O you who believe! Fulfill the obligations that you have with Allāh or with one another. Permitted to you are the cattle quadrupeds, except for the ones which are described to you below (in verse 5:3). But this law does not permit you to hunt while you are in the state of iḥrām (i.e., pilgrim’s dress)—verily Allāh orders what He desires.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Keep your agreements. You are permitted animals of grazing livestock, except what is [now] announced to you, disallowing game while you are in pilgrim sanctity. Indeed Allah decrees whatever He desires.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts. Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you [in this Qur’ān] - hunting not being permitted while you are in the state of iḥrām. Indeed, Allāh ordains what He intends.Saheeh International

O you who believe! Do not violate Allāh’s signs nor the sacred month, neither interfere with the pilgrims’ unmarked offerings or those marked with garlands, nor those going to the Sacred House (i.e., Ka‘bah) seeking the grace and pleasure of their Lord. And when you are free from the pilgrim’sgarb, then you may hunt; and let not hatred of a people —because they hindered you from the Sacred Mosque— incite you to exceed the limits.Always remember to help one another in righteousness and piety, and do not help one another in sin and aggression; and guard yourselves against displeasing Allāh; surely Allāh is severe in punishing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not violate Allah’s sacraments, neither the sacred month, nor the offering, nor the necklaces, nor those bound for the Sacred House, who seek their Lord’s grace and [His] pleasure. But when you emerge from pilgrim sanctity, you may hunt for game. Ill feeling for a people should not lead you, because they barred you from [access to] the Sacred Mosque, to transgress. Cooperate in piety and Godwariness, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression, and be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah is severe in retribution.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not violate the rites of Allāh or [the sanctity of] the sacred month or [neglect the marking of] the sacrificial animals and garlanding [them] or [violate the safety of] those coming to the Sacred House seeking bounty from their Lord and [His] approval. But when you come out of iḥrām, then [you may] hunt. And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām lead you to transgress. And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.Saheeh International
Forbidden to you is the animal which dies of itself, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and the animal on which a name other than that of Allāh has been invoked while slaughtering, and the strangled animal, and the animal that was beaten to death, and the animal killed by a fall, and the animal killed by being smitten with the horn, and the animal which wild beasts have eaten, unless it is an animal which you have already slaughtered, and the animal which is sacrificed on stones set up for idols, and the animal which you divide by drawing lots from the arrows of the game: all that is an act of sinning. Today those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion, so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, I have completed My blessing of guidance upon you, and I have approved Islam as a religion for you. But whosoever is compelled by hunger toto eat the forbidden things mentioned above without inclining to sin, then he should know that Allāh surely is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
You are prohibited carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been offered to other than Allah, and the animal strangled or beaten to death, and that which dies by falling or is gored to death, and that which is mangled by a beast of prey—barring that which you may purify —and what is sacrificed on stone altars [to idols], and that you should divide by raffling with arrows. All that is transgression. Today the faithless have despaired of your religion. So do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, and I have completed My blessing upon you, and I have approved Islam as your religion. But should anyone be compelled by hunger, without inclining to sin, then Allah is indeed all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
