O you who believe! Do not take My enemy and your enemy for friends –expressing love for them, while they certainly disbelieved in the truth that has come to you, and they expelled the Messenger and you from Mecca because you believe in Allāh, your Lord– especially if you have gone forth in jihād in My way and to seek My good pleasure. You reveal to them the plan of the Prophet’smarch out of love in your hearts, while you shouldknow that I am aware of what you conceal and what you manifest, and whoever among you does that, he has surely lost the right path.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not take My enemy and your enemy for friends, [secretly] offering them affection, if you have set out for jihad in My way and to seek My pleasure, for they have certainly denied whatever has come to you of the truth, expelling the Apostle and you, because you have faith in Allah, your Lord. You secretly nourish affection for them, while I know well whatever you hide and whatever you disclose, and whoever among you does that has certainly strayed from the right way.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth, having driven out the Prophet and yourselves [only] because you believe in Allāh, your Lord. If you have come out for jihād [i.e., fighting or striving] in My cause and seeking means to My approval, [take them not as friends]. You confide to them affection [i.e., instruction], but I am most knowing of what you have concealed and what you have declared. And whoever does it among you has certainly strayed from the soundness of the way.Saheeh International
The Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah between the Muslims and the Meccans was signed in 6 AH. However, the Meccans violated one of its clauses, and so the Prophet decided to march to Mecca. Ḥāṭib bin Abi Balta'ah was an immigrant who had left his family in Mecca. He was a sincere Muslim, but out of concern for his family, he sent a letter to the leaders of Mecca warning them of the Prophet’s plan to march toward them. Allāh informed the Prophet about it, so he sent some Muslims with ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib to intercept the woman carrying the letter. They succeeded in this mission and came back with the letter. The Prophet then asked Ḥāṭib about this letter: Why? He said that since his family did not join him in the faith and migration, he was afraid that the Meccans would harm them, so he decided to send them this message, hoping that they would reciprocate by not harming his family and that he was also sure of the Prophet’s victory and that this letter would not hurt his march. The Prophet forgave Ḥātib.

If they overcome you on the battlefield, they will be your enemies and stretch their hands and their tongues towards you with evil, and they wish that you would disbelieve.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If they were to confront you they would be your enemies, and would stretch out against you their hands and [unleash] their tongues with evil [intentions], and they are eager that you [too] should be faithless.Ali Quli Qarai
If they gain dominance over you, they would be [i.e., behave] to you as enemies and extend against you their hands and their tongues with evil, and they wish you would disbelieve.Saheeh International
Your relatives and your children for whom yourevealed the Prophet’s plan to the enemies shall not avail you against your sin of betrayal on the Day of Resurrection: on that day, He (Allāh) will create a separation between you and them; and Allāh sees what you are doing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Your relatives and children will not avail you on the Day of Resurrection: He will separate you [from one another], and Allah watches what you do.Ali Quli Qarai
Never will your relatives or your children benefit you; the Day of Resurrection He will judge between you. And Allāh, of what you do, is Seeing.Saheeh International

In this matter, certainly there is for you in Ibrāhīm and those who were with him an excellent exemplar when they said to their own people: “Indeed we actively disassociate from you and whatever you worship besides Allāh; we reject you and your idol-worshipping, and between us and you enmity and hatred has emerged in our hearts forever until you believe in Allāh alone.” He is an example except when Ibrāhīm said to his uncle, “I will certainly ask forgiveness for you as I don’t possess anything for you against Allāh.” “Our Lord! In You, we put our trust, and to You, we turn inrepentance, and to You is the eventual destination.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
There is certainly a good exemplar for you in Abraham and those who were with him, when they said to their own people, ‘Indeed we repudiate you and whatever you worship besides Allah. We disown you, and enmity and hate have appeared between you and us for ever, unless you come to have faith in Allah alone,’ apart from Abraham’s saying to his father, ‘I will surely plead forgiveness for you, though I cannot avail you anything against Allah.’ ‘Our Lord! In You do we put our trust, and to You do we turn penitently, and toward You is the destination.Ali Quli Qarai
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allāh. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allāh alone" - except for the saying of Abraham to his father, "I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I have not [power to do] for you anything against Allāh. Our Lord, upon You we have relied, and to You we have returned, and to You is the destination.Saheeh International
So what about Ibrāhīm praying for his idol-worshipping uncle? That was an exceptional situation where he had promised his uncle to pray for him, but he disassociated himself once he realized his insolence.
The statement of Ibrāhīm and his followers in the earlier part of this verse continues:
See 9:114. Also see note under 6:74 for usage of the term “uncle” for “ab”.
Our Lord! Do not make us a source of trial for those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord; You are the Mighty, the Wise.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Our Lord! Do not make us a test for the faithless, and forgive us. Our Lord! Indeed You are the All-mighty, the All-wise.’Ali Quli Qarai
Our Lord, make us not [objects of] torment for the disbelievers and forgive us, our Lord. Indeed, it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."Saheeh International

Certainly there is for you an excellent example in them; of course, for one who hopes for Allāh’s guidance in this world and His graceon the Last Day; and whoever turns his back from true faith, then surely Allãh is He Who is Free from need, the Praised.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
There is certainly a good exemplar for you in them—for those who look forward to Allah and the Last Day—and anyone who refuses to comply [should know that] indeed Allah is the All-sufficient, the All-laudable.Ali Quli Qarai
There has certainly been for you in them an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allāh and the Last Day. And whoever turns away - then indeed, Allāh is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.Saheeh International
The command of repudiating friendship with the enemies is based on faith. It may be that Allāh will bring about friendship between you and those with whom Aadaytum minhum mawaddatan Allāh is Powerful, and at the same time, Allāḥ is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
It may be that Allah will bring about affection between you and those with whom you are at enmity, and Allah is all-powerful, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
Perhaps Allāh will put, between you and those to whom you have been enemies among them, affection. And Allāh is competent, and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International

