The Qur’ān

25:1

Blessed is He who sent down the Measure of Distinction (al-Furqān) upon His servant, Muḥammad, so that he may be a warner of Allāh’s punishment to the people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Al-Furqān is one of the names of the Qur’ān and it means “the separator between truth and falsity.” The Qur’ān being the last revelation of Allāh is the standard of truth for all other scriptures, books and ideas.

25:2

Blessed is He to whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, and who has not taken unto Himself a son, nor has He any partner in the Kingdom. He is the one who has created everything and then assigned to it a measure of sustenance. He is the Creator as well as the Nourisher of all.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:3

But the idolators have taken besides Him gods who do not create anything; on the contrary, these gods themselves are created, and they do not control whatever is harmful or beneficial to themselves, neither do they have any say in death or life, or the resurrection after death!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Meccans’ Objection Against the Qur’ān and the Prophet

25:4

Their Objection Against the Qur’ān: Those who disbelieve, say: “This is nothing but a lie which he (Muḥammad) has forged, and other people have helped him at it.” By making such a statement, they have indeed responded unfairly and insidiously.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:5

And they also said, “This Qur’ān is just stories of the ancient people which he has gotten written and which are read out to him in mornings and evenings.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:6

O Muḥammad, in answer to such accusations, just say: “It has been sent down by the God who knows the secrets in the heaven and the earth. And He postpones your punishment and gives you time to repent because He is surely Most-Forgiving, Merciful.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:7

Their Objection Against Muḥammad: And they also say: “What is the matter with this Messenger of God—he eats food and walks about the markets just like us! How can we believe in him? Yes, if an angel had been sent down to him whom we could see with our eyes and who would be a warner of God’s punishment with him—then we might believe in him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:8

Or if an unusual treasure would be sent down to him; or if there was a miraculous garden for him from which he would be eating—then we might have believed in him!” And the unjust among them said to the Muslims, “You are only following a man who has been bewitched.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:9

Look at their audacity, O Muḥammad, how they give you examples! Alas, they have gone astray; and therefore, they are unable to find a way.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:10

Blessed is the He who, if He wants, can make for you gardens better than these examples that they have given; He can make for you gardens beneath which rivers flow, and He can make for you palaces in them.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:11

They, the unbelievers, have indeed rejected the belief in the Hour of doom and judgement. And for one who rejects the Hour, We have prepared a burning fire;S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:12

when they shall come into its sight from a distant place, they shall hear it raging and exhaling.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:13

And when they are cast into a narrow place in it, bound to one another, they shall at that time let out a loud lament.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:14

In response to their lament, they will be told: “Do not let out just one loud lament; let out many loud laments!”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:15

O Muḥammad, say: “Is this better as a final abode or the garden of eternity which has been promised to those who guard themselves against evil? That garden shall be a reward and a final resort for them;S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:16

in it they have whatever they desire, forever—this is a binding promise on your Lord.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:17

On the day when He shall gather them along with whatever they worshipped besides Allāh (i.e., angels or other humans), He shall ask those who were being worshipped: “Was it you who led astray these servants of Mine, or did they go astray from the path by themselves?”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:18

They, the angels and other humans who had been idolized, shall say: “Glory be to Thee, O Allāh! It was not befitting us to take any guardians besides You—so how could we have asked them to worship us besides You? But You blessed them and their fathers with worldly bounties, and they got engrossed in them so much until they forgot the Reminder (i.e., the Qur’ān). They indeed were a people in perdition.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:19

So those whom you idolized will surely reject your statements on the Day of Judgement; you shall neither be able to divert the punishment nor help yourselves in any way. And whosoever among you is unjust, We shall make him taste a great chastisement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:20

As for their amazement that God has sent a human being as His messenger, then know that We did not send from among the messengers before you anyone but that they used to eat the food and walk about in the markets. We have made some of you as a means of test and trial for others; will you then bear the hardship patiently? And indeed your Lord is All-SeeingS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:21

And those who do not anticipate meeting Us on the Day of Judgement, they say: “If only the angels had been sent down upon us or we could see our Lord, then we might believe.” By such statements, they have indeed thought arrogantly of themselves and have transgressed a great insolence.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:22

On the Day of Judgement, when they shall indeed see the angels, there will be no joy on that day for the guilty people. And the angels shall say to them: “Keep away and stay out!”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:23

