The successful emigration of the Prophet and Muslims to Medina had angered the Qurayshite leaders of Mecca, who wanted to see the destruction of the new faith. They began preparations to attack Medina. A trade caravan, under the leadership of Abū Sufyān, was sent to Syria; all the Qurayshite had put their money in it with the intention of spending the accrued profit on arms to fight against the Muslims.
When Abū Sufyān was returning from Syria, he feared that the Muslims might intercept the trade caravan that had only forty lightly equipped guards. So he sent a messenger in haste to the Quraysh to inform them of his fears. On receiving the message, a well-equipped army of one thousand Meccans marched towards Medina under the command of Abū Jahl. They had reached Badr (200 miles from Mecca and 80 miles from Medina) when news came that Abū Sufān’s caravan was passing just three miles on the seaside from the Qurayshite camp and that it had encountered no attack from the Muslims. But the Meccans were so eager to give battle to Muḥammad and his followers that they decided to proceed towards Medina. Was not the purpose of that year’s trade caravan this very battle? So why should they go back to Mecca when they already had one thousand well-equipped warriors enough to teach the Muslims a lesson? All this happened while they were camped at Badr.
Meanwhile, the news came in Medina that the trade caravan was coming from Syria (on the north), and the Meccan army was marching towards Medina (from the south). The Muslims had two alternatives: to attack the richly laden trade caravan with lightly equipped guards or to face the Meccan army with one thousand well-equipped warriors.
From the worldly point of view, the first alternative was the safest and most lucrative course as it had the least danger for the time being and also promised much booty. Quite a few Muslims preferred the first alternative, but Allāh recommended His Messenger to march out boldly against the well-armed army of the Meccans.

The Prophet marched with 313 men (who had only two horses and seventy camels between them) to meet the Meccan army, which had 1000 well-equipped men. The two forces met on Friday, the 17th of Ramadan, 2 A.H. (624 A.D.). When Prophet Muḥammad, peace be upon him, saw his small army fighting against 1000 unbelievers of Mecca, he prayed to Allāh: “O Allāh, here is the Quraysh with all her tribes seeking to belie your messenger. O Allāh, give us the assistance which You have promised. O Allāh, if this little army of the believers perishes, who will be there to worship you sincerely?” Allāh accepted the prayer of His most beloved Messenger: And remember when you sought aid from your Lord, He answered you, “I shall assist you with a thousand angels following one another,”S. The Meccan army had camped near the spring of Badr, and the ground of their campsite was of firm clay. On the other hand, the Muslims were far from the spring and thus had trouble getting water, and the ground under them was sandy which made their stand and manoeuvres difficult. To make matters worse, many Muslims had nocturnal discharge in their sleep and became ritually impure (najis). Then came the help of Allāh: And remember when He spread a cover of drowsiness over you as a security from Him and thus you slept peacefully. And He sent down upon you water from heaven to purify you with it, to take away from you the unclean insinuation of the Shayṭān, to strengthen your hearts and to plant your feet firmly with it. When the two armies readied themselves for battle, ‘Utbah bin Rabī’ah, Shaybah bin Rabī’ah and Walīd bin ‘Utbah came forward and challenged the Muslims to duel. On the Muslims’ side, Ḥamzah bin ‘Abdu ‘l-Muṭṭalib, ‘Ali bin Abī Ṭālib and ‘Ubaydah bin Ḥārith answered their challenge. In this individual combat, Ḥamzah killed Shaybah, ‘Ali killed Walīd, and then both of them went to assist ‘Ubaydah who had not yet finished ‘Utbah. After the death of these three leaders of the Meccan ranks, a pitched battle started. Both forces were fighting valiantly, but the Muslims were inspired by faith in the truth of Islam. At last, the Muslims gained victory over the enemy. The Meccans were driven back and left seventy dead; seventy of them were taken as prisoners. The Muslim force had lost fourteen men. Khums is an annual tax in which a Muslim has to pay one-fifth of certain things which he acquires as wealth. None of the schools of jurisprudence confine it to spoil of war. According to the Imams of Ahlul Bayt, the most common application of khums is the profit or surplus of one’s annual income after the expenditure. During the Prophet’s time, the usage of khums was restricted to the Hāshimite members of the Prophet’s tribe, as they were barred from zakāt. For details on the Qur’anic verse and history of khums, see my treatise, Khums — An Islamic Tax.

