Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth exalts Allāh, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.Saheeh International
After migrating to Medina, the Prophet Muḥammad (s) concluded a covenant between the Muslims and the Jewish minority of that city. Both communities will be free to practise their faith, and they will help one another against any group that attacks the city. However, after the Battle of Badr, Banū Qaynaqā‘, the Jewish tribe was the first to retract from the alliance with the Muslims. Within their fortress, they started preparing for war. The Muslims besieged the fort for fifteen days. Finally, the Banū Qaynaqā‘ asked for peace. The Prophet banished them, allowing them to take their moveable possessions to Syria. The banishment of the Banū Qaynaqā‘ enraged its sister tribe, the Banū an-Naḍīr. Encouraged by the Meccans and local hypocrites, they plotted to kill the Prophet. When their plot was exposed, the Prophet gave them an ultimatum that since they had broken the treaty, they should leave Medina in ten days. ‘Abdullāh ibn Ubay, a hypocrite, encouraged them not to leave Medina, promising them help with 2000 fighters. Of course, that help never arrived! This chapter talks about their expulsion.

Allāh is the one who expelled the unbelievers from among People of the Book, the Banū an-Naḍīr, from their homes at the first confrontation between them and you. You thought they would not go out, and they themselves thought their fortresses would protect them from Allāh. So Allāh approached them from whence they had not reckoned—He cast terror in their hearts to the extent that they started destroying their houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So take a lesson, O you who have insight.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
It is He who expelled the faithless belonging to the People of the Book from their homes at the outset of [their] en masse banishment. You did not think that they would go out, and they thought their fortresses would protect them from Allah. But Allah came at them from whence they did not suppose and He cast terror into their hearts. They demolish their houses with their own hands and the hands of the faithful. So take lesson, O you who have insight!Ali Quli Qarai
It is He who expelled the ones who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You did not think they would leave, and they thought that their fortresses would protect them from Allāh; but [the decree of] Allāh came upon them from where they had not expected, and He cast terror into their hearts [so] they destroyed their houses by their [own] hands and the hands of the believers. So take warning, O people of vision.Saheeh International

If Allāh had not decreed the banishment for them, He would have punished them in this world, and, of course, in the hereafter, they shall have the chastisement of the Fire.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If Allah had not ordained banishment for them, He would have surely punished them in this world, and in the Hereafter, there is the punishment of the Fire for them.Ali Quli Qarai
And if not that Allāh had decreed for them evacuation, He would have punished them in [this] world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire.Saheeh International

This punishment is because they acted adversely to Allāh and His Messenger; and whoever acts adversely to Allāh, then he should know that Allāh is severe in requiting.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
That is because they defied Allah and His Apostle; and whoever defies Allah, Allah is indeed severe in retribution.Ali Quli Qarai
That is because they opposed Allāh and His Messenger. And whoever opposes Allāh - then indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.Saheeh International

Whatever palm trees you cut down or leave them standing on their roots, that is by Allāh’s permission to disgrace the wrongdoers.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing on their roots, it was by Allah’s will and in order that He may disgrace the transgressors.Ali Quli Qarai
Whatever you have cut down of [their] palm trees or left standing on their trunks - it was by permission of Allāh and so He would disgrace the defiantly disobedient.Saheeh International
In order to widen the path towards the fortress or compel the Banū an-Naḍīr to come out, the Prophet asked the Muslims to cut down some of the palm trees. The Banū an-Naḍīr said, “Had you not forbidden your followers from such acts?” The response came from Allāh:
Wama afaa Allahu AAalarasoolihi minhum fama awjaftum AAalayhi min khaylin walarikabin walakinna Allaha yusalliturusulahu AAala man yashao wallahuAAala kulli shay-in qadeer
Whatever spoils Allāh has restored to His Messenger from them, you do not have anyshare in it since you did not ride towards it with neither any horse nor any camel as their fortresswas near Medina, but Allāh gives the upper hand to His Messengers over whomsoever He wishes, and Allāh has power over everything.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The spoils that Allah gave to His Apostle from them, you did not spur any horse for its sake, nor any riding camel, but Allah makes His apostles prevail over whomever He wishes, and Allah has power over all things.Ali Quli Qarai
And what Allāh restored [of property] to His Messenger from them - you did not spur for it [in an expedition] any horses or camels, but Allāh gives His messengers power over whom He wills, and Allāh is over all things competent.Saheeh International
Whatever possessions of the unbelievers accrue to the Muslims without warfare is known as “fa’y;” literally, it means “to return, to restore.” Referring to the possessions left behind by the Banū an-Naḍīr, Allāh says:
Whatever possessions of the unbelievers accrue to the Muslims without warfare is known as “fa’y;” literally, it means “to return, to restore.” Referring to the possessions left behind by the Banū an-Naḍīr,