Prohibited to you are dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allāh, and [those animals] killed by strangling or by a violent blow or by a head-long fall or by the goring of horns, and those from which a wild animal has eaten, except what you [are able to] slaughter [before its death], and those which are sacrificed on stone altars, and [prohibited is] that you seek decision through divining arrows. That is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of [defeating] your religion; so fear them not, but fear Me. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islām as religion. But whoever is forced by severe hunger with no inclination to sin - then indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International
After the Prophet had appointed ‘Ali bin Abi Ṭālib as the “mawla” of the Muslims in Ghadīr Khumm (the details of which will come later), the following verse was revealed:
O Muḥammad! They ask you about what is lawful to them. Say, “The good things are lawful to you. And as far as the hunting creatures areconcerned whom you teach and train as hounds —teaching them what Allāh has taught you— eat of what they catch for you and mention Allāh’s name over it. Guard yourselves againstdispleasing Allāh; Allāh is quick in reckoning.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
They ask you as to what is lawful to them. Say, ‘All the good things are lawful to you.’ As for what you have taught hunting dogs [to catch], teaching them out of what Allah has taught you, eat of what they catch for you and mention Allah’s Name over it, and be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah is swift at reckoning.Ali Quli Qarai
They ask you, [O Muḥammad], what has been made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are [all] good foods and [game caught by] what you have trained of hunting animals which you train as Allāh has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allāh upon it, and fear Allāh." Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.Saheeh International
Today, all the good things have been made lawful to you. And the food of the people who have been given the Book is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Likewise, the chaste believing woman and the chaste woman from among those who were given the Book before you are also lawful foryou. These women are lawful for you only when you have given them their dowries in marriage, not openly fornicating nor taking secret lovers. Of course, social interaction should not reach to a point where others influence Muslims. And remember that whosoever denounces the faith, his deeds will be forfeited, and in the hereafter, he shall be among the losers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Today all the good things have been made lawful to you—the food of those who were given the Book is lawful to you, and your food is lawful to them—and the chaste ones from among faithful women, and chaste women of those who were given the Book before you, when you have given them their dowries, in wedlock, not in license, nor taking paramours. Should anyone renounce his faith, his work shall fail and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter.Ali Quli Qarai
This day [all] good foods have been made lawful, and the food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them. And [lawful in marriage are] chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, when you have given them their due compensation, desiring chastity, not unlawful sexual intercourse or taking [secret] lovers. And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.Saheeh International
By looking at the verses about forbidden food, some Muslims thought that any kind of social interaction with the Ahlul Kitab should be avoided. In order to avert that misunderstanding, Allāh says:
The Arabic word translated above as “food” is “ṭa‘ām.” Although ṭa‘ām is used for “food” in general, in the verse above, it means “grains” because of the following reasons: In the usage of the people of Hijāz (i.e., Mecca, Medina and Ṭā’if), it was mainly used for “wheat.” See the famous Arabic dictionaries like Manzūr al-Miṣri, Lisānu ’l-‘Arab, Ibn Athīr, and an-Nihāyah; also see Tāju ’l-'Arūs and aṭ-Ṭurayhi’s Majma‘u ’l-Baḥrayn. Also, see Lane’s Lexicon under “ṭa‘ām.” Whenever the word “ṭa‘ām” has been used as a noun and without any genitive construction (iḍāfat) in the Qur’ān, it usually means only “wheat.” See the commentaries of most Muslim scholars on verses 2:184, 5:95 and 76:8. Rashīd Riḍā, in his Tafsīr al-Manār, has missed the condition of “without any genitive construction and without any context in understanding the term ṭa‘ām.” See the rebuttal of his arguments by aṭ-Ṭabāṭabā’ī, al-Mizān, vol. 5 (Arabic) p. 227-231. The Imāms of Ahlul Bayt have also said that the word ṭa‘ām in this verse means “wheat and other grains.” See the narrations in al-Mizān under 5:5.