It was the day when you were on the nearest side of the valley, away from the water and on sandyground. And they (i.e., the Meccan army) were on the farthest side of the valley, near the waterand on firm ground. (While the caravan of AbūSufyān was below you.) Then Allāh helped you by sending rain which provided water for you and also changed your sandy ground into something firm, while the firm ground of the unbelievers was muddy. If you two parties had made a previous appointment for this encounter, you would certainly have disagreed about the appointment; but Allāh gathered the two parties suddenly so that He might determine the matter that was to be done: that is, proving the truth of Islam. So that whosoever thereafter “perishes” spiritually might “perish” by a clear proof, and whosoever “lives” spiritually might “live” by a clear proof. Surely Allāh is indeed Hearing, Knowing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
When you were on the nearer side, and they on the farther side, while the caravan was below you, and had you agreed together on an encounter, you would have certainly failed to keep the tryst, but in order that Allah may carry through a matter that was bound to be fulfilled, so that he who perishes might perish by a manifest proof, and he who lives may live on by a manifest proof, and Allah is indeed all-hearing, all-knowing.Ali Quli Qarai
[Remember] when you were on the near side of the valley, and they were on the farther side, and the caravan was lower [in position] than you. If you had made an appointment [to meet], you would have missed the appointment. But [it was] so that Allāh might accomplish a matter already destined - that those who perished [through disbelief] would perish upon evidence and those who lived [in faith] would live upon evidence; and indeed, Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.Saheeh International
O Muḥammad, remember when Allāh showed them to you in your dream as few. If He had shown them to you as many, you Muslims would have lost courage and you would have disputed about the matter, but Allāh saved you; He is the Best Knower of what is in the minds.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
When Allah showed them to you as few in your dream, and had He shown them as many, you would have lost heart, and disputed about the matter. But Allah spared you. Indeed He knows well what is in the breasts.Ali Quli Qarai
[Remember, O Muḥammad], when Allāh showed them to you in your dream as few; and if He had shown them to you as many, you [believers] would have lost courage and would have disputed in the matter [of whether to fight], but Allāh saved [you from that]. Indeed, He is Knowing of that within the breasts.Saheeh International
And remember when you met your enemy, He showed them to you in your eyes as few; and before the battle, He diminished you in their eyes so that Allāh might determine a matter that was to be done: that is, they might be lured to fightagainst you and be defeated. All the affairs are returned to Allāh.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
And when He showed them to you as few in your eyes, when you met them [on the battlefield], and He made you [appear] few in their eyes, [it was] in order that Allah may carry through a matter that was bound to be fulfilled, and to Allah all matters are returned.Ali Quli Qarai

I fear Allāh, Allāh is severe in requiting evil.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
When Satan made their deeds seem decorous to them, and said [to the faithless], ‘No one shall overcome you today from among all mankind, and I will stand by you.’ But when the two hosts sighted each other, he took to his heels, saying, ‘Indeed I am quit of you. And [remember] when Satan made their deeds pleasing to them and said, "No one can overcome you today from among the people, and indeed, I am your protector." The ones with whom you made a treaty but then they break their pledge every time, and they do not fear Allāh.Saheeh International
This verse refers to the Jewish tribes of Banū Qurayzah, Banū Qiyniqa’ and Banū Naḍīr residing in Medina and its vicinity. The Prophet had negotiated a treaty with them that they will not help the unbelievers of Mecca against the Muslims. But these tribes repeatedly broke the agreement: 1. They helped the Meccans in the battle of Badr by supplying arms. 2. They helped the Meccans in the battle of Khandaq. 3. They planned to kill the Prophet treacherously. Some details about these events will come in other chapters of the Qur’ān.

You are not allowed toattack them while the treaty is still intact. Indeed Allāh does not like the treacherous.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Prepare against them whatever you can of [military] power and war-horses, awing thereby the enemy of Allah, and your enemy, and others besides them, whom you do not know, but Allah knows them. The words “to frighten the enemy” clearly state that the reason for the military readiness of a Muslim state is to protect it from the enemy and safeguard peace; it is not meant for aggression.

