Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tuqaddimoo bayna yadayi Allahi warasoolihi wattaqooAllaha inna Allaha sameeAAun AAaleem
O you who believe! In the matters of thesharī‘ah, do not go ahead of or take precedence before Allāh and His Messenger and hissuccessors; and fear displeasing Allāh in suchissues because Allāh surely is All-Hearing and All-Knowing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not venture ahead of Allah and His Apostle, and be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah is all-hearing, all-knowing.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not put [yourselves] before Allāh and His Messenger but fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.Saheeh International
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoola tarfaAAoo aswatakum fawqa sawti annabiyyiwala tajharoo lahu bilqawli kajahri baAAdikumlibaAAdin an tahbata aAAmalukumwaantum la tashAAuroon
O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet. And do not talk loudly to him as you speak to one another. Heed to these two commands, lest all your deeds become forfeited in such a way that you would not even realize it.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and do not speak aloud to him like you shout to one another, lest your works should fail without your being aware.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet or be loud to him in speech like the loudness of some of you to others, lest your deeds become worthless while you perceive not.Saheeh International
This verse is not limited to the Prophet’s life; it also continues now. So if a Muslim knows that a certain ruling is confirmed from Allāh and the Prophet, then he should not oppose it, otherwise it will be as if he has raised his voice against them. A Muslim can always contemplate, research and seek clarification to understand a confirmed ruling and its reason, but cannot raise an objection against it.
Surely those who lower their voices in the presence of the Messenger of Allāh are the people whose souls have been tested by Allāh for their piety (taqwa); for them, and for thosewho heed to the above command, is forgiveness and a great reward.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed those who lower their voices in the presence of the Apostle of Allah—they are the ones whose hearts Allah has tested for Godwariness. For them will be forgiveness and a great reward.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, those who lower their voices before the Messenger of Allāh - they are the ones whose hearts Allāh has tested for righteousness. For them is forgiveness and great reward.Saheeh International
During the last years of the Prophet’s life, many groups came to Medina to visit him. Among those visitors, the Bedouins behaved in a way that even Allāh did not like. Whenever they entered Medina, they would go straight to the Prophet’s house and call him out to see him; they did not realize that the Prophet was entitled to some privacy and rest. Surely most of the people who call you “O Muḥammad” from outside the chambers do not understand.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed those who call you from behind the apartments, most of them do not use their reason.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, those who call you, [O Muḥammad], from behind the chambers - most of them do not use reason.Saheeh International
The original words in Arabic are min warā’ which mean “from behind,” but in accordance with the context, I have translated it as “from outside.”
If they patiently waited until you came out to them, this would be better for them. And Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Had they been patient until you came out for them, it would have been better for them, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
And if they had been patient until you [could] come out to them, it would have been better for them. But Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International

O you who believe! If a sinful person (suchas Walīd) comes to you with news or a reportabout a person or a people, investigate his report lest you harm a people out of ignorance and then regret what you have done.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! If a vicious character brings you some news, verify it, lest you should visit [harm] on some people out of ignorance, and then become regretful for what you have done.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.Saheeh International
Walīd bin ‘Uqbah bin Abi Mu‘īṭ, an Umayyad, was sent by the Prophet to the tribe of Banī Muṣtalaq to collect zakāt. In the past, Walīd and Banī Muṣtalaq were enemies of one another. When the people of Banī Muṣtalaq came to know that Walīd was coming as a zakāt collector, they came forward to welcome him. However, when Walīd saw them from afar, he thought they had come to fight him. He immediately turned back to Medina before even meeting Banī Muṣtalaq and reported to the Prophet, “The tribe of Banī Muṣtalaq have given up Islam and refused to pay zakāt.”When the representatives of Banī Muṣtalaq came to Medina to inquire about the strange attitude of Walīd, they found the Prophet upset with them. It was about this false report of Walīd bin ‘Uqbah that Allāh revealed the following verse:
Az-Zamakhsharī, Tafsīr al-Kashshāf, vol. 3, p. 129.
O you the believers, know that the Messenger of Allāh is among you; if he were to obey you in most things, for example, in thecase of Walīd’s false report, you surely would fall in trouble. But Allāh has saved you from trouble by endearing the faith to you, adorning it for your hearts and arousing your dislike towards disbelief, transgression, and disobedience. These people who follow the Prophet are the rightly guided ones.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Know that the Apostle of Allah is among you. Should he comply with you in many matters, you would surely suffer. But Allah has endeared faith to you and made it appealing in your hearts, and He has made hateful to you faithlessness, transgression and disobedience. It is such who are the right-minded—Ali Quli Qarai
And know that among you is the Messenger of Allāh. If he were to obey you in much of the matter, you would be in difficulty, but Allāh has endeared to you the faith and has made it pleasing in your hearts and has made hateful to you disbelief, defiance and disobedience. Those are the [rightly] guided.Saheeh International
If two parties of believers, or two people, fight with each other, then do not just stand as on-lookers, but go forward to make peace between them. But if one of them refuses to make peace andcontinues to oppress the other, you should fight the oppressing party until it agrees to return to and heed the command of Allāh. When the oppressor heeds the commandments of Allāh, then make peace between them based on justice and act with equity. Indeed Allāh loves those who act with equity.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If two groups of the faithful fight one another, make peace between them. But if one party of them aggresses against the other, fight the one which aggresses until it returns to Allah’s ordinance. Then, if it returns, make peace between them fairly, and do justice. Indeed Allah loves the just.Ali Quli Qarai
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allāh. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allāh loves those who act justly.Saheeh International