Wuḍū’, the minor ablution: O you who believe! When you get ready to stand up for the ritual prayer, (1) wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and (2) wipe a part of your heads and your feet up to the ankles. Ghusl, the major ablution: If you are defiled by discharge of semen orby sexual intercourse, then purify yourselves by performing the major ablution (i.e., a shower).Tayammum, the symbolic ablution: But if you are sick, or on a journey, or if any of you comes from the toilet, or if you have ‘touched’ women (i.e., had sexual relations withthem), and in all these four circumstances, you cannot find water to perform the ablution, then perform tayammum on the pure earth: strikeyour palms upon the ground and then wipe a part of your faces and your hands with it. Allāh does not desire to impose any difficulty upon you; but He desires to purify you, and that He may complete His blessing upon you; haply you may thank Him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! When you stand up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe a part of your heads and your feet, up to the ankles. If you are junub, purify yourselves. But if you are sick, or on a journey, or any of you has come from the toilet, or you have touched women, and you cannot find water, then make tayammum with clean ground and wipe a part of your faces and your hands with it. Allah does not desire to put you to hardship, but He desires to purify you, and to complete His blessing upon you so that you may give thanks.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allāh does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.Saheeh International

Allāh made a covenant with the Children of Israel, and We raised from among them twelve chieftains. Then Allāh said to them, “I am with you. So, if you perform the prayer, pay the alms, believe in My messengers and support them, and lend to Allāh a good loan by lending moneyto His servants without any interest—then I will surely grant remission to you of your evil deeds, and I will certainly admit you to the gardens underneath which rivers flow. But whoever of you after that disbelieves, surely he has gone astray from the right way.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Certainly Allah took a pledge from the Children of Israel, and We raised among them twelve chiefs. And Allah said, ‘I am with you! Surely, if you maintain the prayer and give the zakat and have faith in My apostles and support them and lend Allah a good loan, I will surely absolve you of your misdeeds, and I will surely admit you into gardens with streams running in them. But whoever of you disbelieves after that has certainly strayed from the right way.’Ali Quli Qarai
And Allāh had already taken a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We delegated from among them twelve leaders. And Allāh said, "I am with you. If you establish prayer and give zakāh and believe in My messengers and support them and loan Allāh a goodly loan, I will surely remove from you your misdeeds and admit you to gardens beneath which rivers flow. But whoever of you disbelieves after that has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way."Saheeh International
Then because of their breaking of their covenant, We cursed them and made their hearts hard (i.e., impenitent). They perverted the words from their meaning, and they forgot a part of theorder that they were reminded of. O Muḥammad! You shall always discover treachery on their part, except a few of them. For the time being, pardon them and turn away from them. Allāh surely loves the good-doers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Then, because of their breaking their covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard: they pervert words from their meanings, and have forgotten a part of what they were reminded. You will not cease to learn of some of their treachery, excepting a few of them. Yet excuse them and forbear. Indeed Allah loves the virtuous.Ali Quli Qarai
So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hardened. They distort words from their [proper] places [i.e., usages] and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded. And you will still observe deceit among them, except a few of them. But pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allāh loves the doers of good.Saheeh International