Muslims’ attitude towards non-Muslims: As for those non-Muslims who have not fought against you on account of your religion nor have they expelled you from your homes, Allāh does not forbid you from showing kindness to them and acting justly towards them; surely Allāh loves those who act justly.S. Allah does not forbid you from dealing with kindness and justice with those [polytheists] who did not make war against you on account of religion and did not expel you from your homes. Indeed Allah loves the just.Ali Quli Qarai

Allah forbids you only in regard to those who made war against you on account of religion and expelled you from your homes and supported [the polytheists of Makkah] in your expulsion, that you make friends with them, and whoever makes friends with them—it is they who are the wrongdoers.Ali Quli Qarai

O you who believe! When believing women come to you as immigrants, then test them for their sincerity; of course, Allāh knows best the state of their faith. So if you ascertain them to be believing women, then do not turn them back to the unbelievers—after faith, neither these Muslim women are lawful to those non-Muslim men, nor are those men lawful to these women. However, give to the non-Muslimhusbands what they have spent as dowry. There shall be no sin upon you to marry them when you have given them their dowries. Do not hold on to marriage ties with non- Muslim wives. And when they join their non-Muslim family, you ask them for what you have spent as mahr and let them ask for what they have spent as dowry on their wives whohave joined the Muslim community. This is the judgement of Allāh that He judges between you on the basis of justice; verily, Allāh is Knowing, Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! When faithful women come to you as immigrants, test them. Allah knows best [the state of] their faith. Then, if you ascertain them to be [genuinely] faithful women, do not send them back to the faithless. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them, but give them what [dowry] they have spent [for them]. There is no sin upon you in marrying them when you have given them their dowries. Do not hold on to [conjugal] ties with faithless women. Demand [from the infidels] what you have spent [as dowries], and let the faithless demand [from you] what they have spent [as dowries]. That is Allah’s judgment; He judges between you, and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, examine [i.e., test] them. Allāh is most knowing as to their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers; they are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. But give them [i.e., the disbelievers] what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their due compensation [i.e., mahr]. And hold not to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent and let them [i.e., the disbelievers] ask for what they have spent. That is the judgement of Allāh; He judges between you. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.Saheeh International
One of the Ḥudaybiyyah treaty's term was that any Muslim who migrates from Mecca would be sent back, but if a Muslim of Medina decides to return to Mecca, he would not be sent back to Medina. A woman from Mecca came to the Prophet and declared that she had accepted Islam and would not return to her husband who was still a polytheist. The husband came to the Prophet and tried to get his wife back to Mecca based on the treaty. The Prophet replied that the clause of returning a Muslim immigrant only applied to men and not to women.

If anything of the dowry of your non-Muslim wives was ‘lost’ to the unbelievers (since they did not pay you back), and then circumstances turn in your favour (e.g., in jihad), then give to those whose wives went away (and their families did not pay) the like of what they spent in their dowry before you distributethe spoils. However, in this retaliation, fear displeasing Allāh in whom you believe.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
If anything [of the dowries] pertaining to your wives is not reclaimed from the faithless and then you have your turn, then give to those whose wives have left the like of what they have spent, and be wary of Allah in whom you have faith.Ali Quli Qarai
And if you have lost any of your wives to the disbelievers and you subsequently obtain [something], then give those whose wives have gone the equivalent of what they had spent. And fear Allāh, in whom you are believers.Saheeh International
O the Prophet! When the believing women come to you to pledge allegiance to you, then they should do so on theterms that they shall not associate anything with Allāh, that they shall not steal (especially fromtheir husbands), neither commit adultery, nor kill their children or come up with an accusation that they have forged in front of themselves byfalsely attributing the child to the husband, nor disobey you in what is right—then accept their allegiance and pray to Allāh to forgive them. Indeed Allāh is the Forgiving, the Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O Prophet! If faithful women come to you, to take the oath of allegiance to you, [pledging] that they shall not ascribe any partners to Allah, that they shall not steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor utter any slander that they may have intentionally fabricated, nor disobey you in what is right, then accept their allegiance, and plead for them to Allah for forgiveness. Indeed Allah is all-forgiving, all-mercifulAli Quli Qarai
O Prophet, when the believing women come to you pledging to you that they will not associate anything with Allāh, nor will they steal, nor will they commit unlawful sexual intercourse, nor will they kill their children, nor will they bring forth a slander they have invented between their arms and legs, nor will they disobey you in what is right - then accept their pledge and ask forgiveness for them of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International
In the conquest of Mecca, after the men pledged allegiance to the Prophet, the women also came:

O you who believe! Do not befriend the people against whom Allāh is wrathful like thehypocrites and the Jews of Medina: they have indeed despaired of the reward of the Hereafter just as the unbelievers who are the inhabitants of the graves have despaired.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not befriend a people at whom Allah is wrathful: they have despaired of the Hereafter, just as the faithless have despaired of the occupants of the graves.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not make allies of a people with whom Allāh has become angry. They have despaired of [reward in] the Hereafter just as the disbelievers have despaired of [meeting] the companions [i.e., inhabitants] of the graves.Saheeh International
