The Tribulations of Early Muslims

29:1

Alif Lām Mīm.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Some Muslims rejected Islam because of the threat they faced from the Meccan unbelievers. They did not realize that faith demands steadfastness and sacrifice.

29:2

Do the people reckon that they will be left to say, “We believe,” and they will not be tried? Trial and tribulation are part of human history.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:3

And We certainly have tested those who were before them. Of course, Allāh verily knows those who speak truthfully in professing the faith, and He surely knows the liars.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:4

As for those who do evil and incite the weak Muslims into rejecting Islam, do they reckon that they will outstrip Us? Evil is what they judge! It is entirely upon Us to punish them immediately or to postpone their chastisement till the Hereafter.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(1) Salvation Depends on Jihād

29:5

The true faith prepares the believers for the day of judgement: Whosoever hopes to meet Allāh, then he should know that surely the term of judgement day that has been fixed by Allāh, is surely to come. And nothing from your deeds will be hidden from Him because He is the Hearing and the Knowing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:6

Preparing for the day of judgement involves jihād: Whosoever struggles spiritually as well as physically struggles only for his own gain because surely Allāh is free from the need of the universe.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:7

The consequences of jihād on the day of judgement: And those who believe and do good deeds, We shall surely acquit them of their evil deeds and shall reward them the best of what they were doing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(2) Family Pressure Against Faith

29:8

Some Muslims renounced Islam because of the pressure put upon them by their non-Muslim family members, especially their parents. Allāh commands: And We have enjoined the human being to be kind to his parents, but if they pressurize you to associate with Me something of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. Remember that you all shall return unto Me, and then I shall tell you what you were doing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:9

And those who believe and do good deeds, surely We shall admit them among the righteous people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(3) The Weak Believers and the Hypocrites

29:10

Among the people, there are some who say, “We believe in Allāh,” but when he is persecuted in the cause of Allāh, he makes the persecution of men as if it were God’s chastisement! And if help comes from your Lord, he will verily say, “We indeed are with you.” What, does Allāh not know better what is in the hearts of all beings?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:11

Allāh surely knows the believers, and He knows well the hypocrites.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:12

Those who disbelieve say to those who believe, “Follow our path, and we shall bear your ‘sins.’” They said this to incite the weak Muslims to renounce Islam. Allāh replies to their propaganda as follows: Firstly, they shall never be responsible for any of their sins at all; they surely are liars.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:13

Secondly, they shall certainly carry the burdens of their sins and the burden of misleading others in addition to their own burdens. Thirdly, they shall verily be questioned on the day of resurrection about the lies that they were forging.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Tribulations of Past Nations

(1) The People of Nūḥ

29:14

We certainly sent Nūḥ to his people: he lived among them for a thousand years save fifty years, conveying Our message to them. Unfortunately, most did not believe and so the deluge overtook them while they were evildoers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh then describes the example of seven past nations that were also been put to the test and trial.

29:15

However, We delivered him (Nūḥ) and the inhabitants of the Ark, and made it (i.e., the Ark or the Flood) a sign for the nations to come.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(2) The People of Ibrāhīm

29:16

We sent Ibrāhīm and remember when he said to his people: “Worship Allāh and guard yourselves against displeasing Him; that is better for you if you just knew.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:17

“You are only worshipping idols instead of worshipping Allāh, and in the process, you are creating a false statement. Surely those whom you worship other than Allāh do not control for you any sustenance; therefore, seek the sustenance from Allāh. And worship Him and be grateful to Him because to Him you shall be brought back and questioned for your belief and deeds.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:18

“But if you reject the concept of resurrection and the day of judgement, then I would not be surprised because nations before you also rejected that truth; and there is no duty upon the Messenger but a clear conveying of Allāh’s message.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:19

Have they not considered how Allāh originates the creation and then reproduces it? Surely that is easy for Allāh. Similarly, creating human beings and resurrecting them would be equally easy for Him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:20

O Muḥammad, say: “Travel in the vast earth and see how He originates the creation and then creates the latter creation. Surely Allāh has power over all things.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:21

He punishes whom He pleases and has mercy on whom He pleases; to Him, you shall be turned back.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:22

And you shall neither outwit Allāh in the earth nor in the heavens in fulfilling His promises, and you neither have a protector nor a helper other than Allāh.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:23

As for those who disbelieve in the signs of Allāh in this world and in meeting Him in the Hereafter, they have lost hope in My mercy, and they shall have a painful punishment.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:24