As for those people of the Book who say, “We are Christians,” We made a covenant with them; but like the Jews, they also forgot a part of the order that they were reminded of. When both the brothers offered a sacrifice for Allāh, it was accepted from one of them (Hābīl) and not accepted from the other (Qābīl). The reason for the acceptance of Hābīl’s sacrifice and the rejection of Qābīl’s sacrifice was that the former had offered the best of the things that he possessed with sincerity, while the latter had offered the least valuable of the things that he possessed without any pure intention. The rejection of Qābīl’s offering and the acceptance of that of his brother created a feeling of jealousy in Qābīl’s heart. After the killing, Qābīl did not know what to do with his brother’s body. Then two ravens appeared by the command of Allāh and started to fight until one killed the other. Then Allāh sent the raven, and it started digging up the earth and covered the other ravenwith it—this was done so that the raven may show Qābīl how he should cover the dead body of his brother. Therefore, to show the sacredness of humanlife, We prescribed to the Children of Israel that whoever kills a person (not in retaliation for a soul slain nor for corruption in the land), it shall be as if he had slain humanity altogether. On theother hand, whoever gives life to a person (i.e.,saves his life), it shall be as if he had given life to humanity altogether. Our messengers have already come to them (the Israelites) with clear signs, but even after that, many of them exceed the limits in the earth.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
That is why We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul, without [its being guilty of] manslaughter or corruption on the earth, is as though he had killed all mankind, and whoever saves a life is as though he had saved all mankind. Our apostles certainly brought them manifest signs, yet even after that, many of them commit excesses on the earth.Ali Quli Qarai
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And Our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.Saheeh International

O My Messenger! Let not those who compete to further fall into unbelief grieve you. They are of different kinds: (1) From those who say with their mouths, “We believe,” but their hearts do not believe—i.e., the hypocrites. (2) And from among the Jews who listen to you for ascribing lies to you—they listen on behalf of other people who have not come to you outof pride. Those “other people” pervert the words of Allāh from their meanings and say to theirfollowers who come to you: “If you are given this (i.e., a judgement which is from the Tawrāt), then take it; but if you are not given this (i.e., ajudgement not from the Tawrāt), then beware!” O Muḥammad, don’t grieve for such people! A person whom Allāh wants to try in this worldand then abandons him, you don’t have anything for him to protect him from Allāh. These are the people whose hearts Allāh does not desire to purify from sins; for them is disgrace in this world and in the hereafter, they will have a grievous chastisement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O Apostle! Do not grieve for those who are active in [promoting] unfaith, such as those who say, ‘We believe’ with their mouths, but whose hearts have no faith, and the Jews who eavesdrop with the aim of [telling] lies [against you] and eavesdrop for other people who do not come to you. They pervert words from their meanings, [and] say, ‘If you are given this, take it, but if you are not given this, beware!’ Yet whomever Allah wishes to mislead, you cannot avail him anything against Allah. They are the ones whose hearts Allah did not desire to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and there is a great punishment for them in the Hereafter.Ali Quli Qarai
O Messenger, let them not grieve you who hasten into disbelief – of those who say, "We believe" with their mouths, but their hearts believe not, and from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] places [i.e., usages], saying, "If you are given this, take it; but if you are not given it, then beware." But he for whom Allāh intends fitnah - never will you possess [power to do] for him a thing against Allāh. Those are the ones for whom Allāh does not intend to purify their hearts. For them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment.Saheeh International
These Jews are the listeners of falsehood and consumers of unlawful wealth. If they come to you asking for judgement, judge between them or turn away from them. Eavesdroppers with the aim of [telling] lies, eaters of the unlawful—if they come to you, judge between them, or disregard them. If you disregard them, they will not harm you in any way. But if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed Allah loves the just.Ali Quli Qarai
[They are] avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of [what is] unlawful. So if they come to you, [O Muḥammad], judge between them or turn away from them. And if you turn away from them - never will they harm you at all. And if you judge, judge between them with justice. Indeed, Allāh loves those who act justly.Saheeh International
But how shall they make you their judge while they are the same people who have the Tawrāt among them in which is Allāh’s judgement yet they turn their backs to it?! They are not believers at all.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Surely We revealed the Tawrāt, wherein is guidance and light. By this Book, the prophets (who had submitted themselves to Allāh) gave judgement for the Jews, as did the masters and the rabbis by that portion of Allāh’s Book which that were required to guard, and they also were witnesses thereof. So, do not fear the people, but fear Me; and do not sell My revelations at a low price. Whoever does not judge according to what Allāh has revealed, they are the unbelievers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