Based on the pre-Islamic practice, the elite came to the Prophet to get their share of the spoils. Whatever Allāh has restored to His Messenger from the possessions of the people of the towns (such as Banū an-Naḍīr), that is for Allāh, for His Messenger, for his relatives: especially those among them who are the orphans, the needy, and the stranded traveller—so that it does not become a means of perpetual circulation among the rich among you. As a general rule, donot question the Prophet’s decision: whatever the Messenger gives you, take it; and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it; and fear displeasing Allāh, verily Allāh is severe in retribution.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The spoils that Allah gave to His Apostle from the people of the townships, are for Allah and the Apostle, the relatives and the orphans, the needy and the traveller, so that they do not circulate among the rich among you. Take whatever the Apostle gives you, and refrain from whatever he forbids you, and be wary of Allah. Indeed Allah is severe in retribution.Ali Quli Qarai
And what Allāh restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allāh and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the needy and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allāh; indeed, Allāh is severe in penalty.Saheeh International
The Prophet can distribute Allāh’s share as he deems appropriate for the poor immigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties while they were seeking the grace of Allāh and His pleasure, and were helping Allāh and His Messenger. These are the truthful ones.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
[They are also] for the poor Emigrants who have been expelled from their homes and [wrested of] their possessions, who seek grace from Allah and [His] pleasure and help Allah and His Apostle. It is they who are the truthful.Ali Quli Qarai
For the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their properties, seeking bounty from Allāh and [His] approval and supporting [the cause of] Allāh and His Messenger, [there is also a share]. Those are the truthful.Saheeh International
Similarly, for some needy inhabitants of Medina, those who had prepared the abode in that city and a place of faith before the immigrants came, they love whosoever has migrated towards them, they do not find in their hearts any need for what they, the immigrants, were given from the spoils, and they prefer them over themselves even though poverty be their lot. And whosoever is protected from their own greed, they are the successful ones.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
[They are as well] for those who were settled in the land and [abided] in faith before them, who love those who migrate toward them, and do not find in their breasts any privation for that which is given to them, but prefer [the Immigrants] to themselves, though poverty be their own lot. And those who are saved from their own greed—it is they who are the felicitous.Ali Quli Qarai
And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [i.e.,al-Madīnah] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what they [i.e., the emigrants] were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.Saheeh International
And also for those who came to Islam after them, who say, “Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who preceded us in faith, and do not allow any latent resentment in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord! You indeed are Compassionate and Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
And [also for] those who came in after them, who say, ‘Our Lord, forgive us and our brethren who were our forerunners in the faith, and do not put any rancour in our hearts toward the faithful. Our Lord, You are indeed most kind and merciful.’Ali Quli Qarai
And [there is a share for] those who come after them, saying, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful."Saheeh International
Then referring to the Hypocrites who promised to help Banū an-Naḍīr, Allāh says: Do not you, O Muḥammad, know of the hypocrites saying to their unbeliever brethren from the People of the Book (i.e., Banū an-Naḍīr) that: "If you are expelled, we will surely go forth with you and we will never obey anyone regarding you, and if you are attacked, we will surely help you.” However, Allāh bears witness that they are indeed liars.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Have you not regarded the hypocrites who say to their brethren, the faithless from among the People of the Book, ‘If you are expelled, we will surely go out with you, and we will never obey anyone against you, and if you are fought against we will surely help you,’ and Allah bears witness that they are indeed liars.Ali Quli Qarai
Have you not considered those who practice hypocrisy, saying to their brothers [i.e., associates] who have disbelieved among the People of the Scripture, "If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and we will not obey, in regard to you, anyone - ever; and if you are fought, we will surely aid you." But Allāh testifies that they are liars.Saheeh International