The answer of his (Ibrāhīm’s) people was nothing but what they said: “Kill him or burn him!” So they decided to burn Ibrāhīm but then Allāh delivered him from the fire; in this is surely signs for the people who believe.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:25

And after Ibrāhīm was delivered by Allāh, he said to them: “You verily have taken up idols besides Allāh as a way of maintaining the friendship between yourselves in the present life, but when you face its consequences on the day of resurrection, you shall reject one another, and you shall curse one another. Your abode is indeed the Fire, and you shall have no helpers.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:26

Lūṭ believed in him, and expressed his spiritual journey in the following words: “I am continuously journeying towards my Lord, He surely is the Mighty, the Wise.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:27

As for Ibrāhīm, We granted him Isḥāq and Ya‘qūb, and placed the prophethood and the scripture in his progeny. Thus We gave him his reward in this world, and in the hereafter, he shall most surely be among the good-doers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(3) The People of Lūṭ

29:28

And remember Lūṭ when he said to his people, “Most surely you are committing an indecent act that none of the nations have ever committed before you.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:29

What! you men approach other men with sexual intent and ‘cut’ the way of procreation, and you commit the evil in your clubs?!” The answer of his people was nothing but what they said, “If you are of the truthful ones, then bring upon us the chastisement of Allāh.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:30

Lūṭ prayed, “My Lord! Help me against the evil people.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:31

And when Our messengers (i.e., the three angels) came to Ibrāhīm with the good news of the birth of a son through his wife Sarah, and they also said, “We surely are going to destroy the inhabitants of this town (i.e., Lūṭ’s people) because its inhabitants are unjust.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

In response to his prayer, Allāh sent three angels (in the form of young men) to invoke chastisement upon the people of Lūṭ. These angels first visited Ibrāhīm.

29:32

Ibrāhīm, out of his concern for Lūṭ, says, “But in it is Lūṭ also!” They replied, “We very well know who is in it; we are certainly going to deliver him and his family except his wife—she shall be among those who remain behind.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:33

So when Our messengers in the form of young men came to Lūṭ, he was distressed for them and he felt helpless to protect them from the evil people. Sensing his helplessness concerning them, the angels said, “Neither fear nor grieve on our account; we surely will deliver you and your family, except your wife—she shall be among those who remain behind.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:34

Surely We will cause an abomination (in the form of baked stones) from heaven to pour down upon the people of this town because they were transgressing God’s commandments.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:35

We certainly have left a clear sign of it for people who understand.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(4) The People of Shu‘ayb

29:36

And remember when We sent to the people of Madyan their brother Shu‘ayb. He said, “O my people! Serve Allāh, hope for the Last Day, and do not act as evil-doers on the earth.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:37

But they rejected him, so a severe earthquake overtook them, and they became motionless bodies in their homes.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(5 & 6) The People of ‘Ād and Thamūd

29:38

Similarly, We destroyed the ‘Ād and Thamūd—and their destruction is apparent to you from the ruins of their homes. You should reflect that it was Shayṭān that had made their evil deeds seem fair and acceptable to them, and thus he prevented them from the right path even though they had been endowed with the insight of the truth.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

(7) The People of Mūsa

29:39

And We similarly destroyed Qārūn, Fir‘awn, and Hāmān. M ū sa certainly came to them with clear arguments, but they acted arrogantly on the earth—yet they were not the victors.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Conclusion

29:40

Each one of the groups mentioned above, We punished for its sins in different ways: (1) among them were those upon whom We sent a violent storm; (2) among them were those whom the rumbling of the earthquake seized; (3) among them were those whom We caused to be swallowed up by the earth; and (4) among them were those whom We drowned. Allāh did not want to be unjust to them, but they were unjust to themselves by transgressing OurS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:41

The parable of those who had taken guardians other than Allāh is the parable of the spider that makes the cobweb as its house: surely the weakest of the houses is the spider’s house; if they had known.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:42

Allāh knows whatever thing they call upon besides Him, and He is the Mighty, the Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:43

These are the examples that We set forth for the people—but none understands except those who are learned.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:44

Allāh has created the heavens and the earth with the truth; surely in that is a sign for the believers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:45

Recite to the people what has been revealed to you from the Book (the Qur’ān) so that they stay away from polytheism and establish the ritual prayer for surely the ritual prayer keeps away the worshippers from indecent and evil deeds. Certainly, the consciousness of Allāh is the greatest effect of the ritual prayer. And Allāh knows what you do.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Conveying Islam to Others