We sent down the Torah containing guidance and light. The prophets, who had submitted, judged by it for the Jews, and so did the rabbis and the scribes, as they were charged to preserve the Book of Allah and were witnesses to it. So do not fear the people, but fear Me, and do not sell My signs for a paltry gain. Those who do not judge by what Allah has sent down—it is they who are the faithless.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, We sent down the Torah, in which was guidance and light. The prophets who submitted [to Allāh] judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars by that with which they were entrusted of the Scripture of Allāh, and they were witnesses thereto. So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price [i.e., worldly gain]. And whoever does not judge by what Allāh has revealed - then it is those who are the disbelievers.Saheeh International
We prescribed for them in it (i.e., theTawrat): “A life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and there is a retaliation for wounds.” But, O believers, before you demand your right of retaliation, remember that whoever forgoes his right of retaliation as a freewill offering, it shall be an expiation for him for his own sins. Whoever does not judge according to what Allāh has revealed, they are the unjust ones.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Then We revealed to you, O Muḥammad, the Book (the Qur’ān) with the truth as a confirmer of the Book that was before it and as its guardian – the Qur’ān preserves the original message of God given in the previous scriptures that have gone through alternations. So, O Muḥammad, judge between them (i.e.,the Jews) according to what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their evil inclinations against the truth that has come to you. We have appointed an appropriate system of law and a way of life for each of you, O religiouscommunities. If Allāh had willed, He would have made you all a single community, but He madeyou into various religious communities so that He may test you in the laws that He has given to you—so compete with one another in hastening to good deeds. Always remember that to Allāh shall be the eventual return of all of you, and then He will inform you of the matter in which you differed with each other.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, confirming what was before it of the Book and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their desires against the truth that has come to you. For each [community] among you We had appointed a code [of law] and a path, and had Allah wished He would have made you one community, but [His purposes required] that He should test you in respect to what He has given you. So take the lead in all good works. To Allah shall be the return of you all, whereat He will inform you concerning that about which you used to differ.Ali Quli Qarai
And We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth. To each of you We prescribed a law and a method. Had Allāh willed, He would have made you one nation [united in religion], but [He intended] to test you in what He has given you; so race to [all that is] good. To Allāh is your return all together, and He will [then] inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.Saheeh International
And so, O Muḥammad, you should judge between them (the Jews) according to what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their evil inclinations and be cautious of them lest they tempt you away from some of the laws that Allāh has revealed to you. But if they turn their backs on your judgement, then know that Allāh desires to afflict them for some of their sins; surely many people among them are sinners.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

But if they turn their backs [on you], then know that Allah desires to punish them for some of their sins, and indeed many of the people are transgressors.Ali Quli Qarai
And judge, [O Muḥammad], between them by what Allāh has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allāh has revealed to you. The Jews say, “The hand of Allāh is tied up (i.e., He is miserly)!” Their hands are tied, and they are cursed for what they have said! What message was the Prophet ordered to deliver in this verse? There is a great difference among Muslims. The Shī‘as believe this verse was revealed at Ghadīr Khumm when the Prophet was returning from the last pilgrimage. Based on this verse, the Prophet declared that ‘Ali bin Abī Ṭālib is his successor and “the master of the Muslims as he himself was their master.” This is attested by many Sunni scholars of history and ḥadīth. For a detailed discussion on this subject in English, see S. Saeed Akhtar Rizvi’s Imāmat—the Vicegerency of the Prophet, revised edition, (Tehran: WOFIS, 1985), Chap. 10.