Why should a Muslim bother himself to make peace between two Muslims? Surely, the believers are but brethren; therefore, if two believers fight each other, youshould make peace between your brothers. Andwhile making peace act justly and fear displeasing Allāh so that He may have mercy on you.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The faithful are indeed brothers. Therefore, make peace between your brothers and be wary of Allah, so that you may receive [His] mercy.Ali Quli Qarai
The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allāh that you may receive mercy.Saheeh International

(1) O you who believe! A people should not laugh at, or make fun of, other people because possibly those who are being laughed at may be better, in the view of Allāh, than those wholaugh. Nor should women laugh at other women because possibly those who are being laughed at may be better, in the view of Allāh, than those who laugh.(2) Do not find fault with your Muslim brothers; instead, pay more attention to self-criticism.(3) Do not call one another insulting nicknames because calling someone bad names after hisdeclaration of the faith is itself a transgression. And those who indulge in these wrongful actsand do not ask forgiveness for their sins; they are unjust people.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Let not any people ridicule another people: it may be that they are better than they are; nor let women [ridicule] women: it may be that they are better than they are. And do not defame one another, nor insult one another by [calling] nicknames. How evil are profane names subsequent to faith! As for those who are not penitent [of their past conduct]—such are the wrongdoers.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name [i.e., mention] of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.Saheeh International
As the Muslims have been declared brethren of each other, they must respect the rights of one another. These rights are reciprocal:
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanooijtaniboo katheeran mina aththanni innabaAAda aththanni ithmun walatajassasoo wala yaghtab baAAdukum baAAdanayuhibbu ahadukum an ya/kula lahma akheehimaytan fakarihtumoohu wattaqoo Allaha inna Allahatawwabun raheem
(4) O you who believe! Avoid most of the suspicious thoughts about other Muslims; for surely suspicion in some cases is a sin. (5). And do not spy on each other.(6) Nor should some of you backbite others. Does any one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?! Surely you despise it. So fear the punishment of Allāh for violating these rights of aMuslim brother. Indeed Allāh is Most Forgiving and Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins. And do not spy on one another or backbite. Will any of you love to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it. Be wary of Allah; indeed Allah is all-clement, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful.Saheeh International
Suspicion leads to spying and spying in turn leads to backbiting. Avoidance of suspicion helps in refraining from spying on others and thus backbiting.

O the people! We have created you of a male and a female (i.e., Adam and Ḥawwā), and then We made you into different races and tribes o that you may know and recognize each other. Every person is from Adam and Ḥawwā. Then Allāh divided them into different tribes and races. These physical differences are not a standard for preference or superiority of one over others. Besides knowledge and jihād, the only mark of distinction in Islam is taqwa, i.e., piety and righteousness. Surely the most honourable of you in Allāh’s sight is the one who is most pious among you; indeed, Allāh is All-Knowing and Aware.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O mankind! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you nations and tribes that you may identify yourselves with one another. Indeed the noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the most Godwary among you. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-aware.Ali Quli Qarai
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allāh is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing and Aware.Saheeh International
One of the most abhorring features of human society is racial discrimination. Almost every country and community suffers from this social disease to varying degrees. Therefore, Allāh addresses humanity:
Qalati al-aAArabu amannaqul lam tu/minoo walakin qooloo aslamna walammayadkhuli al-eemanu fee quloobikum wa-in tuteeAAooAllaha warasoolahu la yalitkum min aAAmalikumshay-an inna Allaha ghafoorun raheem
The Arabs of the desert say, Muḥammad! We believe in you and your God.” Tell them: “You have not believed in my Lord or me;however, you should say, ‘We submit (aslamnā) ourselves to your Lord,’ because the faith (imān) has not yet entered into your hearts. But if you sincerely obey Allāh and His Messenger, He will not diminish anything from your deeds. Surely Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.” “Islam” is a verbal confession, whereas “imān” is a spiritual conviction.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The Bedouins say, ‘We have faith.’ Say, ‘You do not have faith yet; rather, say, ‘‘We have embraced Islam,’’ for faith has not yet entered into your hearts. Yet if you obey Allah and His Apostle, He will not stint anything of [the reward of] your works. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.’Ali Quli Qarai
The bedouins say, "We have believed." Say, "You have not [yet] believed; but say [instead], 'We have submitted,' for faith has not yet entered your hearts. And if you obey Allāh and His Messenger, He will not deprive you from your deeds of anything. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."Saheeh International
The Bedouin tribe of Banī Asad was overcome by famine. They came to Medina and declared themselves Muslims. Then they asked the Prophet to give them some of the zakāt. They talked to the Prophet in such a way as if they were doing a favour by becoming Muslims and that he was obliged to help them.
The believers (mu’minīn) are only those who believe in Allāh and His Messenger fromthe heart, and then they never entertain any doubt in their faith, and they struggle hard with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allāh. These are truthful believers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The faithful are only those who have attained faith in Allah and His Apostle and then have never doubted, and who wage jihad with their possessions and their persons in the way of Allah. It is they who are the truthful.Ali Quli Qarai
The believers are only the ones who have believed in Allāh and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allāh. It is those who are the truthful.Saheeh International

O Muḥammad, tell those Arabs: Are you appraising Allāh about your religion by sayingthat “We believe?” Allāh knows what is in the heavens and what is in the earth. Allāh knows all things.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

They count it as a favour to you that they have embraced Islam. Say, ‘Do not count your embracing of Islam as a favour to me. No, it is Allah who has done you a favour in that He has guided you to faith, if you are truthful [in your claim].Ali Quli Qarai
