the polytheist men and polytheist women who think evil thoughts about Allāh; against them shall be the evil turn of fortune; Allāh is wrathful upon them, He has cursed them and prepared for them the Hell-Fire which is an evil abode. How will Allāh punish them?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:7

To Allāh belongs the ‘armies’ of the heavens and the earth; and Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Consolidation of the Prophet’s Status

48:8

Some Muslims in Ḥudaybiyah doubted the Prophet’s wisdom. To consolidate the Prophet’s status, Allāh says: Indeed, We have sent you, O Muḥammad, as a witness of people’s beliefs and deeds, a bearer of good news for the believers and a warner of the Fire for the unbelievers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:9

So that you, O the people, may believe in Allāh and His Messenger, and support him and revere him; and so that they may glorify Him (i.e., Allāh) in the morning and the evenings.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:10

To further explain the Prophet’s status, Allāh says: Indeed those who pledge allegiance to you, O Muḥammad, have indeed pledged allegiance to Allāh; Allāh’s hand is above their hands in their pledge. And so whosoever breaks his oath, breaks it is only to his own detriment, and whoever fulfills the covenant he has made with Allāh by pledging allegiance to the Prophet, He will give him a great reward.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Those Who Stayed Behind

48:11

Soon, the Bedouins who were left behind will come to you and say: “Our possessions and our families kept us occupied, and therefore we could not accompany you. So ask forgiveness for us.” They speak with their tongues what is not in their hearts! O Muḥammad, say: “So who possesses anything for you against Allāh if He intends to cause you harm or desires to bring you benefit? Indeed, Allāh is well aware of what you do.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Some Bedouin tribes around Medina had refused to accompany the Prophet because they believed that going to Mecca was suicidal—either the Prophet and the Muslims would be killed or would turn back with total humiliation and defeat. After concluding the important treaty in which the Meccans, for the first time, considered the Muslims as equals and made a pact of peaceful co-existence in Arabia, the Bedouins realized their miscalculation. They came to the Prophet and tried to justify their abandonment. But before their arrival, Allah revealed the following verses disclosing their true intentions:

48:12

"You actually thought that the Messenger and the believers would never ever return to their folks! And that was made to seem fair to your hearts by the Shayṭān, and you entertained evil thoughts, and you were truly a ruined lot.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:13

And whosoever does not believe in Allāh and His Messenger, We have prepared a blaze for the unbelievers. None can outstrip Allāh’s decision:S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:14

the kingdom of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allāh; He forgives whomsoever He wants and punishes whomsoever He wants, and Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:15

When you will travel towards the booties so that you can take them, those Bedouins who were left will soon say, “Allow us to follow you.” They seek to change the decision of Allāh! Say to them: “You shall not follow us; this is what Allāh had said earlier.” Then they will say: “You are jealous of us.” Indeed they were not capable of understanding except a little! If they had understood your status, they would not talk in this way.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh had also informed that the Muslims would soon go on a campaign, referring to the Battle of Khaybar, where they would gain many booties. As a consequence of their abandonment last time, the Prophet was instructed not to take the Bedouins to this campaign.

48:16

Say to those left behind from the Bedouins that you will be given a second chance: “You will be soon called for a campaign against a people possessing great power: you will have to fight them till the end or till they become Muslims. So if you obey this time, then Allāh will grant you a good reward, but if you turn away as you turned away previously, He will punish you with a painful chastisement.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:17

Of course, this criticism about the Bedouins does not extend to those who were genuinely unable to accompany the Prophet in the ‘umrah. They were excused based on a general principle: There is no blame on the blind, neither on a lame nor on a sick person. In short, whosoever obeys Allāh and His Messenger, He will admit him in gardens beneath which rivers flow, and whosoever turns away, He will punish him with a painful chastisement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Pledge of Riḍwān

48:18

Allāh was certainly pleased with the believers when they pledged allegiance to you under the tree in Ḥudaybiyah. He knew what was in their hearts; therefore, He sent down tranquillity upon them while they were unarmed in the enemy’s territory; and rewarded them with a victory near at hand (in Khaybar)S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Pledge of Riḍwān refers to the pledge of allegiance (bay‘at) that took place when rumours started that the Meccans had killed ‘Uthmān. To reconfirm the loyalty and resolve of his followers, the Prophet asked the Muslims to pledge allegiance to him. How was the bay‘at done? The men would put their hands in the hand of the Prophet. The women also did bay‘at with the Prophet in the following way: a bucket full of water was placed, with the Prophet dipping his hand from one side, and the ladies, one after another, would dip their hands from the other side – this was done since it is not permissible to shake hands of the opposite gender who are not maḥram to one another. The Prophet asked them to pledge loyalty that “we will be with you in case of war till death,” and in another narration, “we will not flee from the battlefield.”
“Maḥram” means a person who is closely related to another person and there is no requirement of ḥijãb between them.
Does verse no. 18 provide a wide-reaching blanket of pleasure of Allãh for all those who participated in bay‘atu ’r-ridhwãn for the rest of their lives? No. Firstly, it is restricted to the ‘mu’minīn,’ and does not cover the hypocrites. (Also see 9:101) Secondly, it was time-bound; it says, “when they pledged allegiance.” Thirdly, the pledge of loyalty was conditional: “we will not flee from the battle-field.” As verse no. 10 earlier says, “whosoever breaks his oath, breaks its only to his own detriment.” Finally, was this pledge broken? See verse 9:25 about the Battle of Ḥunayn in which only 4 to 8 mu’minīn remained steadfast!