When the unbelievers of Mecca started to persecute, torture and kill the Muslims, the Prophet ordered some Muslims to migrate to Abyssinia and seek refuge with the Christian king of that country. Soon a group of Muslims under the leadership of Ja‘far bin Abi Ṭālib left Mecca. The Qurayshite unbelievers were not pleased to learn this news; they feared that the Muslims might build a strong base in a foreign land —out of their reach— to spread their new faith. So, they decided to send a delegation of two men to the Negus (i.e. the King) of Abyssinia with a request to return the “outlaws and rebels” who had run away from Mecca. When the Qurayshi delegation presented their case to the Abyssinian King, he refused to hand them over without hearing their side of the story. Ja‘far and his friends were called to the court, and the King asked their opinion about the allegation aimed against them. Ja‘far very lucidly replied: O King! We were in a state of ignorance and immorality, worshipping idols, eating dead animals, and committing all sorts of iniquities. We honoured no relative and assisted no neighbour. The strong among us exploited the weak. Then God sent us a prophet, one of our own people, whose lineage, truthfulness, loyalty and purity were well known to us. He called us to worship God alone and repudiate all the stones and idols that our ancestors and we used to worship. He commanded us always to tell the truth, to be good neighbours, to abstain from blood and forbidden things, and to avoid fornication, perjury, and false witness. He commanded us not to rob the wealth of the orphan or to accuse the married woman. He ordered us to worship God alone and never to associate any other being with Him, to observe prayers, to fast and to pay the alms. We believed in him in what he enjoined and forbade. Our people, however, tried to sway us away from our religion, persecuted us and inflicted upon us great suffering that we might re-enter the immoral practices of old. As they suppressed and berated us unjustly and made life intolerable for us in Mecca, we chose you and your country and came here to live under your protection in justice and peace. The Negus was so much impressed by this brief outline of Islam that he asked, “Will you show me some of the revelations which the Prophet claims to have come to him from God?” Ja‘far answered, “Yes!” and recited to the Negus verses 1-30 of Chapter 19. When the patriarchs heard these verses about ‘Īsā and Maryam, they said, “These words must have sprung from the same fountainhead from which the words of our master Jesus have sprung.” The Negus said, “What you have just recited and that which was revealed to Moses must have both issued from the same source. Go forth into my kingdom; I shall not extradite you at all.” On the following day, the Qurayshite delegation returned to the Negus and said, “There is another side to the Muslims’ new religion in which they judge Jesus in condemnable terms.” The Negus sent after the Muslims and asked them to tell him more about Jesus. The same Ja‘far bin Abi Ṭālib answered, “Our judgement of Jesus is exactly the same as that which was revealed to our Prophet; namely, that Jesus is the servant of God, His Prophet, His spirit, His command given unto Maryam, the virgin.” Hearing this, the Negus drew a line on the floor with his cane and said with great joy, “Between your religion and ours, there is really no more difference than this line.” Realizing they had no more cards to play, the Qurayshite delegation returned to Mecca with much disappointment and anger. According to the traditions, the following five verses were revealed about the Christians of Abyssinia who gave refuge to the Muslim immigrants:

Allāh will not call you to account for your oaths that are of no consequence in His eyes, but He will call you to account for the oaths which are consequential in His eyes. The expiation for breaking an oath (whether non-consequentialor consequential) is to feed ten poor persons with the average of the food you serve to your families, or to clothe them, or to set free a slave. If one does not find the means to pay the expiation, then he should fast for three days. This is the expiation for your oaths when you have sworn but cannot fulfill it. Guard your oaths. In this way, Allah makes His signs clear for you; hopefully, you may thank Him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Allah shall not take you to task for what is frivolous in your oaths; but He shall take you to task for what you pledge in earnest. The atonement for it is to feed ten needy persons with the average food you give to your families, or their clothing, or the freeing of a slave. He who cannot afford [any of these] shall fast for three days. That is the atonement for your oaths when you vow. But keep your oaths. Thus does Allah clarify His signs for you so that you may give thanks.Ali Quli Qarai
Allāh will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses [i.e., revealed law] that you may be grateful.Saheeh International
The traditions say that ‘Ali bin Abi Ṭālib had taken an oath that he would stay awake most of the night to worship Allāh, Bilāl had taken an oath that he would fast every day, and ‘Uthmān bin Maṭ‘ūm had taken an oath that he would forsake intimate relations with his wife for worshipping Allāh. Although these people had taken the oaths intending to depart from worldly pleasures and devote themselves to the worship of Allāh, Allāh Himself did not wish that His beloved servants should go to such an extent for the sake of pleasing Him; and therefore, the above verse was revealed to the Prophet. However, since they had taken an oath to abstain from lawful things voluntarily, the following verse explains what they should do to release themselves from the oath:
There are numerous traditions on this issue in commentaries such as aṭ-Ṭabrasi, Majma‘u ’l-Bayān and as-Suyūṭi, ad-Durr al-Manthūr under this verse. This act of voluntarily depriving oneself of lawful pleasures of this life is like the act of the Prophet himself, as seen in 66:1, 20:1-2. So, it was not a sin; however, Almighty Allāh, out of His grace, didn’t want His devoted servants to go to that level of self-deprivation.