And We shall come across whatever they have done of good deeds, then We shall render them useless like floating dust particles!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:24

The inhabitants of the Paradise shall be, on that day, in the best of abodes and better resting place.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:25

And on the day when the heaven shall burst asunder with the clouds, and the angels shall be sent down in groups—S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:26

on that day, the Kingdom shall rightly belong to the Beneficent God. And it shall be a difficult day for the unbelievers:S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:27

on that day, the unjust person shall bite his hands out of regret, saying: “O! if only I had followed the way of Islam with the Prophet!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:28

Woe unto me! If only I had not taken so-and-so for a friend!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:29

Certainly he led me astray from the Reminder (i.e., the Qur’ān) after it had come to me!” And the Satan will indeed abandon the human being.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:30

On that day, the Messenger will say: “O my Lord! Surely my people have treated this Qur’ān as a forsaken thing.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:31

And, as part of the overall theme of test and trial in this world, We have allowed for every prophet an enemy from among the guilty people; and so O Muḥammad, you also have enemies but remember your Lord is sufficient for you as a Guide and Helper.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Another Objection Against the Qur’ān and the Prophet

25:32

And those who disbelieve say: “If only the Qur’ān had been sent down on him all at once, then we would have believed in him.” These are just lame excuses! It has been revealed in this manner so that We may strengthen your heart by it. And We have revealed it in a well- arranged, gradual manner.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:33

And they will not bring to you an example or an argument but that We shall bring to you one which is based on truth and which has a better interpretation.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:34

Those who shall be sent to Hell with their faces on the ground, theirs is the worst abode and they are the most further away from the path of truth.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:35

And We certainly gave Mūsa the Book, We appointed his brother Hārūn with him as a vizier,S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

As a response to the idol-worshippers’ demand that angels be sent as messengers, Allāh gives the example of past prophets who were humans just like Prophet Muḥammad:

25:36

and then We said, “Go both of you to the people who have rejected Our signs.” But since those people did not heed to the call of Mūsa and Hārūn, We destroyed them completely.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:37

And remember the people of Nūḥ: when they rejected the messengers, We drowned them and made them into a sign for the people. We indeed have prepared a painful chastisement for the unjust people!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:38

And remember the ‘Ād, the Thamūd, the Dwellers of the Well and many generations between them—S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:39

to each one of them, We gave examples, and when they did not heed Our words, We utterly destroyed each one of them.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:40

O Muḥammad, on their way to Syria, certainly they, the people of Mecca, have often passed by the town Sodom on which the evil rain descended—did they not see it? Nay, it had no effect on them because they did not expect or believe in being raised back to life for judgement!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

God’s Power and Glory

25:41

When they see you, O Muḥammad, they do not hold you but in contempt: “Is this the one whom Allāh has sent as a messenger?!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:42

He indeed had nearly led us astray from our gods had we not stood firmly by them!” When they will soon see the chastisement, they will know who has strayed away from the right path.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:43

O Muḥammad! Have you seen him who has taken his desires for his god? Will you then be counsel for him and try to guide him to the right path?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:44

Or do you think that most of them hear and understand? No, they are beyond redemption because they will not listen to or contemplate what you say. They are nothing but mindless beings like the cattle; nay, they are even more astray from the path than the cattle.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:45

How can you doubt God if you have a hearing heart and a thinking mind? Have you not considered the wonders of your Lord’s creations: (1) How He moves the shade by extending it? If He had wished, He could have made it stationary. And We have made the sun a source for moving the shade.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:46

Then We shorten the shade as if pulling it towards Ourselves, shortening it little by little till sunset when it disappears completely.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:47

(2) He is the one who made the night a cover of darkness for you just like a dress, and made the sleep as a means of rest for you; and He made the daytime as a time of rising up for work and seeking sustenance.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:48

(3) He is the one who sends the winds as good tiding before His mercy—and We send down from the cloud clean waterS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:49

so that We may revive the dead land and so that We may water some of what We have created: the cattle and countless people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:50

Certainly We have rotated the rain among them so that they may be mindful of My blessings, but the majority of people refused to be anything but ungrateful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Another Objection Against the Qur’ān and the Prophet

God’s Power and Glory

25:51

If We had wished, We could have certainly raised a prophet as a warner in every town, but We decided to send you, O Muḥammad, as a prophet for all people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

25:52

So do not follow the unbelievers and strive against them intellectually through the Qur’ān a mighty struggle.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