48:19

in which they will capture abundant spoils; and Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:20

Allāh has promised you abundant spoils which you will capture in future. However, He has expedited this one (in Khaybar) for you and has withheld people’s hands from you in Ḥudaybiyah so that it may be a sign of the Prophet’s truth for the believers and so that He may guide you to the right path;S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:21

and other spoils are destined for you which you have not yet captured: Allāh has comprehended them, and Allāh has power over all things.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh’s Help in Ḥudaybiyah

48:22

If those Meccans who disbelieved had fought you in Ḥudaybiyah, they would certainly have turned their backs, and then they would have found neither a protector nor a helper.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:23

Such is the course of Allāh that has indeed existed before, and you shall never find any change in Allāh’s course of action.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:24

He is the One Who held back their (i.e., the Meccans’) hands from you and your hands from them in the valley of Mecca after He had given you victory over them in the form of the treaty of Ḥudaybiyah. And Allāh sees what you do.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:25

Why was this peace treaty important? They, the Meccans, are the ones who disbelieved and prevented you from the Sacred Mosque and also prevented the sacrificial animals that had been set aside by you for sacrifice from reaching their destination. If it had not been for the believing men and believing women inside the city of Mecca whom you don’t know (and you might have trampled them in the war and, consequently, the blame would have been attached to you from them without knowledge on your part)—Allāh would have helped you in destroying the unbelievers. However, Allāh wanted to admit into His mercy whomsoever He pleases. Of course, if they had been separated from one another, We would surely have punished those who disbelieved among them with a painful chastisement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

48:26

Remember when those who disbelieved imbibed into their hearts the prejudice, the prejudice of jāhiliyya and expressed bigotry by refusing entry to the Muslims in one of the sacred months. But Allāh sent down His tranquillity upon the heart of His Messenger and upon the hearts of the believers, and held them to the spirit of righteousness (at-taqwa)—and they were worthy of it and were deserving of it. And Allāh knows everything.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

“Jãhiliyya” literally means “ignorance” and it refers to the pre-Islamic era. Based on this, any behaviour or attitude contrary to Islamic values can be classified as “jãhiliyya”. In this verse, bigotry (ḥamiyyah al-jãhiliyya) and righteousness (taqwa) have been placed as opposites of one another.

48:27

Certainly, Allāh has been rightfully truthful to His Messenger about the dream that you will surely enter the Sacred Mosque, God willing, in safety, with your heads shaven or hair cropped for pilgrimage while you would not be in fear. (The Prophet’s dream was realized the following year, in Dhul Qa‘dah of the 7th year AH.) So He knew what you did not know, and He assigned besides that a victory near at handS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

God’s Promise

48:28

He is the One who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion so that He may make it prevail over all religions, and Allāh is sufficient as a witness to this promise. While the promise of entering Mecca was fulfilled the year after Ḥudaybiyya, the more significant promise will be fulfilled by Allāh before the end of time through a descendant of Prophet Muḥammad known as al-Mahdi (the Guide), whom Muslims universally believe as the Awaited Messiah. The last successor or khalīfa of the Prophet will be from his family, from his progeny, from among the descendants of Fāṭimah bint Muḥammad and ‘Alī bin Abī Ṭālib.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Besides the promise given to the Prophet in the dream that he will enter Mecca and the Sacred Mosque, Allāh gives an even more significant promise: about the global domination of Islam over all religions:
This divine promise has been repeated in 9:33 and 61:9.

The Character of the Prophet and His Followers

48:29

Muḥammad, the Messenger of Allāh, and those with him are firm against the unbelievers but compassionate amongst themselves. (They have a balanced personality: when dealing with enemies, they are firm, but when dealing with friends or non-combatants, they are compassionate.) You will see them often kneeling and prostration in prayer, seeking grace from Allāh and His pleasure; their marks are on their faces (i.e., foreheads) from the impact of the prostration—this is their description in the Tawrāt. And their description in the Injīl is like a seed that gives out its sprout, then strengthens it so that it becomes thicker and then becomes straight on its stem: delighting the farmers. These qualities are given to the faithful followers of the Prophet so that He may enrage the unbelievers on account of them. Allāh has promised those among them who believe and do good deeds, forgiveness and a great reward.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The closest to this description in the existing Old Testament is a short sentence in Deuteronomy 33:1-3; as for the New Testament, a similar parable can be seen in Mark 4:26. The qualities of the Muslims mentioned in the Tawrãt refers to the inner, spiritual dimension while in the Injīl refers to the outer, social dimension.