29:46

O Muslims! Do not debate with the People of the Book except with the best way of propagation. (However, there is no need to be cordial and polite with those of them who act unjustly towards you since they might mistake your politeness as a sign of weakness.) Then Allāh gives an example of how to start the dialogue by talking about the common belief of all revealed religions: And say We believe in that Divine message which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and that our God and your God is One, and to Him do we submit.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:47

This is the basis on which We have revealed the Book to you, O Muḥammad, and so the People of the Book are already conditioned to believe in it. And from among them there actually are those who believe in it—and none deny Our verses except the unbelievers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Qur’ān is the Word of God

29:48

O Muḥammad, you have lived among the people of Mecca for a long time, and they know that no one has taught you and that you did not read before the Qur’ān any revealed book, nor did you write one with your right hand—had it been otherwise, the skeptics would doubt the authenticity of the revelation and accuse you of forging from previous books!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:49

Nay, these are clear verses in the hearts of those who have been blessed with knowledge— and none deny Our verses except the unfair ones who reject the Divine message.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:50

Those who did not accept the Prophet Muḥammad, said, “Why are not signs other than the Qur’ān being sent down upon him from his Lord? Maybe, then we will believe in him.” O Muḥammad, say, “The signs are with Allāh only and at His sole discretion; it is not for me or you to demand for a sign. And as for me, I am just a plain warner to you of Allāh’s message.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:51

Is it not sufficient for them that We have revealed to you the Book which is being recited to them? Surely in this Book is the mercy and the reminder for the people who believe.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:52

O Muḥammad, say to them: “Allāh is a sufficient witness between me and you on this dispute for He knows what is in the heavens and the earth. As for those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allāh, these are the real losers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:53

They ask you to hasten the chastisement that you have threatened for the unbelievers— they do not realize that had it not been for the Divine determined term of life, the chastisement would certainly have come upon them! And that chastisement will surely come to them suddenly while they will not even realize it.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:54

What? They ask you to hasten the chastisement? Verily the hell-fire will encompass the unbelieversS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:55

on the day when the chastisement shall engulf them from above them and from beneath their feet. At that moment, Allāh shall say, “Taste what you were doing in the world.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Consoling the Oppressed Believers

29:56

O My servants who believe! Do not be disheartened by the oppression of the unbelievers. Verily My earth is vast so that you may migrate to other lands. In all cases, only Me should you worship.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:57

Eventually, every soul must taste of death, and then to Us, you shall be returned.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:58

After returning to Me, those who believe and do good deeds, We will settle them permanently in the Garden in dwellings beneath which rivers flow—this is the good reward of the good-doersS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:59

who exercised patience in the face of calamities and upholding their religion, and put their trust in their Lord.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:60

If you are forced to migrate for the sake of your religion, then do not worry regarding your sustenance: there are many living creatures who do not carry and store their own sustenance; Allāh sustains them as well as you, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing and answers their prayers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:61

O Muḥammad, if you ask them (the idol- worshippers): “Who created the heavens and the earth, and who made the sun and the moon subservient?” they will surely say, “Allāh.” Whence are they turned away?!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:62

By creating the heavens and the earth and alternating the sun and the moon, Allāh has created an environment that can produce sustenance for living creatures on the earth. Allāh abundantly provides the subsistence for whom He pleases from His servants and restricts them—surely Allāh is Well-Aware of all things.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:63

And if you ask them (the idol-worshippers): “Who sends down the water from the clouds, and thereby revives the earth with it after its ‘death’?” they will surely say, “Allah.” So O Muḥammad, say, “All praise is due to Allāh for clarifying the truth so that the unbelievers do not have any justification for worshipping idols. But, unfortunately, most of them do not understand.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:64

This worldly life is nothing but a play and a diversion from reality, whereas the last and eternal abode, is the real life—only if they had known?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:65

The unbelievers acknowledge My existence when they come face to face with a life-threatening situation: When they board the ships and travel in the sea and then they are faced with drowning, they earnestly pray to Allāh for help and express their sincere devotion to Him; but when He brings them safely to the land, lo! they associate others in their worship,S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:66

and they become ungrateful for what We have given them. Let them enjoy what I have given them, for soon they shall know the outcome of their ungratefulness.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:67

Do not they see that We have made Mecca a secure sanctuary while men are abducted from areas around them? Would they still believe in the falsehood and be ungrateful to the blessings of Allāh?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:68

Who can be more unjust than a person who forges a lie against Allāh by ascribing partners for Him or rejects the truth (i.e., the Qur’ān) when it comes to him? Will not the eventual abode of the unbelievers be in hell?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

29:69

As far as those who strive hard for Us, We will most surely guide them towards Our ways; and Allāh is most surely with those who the good-doers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
