They, the Meccans, are surprised that a warner has come to them from themselves, a human being like them, and therefore the unbelievers rejected him and said, “He is a sorcerer and a liar.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
They consider it odd that there should come to them a warner from among themselves, and the faithless say, ‘This is a magician, a mendacious liar.’Ali Quli Qarai
And they wonder that there has come to them a warner [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] from among themselves. And the disbelievers say, "This is a magician and a liar.Saheeh International
Upon hearing this response, the aristocrats among them dashed out of the meeting and saidto their people: “Go and stand by your gods—this is most surely a desirable thing to do.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Meccans met Abū Ṭālib, the Prophet’s uncle, and complained about his nephew, who condemns their idols and talks about worshipping One God only. They even proposed to Abū Ṭālib that they were willing to give his nephew a large sum of money and make him the king of Mecca if he stopped promoting his new religion.
When Abū Ṭālib conveyed the Meccans’ message to the Prophet, he replied: “Even if they place the sun on my right hand and the moon on my left hand, I will not abandon my mission of promoting tawḥīd, monotheism.”

Remember when they came to Dāwūd, he was startled because of them appearing suddenly, and so they said, “Don’t be startled; we are two petitioners, one of us has been unfair to the other; therefore judge between us fairly and don’t exceed the due bounds and guide us to the right path.” Then the plaintiff presented his case:S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
When they entered into the presence of David, he was alarmed by them. They said, ‘Do not be afraid. [We are only] two contenders: one of us has bullied the other. So judge justly between us, and do not exceed [the bounds of justice], and show us the right path.’Ali Quli Qarai

Dāwūd replied, “Verily, he has been unjust to you in asking for your ewe to be added to his ewes. Indeed, many of the partners are surely unfair towards one another except those who believe and do good deeds—and alas, they are very few.” Even though Dāwūd’s judgement was right but he had pronounced his decision without listening to the respondent. And Dāwūd soon realized that We had tried him by this hypothetical question and so he sought the forgiveness of his Lord, fell down in prostration, and turned to Him in repentance.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
He said, ‘He has certainly wronged you by asking your ewe in addition to his own ewes, and indeed many partners bully one another, except such as have faith and do righteous deeds, and few are they.’ Then David knew that We had tested him, whereat he pleaded with his Lord for forgiveness, and fell down in prostration and repented.Ali Quli Qarai
[David] said, "He has certainly wronged you in demanding your ewe [in addition] to his ewes. And indeed, many associates oppress one another, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds - and few are they." And David became certain that We had tried him, and he asked forgiveness of his Lord and fell down bowing [in prostration] and turned in repentance [to Allāh].Saheeh International
According to the Sunnī and Shī‘a traditions, the two petitioners were actually angels in human form, and they had been sent to Dāwūd to test him. So the case presented by the plaintiff and the judgement given by Dāwūd was just a hypothetical example and not a real case, and so there is no question of sin in the actual sense. It was more in line with the ‘ḥasanātu ’l-abrār, sayyi‘ātu ’l-muqarribīn – virtuous deeds of good people are sins for those who are closest to the Almighty.’
Then We said to him: “O Dāwūd! We have indeed made you Our vicegerent on the earth; therefore judge between the people with justice and don’t follow the vain desire since it will lead you astray from Allāh’s path. Verily those who are deviated from Allāh’s path, for them shall be a severe punishment for forgetting the day of reckoning.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
‘O David! Indeed, We have made you a vicegerent on the earth. So judge between people with justice, and do not follow your desires, or they will lead you astray from the way of Allah. Indeed there is a severe punishment for those who stray from the way of Allah, because of their forgetting the Day of Reckoning.’Ali Quli Qarai
[We said], "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth, so judge between the people in truth and do not follow [your own] desire, as it will lead you astray from the way of Allāh." So he said to his angels: “Bring the sun back to me.” Then he and his people began to pat the legs and necks of the horses and then said their prayer.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
‘Bring it back for me!’ Then he [and others] began to wipe [their] legs and necks.Ali Quli Qarai
[He said], "Return them to me," and set about striking [their] legs and necks.Saheeh International
According to the interpretation of the Imāms of Ahlul Bayt, the word “ṭafiqa masḥan—began to wipe or pat” has been used in the literal sense in the meaning of wiping one’s hand on something. Various translations that imply that it means the killing of the horses do not fit the status of a prophet like Sulaymān! Why kill the horses?

While Ayyūb was ill, his wife was approached by Satan, who told her that he had the cure for her husband, but she has to acknowledge that the cure was only because of him. In other words, she was asked to deny the role of God in the healing of the sick. In desperation to end the suffering of her husband, she agreed. When Ayyūb found this out, he became very upset and swore in God’s name to whip her.