“Azlām” was a method of gambling with arrows played by ten persons. A camel was purchased, slaughtered and divided into 24 parts. There were ten arrows: each with a separate name and its specified share. Anyone on whose name one of the first seven arrows was drawn, took the number of the shares allotted to it; those on whose name the last three arrows were drawn got nothing and had to pay the price of the camel. As for those who believed and did good deeds, there is no blame on them for what they ate ordrank if they feared displeasing Allāh, believed in Him and performed good deeds; then feared displeasing Allāh and believed; and then feared displeasing Allāh and did good. Allāh loves those who do good to others. Allāh has repeated the words “imān (believe),” “‘amal ṣāliḥ/iḥsān (good deeds),” and “taqwa (Godfearing)” three times each to show that nothing matters in His view except true faith combined with good deeds augmented with piety. It is also an indication of the various levels of belief, good deeds and piety.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
There will be no sin upon those who have faith and do righteous deeds in regard to what they have eaten [in the past] so long as they are Godwary and faithful and do righteous deeds, and are further Godwary and faithful, and are further Godwary and virtuous. And Allah loves the virtuous.Ali Quli Qarai
There is not upon those who believe and do righteousness [any] blame concerning what they have eaten [in the past] if they [now] fear Allāh and believe and do righteous deeds, and then fear Allāh and believe, and then fear Allāh and do good; and Allāh loves the doers of good.Saheeh International
When the prohibition of intoxicants was imposed on the Muslims, many people came to the Prophet and said, “What will happen to those of our dead companions who used to drink intoxicants?” The answer came that:

O you who believe! Allāh will certainly try you with something of the game that your hands and your lances can easily attain so that Allāh may know who fears displeasing Him in regarding the presently unseen punishment ofthe hereafter. Whoever, thereafter, exceeds thelimits of the sharī‘ah for him shall be a painful punishment.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Allah will surely test you with some of the game within the reach of your hands and spears, so that Allah may know those who fear Him in secret. So whoever transgresses after that, there is a painful punishment for him.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, Allāh will surely test you through something of the game that your hands and spears [can] reach, that Allāh may make evident those who fear Him unseen. And whoever transgresses after that - for him is a painful punishment.Saheeh International
O you who believe! Do not kill the game while you are in the state of iḥrām. Whoever of you kills the game willfully, then there shall be the following expiation: he must sacrifice the like of what he has killed from the cattle (as shall be judged and selected by two just persons among you) as an offering. And this offering must reach (i.e., be sacrificed) near the Ka‘bah; or if he cannot offer the sacrifice, then he maypay the expiation in the form of food for the poor; or if he cannot even pay the expiation, then hemay fast for the number of days which are equivalent to it—so that he may taste the consequence of his action. Allāh has pardoned the past sins, but whoever returns to disobedience, then Allāh will take vengeance from him; Allāh is Mighty, Lord of Retribution.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not kill any game when you are in pilgrim sanctity. Should any of you kill it intentionally, its atonement, the counterpart from cattle of what he has killed, as judged by two fair men among you, will be an offering brought to the Ka‘bah, or an atonement by feeding needy persons, or its equivalent in fasting, that he may taste the untoward consequences of his conduct. Allah has excused what is already past; but should anyone resume, Allah shall take vengeance on him, for Allah is all-mighty, avenger.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of iḥrām. And whoever of you kills it intentionally - the penalty is an equivalent from sacrificial animals to what he killed, as judged by two just men among you as an offering [to Allāh] delivered to the Kaʿbah, or an expiation: the feeding of needy people or the equivalent of that in fasting, that he may taste the consequence of his matter [i.e., deed]. During the pre-lslamic era, the Arabs had special respect for the following types of camels and goats: Baḥīrah: a she-camel who had given birth to five camels. The Arabs used to split her ears, refrain from riding on her back or slaughtering her, and they would not prevent her from water or grass. Sā’ibah: Sometimes, a person used to vow, “If I am cured of my illness, then my camel will be sā’ibah.” Then such a camel was treated as a baḥīrah. Waṣīlah: a she-goat. If a goat gave birth to a she-goat, they would keep it for themselves; if she brought forth a he-goat, they would offer it to their idols. But if she brought forth a male and a female, then they would not offer the he-goat to their idols. The she-goat born with a he-goat was known as waṣīlah. Ḥāmī: a he-camel. If a he-camel had begotten ten camels, the Arabs used to regard it as a sacred animal: they refrained from riding on its back, and they did not prevent it from water or grass.