If the Banū an-Naḍīr were expelled, the hypocrites would not go forth with them, and if they were attacked, the hypocrites would not help them. And even if they were to help the Banū an-Naḍīr, they would surely turn their backs to flee from combat; and then they would not be helped.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Surely, if they were expelled they will not go out with them, and if they were fought against they will not help them, and [even if] they were to help them they will turn their backs [to flee] and eventually they will not be helped.Ali Quli Qarai
If they are expelled, they will not leave with them, and if they are fought, they will not aid them. And [even] if they should aid them, they will surely turn their backs; then [thereafter] they will not be aided.Saheeh International
You Muslims indeed are a greater sourceof fear in their hearts than Allāh. That is because they are people who are not aware of God’s greatness.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed they have a greater awe of you in their hearts than of Allah. That is because they are a lot who do not understand.Ali Quli Qarai
You [believers] are more fearful within their breasts than Allāh. That is because they are a people who do not understand.Saheeh International

They will not fight against you all together except in fortified towns or from behind walls because they fear you. However, when they fight among themselves, their might is severe! You consider him to be united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are people who do not understand.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
They will not fight against you together except in fortified townships or from behind walls. Their fierceness is great only within themselves. You suppose them to be united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a lot who do not exercise their reason,Ali Quli Qarai
They will not fight you all except within fortified cities or from behind walls. Their violence [i.e., enmity] among themselves is severe. You think they are together, but their hearts are diverse. That is because they are a people who do not reason.Saheeh International

Their example is like those of the recent past before them, like Banū Qaynaqā‘ (another Jewish tribe of Medina) that had violated the covenant earlier and were consequently expelled: they were also promised help by the hypocrites and then were betrayed by them. They tasted the evil result of their action, and, in the hereafter, they shall have a painful chastisement.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
just like those who tasted the evil consequence of their conduct recently before them, and there is a painful punishment for them.Ali Quli Qarai
[Theirs is] like the example of those shortly before them: they tasted the bad consequence of their affair, and they will have a painful punishment.Saheeh International
An example of a hypocrite is like Satan when he says to a human being, “Disbelieve.” Then when he disbelieved, Satan said, “I verily disassociate myself from you; I surely fear Allāh, the Lord of the universe.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
[The hypocrites are] like Satan when he tells man to disbelieve, but when he disbelieves, he says, ‘I am absolved of you. Indeed I fear Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.’Ali Quli Qarai
[The hypocrites are] like the example of Satan when he says to man, "Disbelieve." But when he disbelieves, he says, "Indeed, I am disassociated from you. Indeed, I fear Allāh, Lord of the worlds."Saheeh International
The end result of both –the disbeliever andthe Satan– will be that they both shall be in the Fire forever, and that is the recompense of the unjust ones.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
So the fate of both is that they will be in the Fire, to remain in it [forever]. Such is the requital of the wrongdoers.Ali Quli Qarai
So the outcome for both of them is that they will be in the Fire, abiding eternally therein. And that is the recompense of the wrongdoers.Saheeh International

O you who believe! Fear displeasing Allāh by following His commandments, and let every soul seriously consider what it has sent forth for tomorrow, the Day of Judgement: whetherit is good or evil; and fear displeasing Allāh byreforming your behaviour. O you who have faith! Be wary of Allah, and let every soul consider what it sends ahead for Tomorrow, and be wary of Allah. Allah is indeed well aware of what you doAli Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, fear Allāh. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Aware of what you do.Saheeh International
After describing the example of Banū an-Naḍīr, the hypocrites and the Satan, Allāh now reminds the believers to focus on the ultimate goal of life: salvation in the hereafter.

So send forth good deeds for your eternal abode, and you cannot do so but by remembering Allāh; and do not be like those who who forgot Allāh, and so He caused them to forget their own selves and their reality asbeing dependent on Him—they are surely the transgressors.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Do not be like those who forget Allah, so He makes them forget their own souls. It is they who are the transgressors.Ali Quli Qarai
And be not like those who forgot Allāh, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.Saheeh International

Not equal are the inmates of the Fire and the inhabitants of paradise. It is the inhabitants of paradise who are the successful ones.Ali Quli Qarai
Not equal are the companions of the Fire and the companions of Paradise. The companions of Paradise - they are the attainers [of success].Saheeh International
Unfortunately, Allāh’s words do not soften the transgressors’ hearts. If We had sent down this Qur’ān upon a solid and tall mountain, you would surely have seen it turning humble and scattered because of Allāh’s fear with reverence. These are the examples that We set forth for the people so that they may reflect.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled [and] go to pieces with the fear of Allah. We draw such comparisons for mankind, so that they may reflect.Ali Quli Qarai
If We had sent down this Qur’ān upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and splitting from fear of Allāh. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.Saheeh International
