The Contents of the Revelation: He has prescribed plainly to you the religion that He had enjoined upon Nūḥ –and that which We have revealed to you, O Muḥammad– and that which We enjoined upon Ibrāhīm, Mūsā and ‘Īsa. All these systems of law (sharī‘a) come from the same God, and all communities have been told to maintain the religion in their practices and not to be divided therein. It is unbearable to the polytheists to accept the religion to which you call them. However, Allāh chooses for it whomsoever He pleases and guides towards it whoever turns to Him in repentance.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
He has prescribed for you the religion which He had enjoined upon Noah and which We have [also] revealed to you, and which We had enjoined upon Abraham, Moses and Jesus, declaring, ‘Maintain the religion, and do not be divided in it.’ Hard on the polytheists is that to which you summon them. He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah and that which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], and what We enjoined upon Abraham and Moses and Jesus - to establish the religion and not be divided therein. The people did not divide among themselves except after the knowledge had come to them; their division was not because of ignorance, it was out of envy among themselves. Had not a word preceded from your Lord about deferring their punishment to a determined term (i.e., the day of judgement), certainly, judgement would have been passed immediately between them. Moreover, those of their descendants who were made to inherit the Book after them are surely in serious doubt concerning it because of the division created by the earlier generations.S. M.