O you who believe! When the death visites any of you, there should be witnessing process between you at the bequeathing—two just men among you (i.e., believers). And if you are travelling in the land when the infliction of death befalls you and two menfrom among the believers are not available, then two others from other people (i.e., non-Muslims) should be asked to witness the bequeathing. You should detain these two witnesses after the prayer. But if you doubt their truthfulness, then they should be asked to swear by God that “We will not sell it (i.e., our testimony) at any price, even though the ‘buyer’ be a near kinsman nor will we hide the testimony of God, for then we would surely be among the sinners.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! The witness between you, when death approaches any of you, while making a bequest, shall be two fair men from among yourselves—or two from among others, if you are journeying in the land and the affliction of death visits you. You shall detain the two of them after the prayer, and, if you have any doubt, they shall vow by Allah, ‘We will not sell it for any gain, even if it were a relative, nor will we conceal the testimony of Allah, for then we would indeed be among the sinners.’Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, testimony [should be taken] among you when death approaches one of you at the time of bequest - [that of] two just men from among you or two others from outside if you are traveling through the land and the disaster of death should strike you. Detain them after the prayer and let them both swear by Allāh if you doubt [their testimony, saying], "We will not exchange it [i.e., our oath] for a price [i.e., worldly gain], even if he should be a near relative, and we will not withhold the testimony of [i.e., ordained by] Allāh. Once a Muslim known as Tamīm ad-Dāry was travelling with two Christians. On the way he became seriously ill. Just before his death, he entrusted all his belongings to the two Christians and requested them to take them to his family at Madinah. There were a few things made of gold in Tamīm’s belongings which he was taking for trade. The two co-travellers kept the gold for themselves and returned the other items to Tamīm’s family. When the family checked the belongings, they found that the things made of gold were missing. When they inquired from the two Christians, they were told that there was no such thing when Tamīm entrusted his belongings to them. Tamīm’s family brought the case to the Prophet. But because of a lack of evidence, the Prophet let the Christians go free. After some time, Tamīm’s family found the golden vessels in possession of the two Christians. They were brought to the Prophet, who returned the stolen property to the rightful owner after asking them to take an oath that it was their rightful property. After this incident, the following verses were revealed:
But if it becomes known that the witnesses have been guilty of the sin of distortingtheir testimony, then two other persons (from the heirs who have a claim against the first witnesses) shall stand in their places and swear by Allāh that “Our testimony is truer than the testimony of the first two witnesses, and we have not exceeded the limits, for then we would surely be among the unjust.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
But if it is found that both of them were guilty of a sin, then two others shall stand up in their place from among those nearest in kinship to the claimants and swear by Allah: ‘Our testimony is surely truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed, for then we would indeed be among the wrongdoers.’Ali Quli Qarai
But if it is found that those two were guilty of sin [i.e., perjury], let two others stand in their place [who are] foremost [in claim] from those who have a lawful right. And let them swear by Allāh, "Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed. Indeed, we would then be of the wrongdoers."Saheeh International