If there are twenty patient andfirm men among you, they will overcome two hundred enemies; and if there are a hundred of you, they will overcome a thousand unbelievers because they, the unbelievers, are a people who do not understand.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O Prophet! Urge on the faithful to fight: If there be twenty patient men among you, they shall overcome two hundred; and if there be a hundred of you, they shall overcome a thousand of the faithless, for they are a lot who do not understand.Ali Quli Qarai
O Prophet, urge the believers to battle. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are steadfast], they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand.Saheeh International
Now Allāh has lightened for you yourresponsibility, knowing that there is spiritual weakness in you—so if there are a hundred patient men among you, they will overcome two hundred enemies; and if there are a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand enemies by the permission of Allāh; and Allāh is with the patient ones.S. Now, Allāh has lightened [the hardship] for you, and He knows that among you is weakness. So if there are from you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. These two verses show that spiritual strength and faith play an important role in deciding the outcome of a war. During the early days of the hijrah, when the Muslims were few but with a strong faith (which demonstrated itself in the form of “patience”), twenty of them would overcome two hundred. However, as time passed, the numbers increased but the quality of faith decreased, and thus they became spiritually weak—now, one hundred men were needed to overcome two hundred enemy soldiers. It is not for any prophet to have prisoners until he has fought vehemently in the land and defeated the enemy. Some Muslims, even before the battle’s conclusion, were trying to capture prisoners so that they could exchange them for a handsome ransom: You desire the vanities of this world, while Allāh desires the hereafter for you. Allāh is Mighty, Wise.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
A prophet may not take captives until he has thoroughly decimated [the enemy] in the land. You desire the transitory gains of this world, while Allah desires [for you] [the reward of] the Hereafter, and Allah is all-mighty, all-wise.Ali Quli Qarai
It is not for a prophet to have captives [of war] until he inflicts a massacre [upon Allāh's enemies] in the land. You [i.e., some Muslims] desire the commodities of this world, but Allāh desires [for you] the Hereafter. And Allāh is Exalted in Might and Wise.Saheeh International

If not for a decree from Allāh that preceded, you would have been touched for what you took by a great punishment.Saheeh International

O Prophet, say to those captives who are in your hands: “If Allāh knows of any good (i.e.,belief and faith) in your hearts, He will give you better than the ransom which has been taken from you and will forgive you your past sins; Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O Prophet! Say to the captives who are in your hands, ‘If Allah finds any good in your hearts, He will give you [something which is] better than what has been taken away from you, and He will forgive you, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.’Ali Quli Qarai
O Prophet, say to whoever is in your hands of the captives, "If Allāh knows [any] good in your hearts, He will give you [something] better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you; and Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful."Saheeh International
If they intend to act treacherously towards you by ransoming their men to fight against you again, then knowthat they have been unfaithful to Allāh before bydisbelieving, but He gave you power over them, and He can do the same again. Allāh is Knowing, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
But if they seek to betray you, then they have already betrayed Allah earlier, and He gave [you] power over them; and Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.Ali Quli Qarai
But if they intend to betray you - then they have already betrayed Allāh before, and He empowered [you] over them. And Allāh is Knowing and Wise.Saheeh International
Surely those Meccans who believed in Islam, emigrated and struggled with their wealth and their selves in the way of Allāh, and those people of Medina who gave shelter to the emigrants and helped them—they are guardians and friends of each other. And those Meccans who believed in Islam but had not emigrated, you have no relationship with them until they migrate. But, of course, if they ask for your help for the sake of religion, then it is your responsibility to help them. Youmay help them except against a people between whom and you there is a treaty. Allāh sees what you do.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed those who have believed and migrated and waged jihad with their possessions and persons in the way of Allah, and those who gave [them] shelter and help—they are heirs of one another. As for those who have believed but did not migrate, you have no heirdom in relation to them whatsoever until they migrate. Yet if they ask your help for the sake of religion, it is incumbent on you to help them, excepting against a people with whom you have a treaty; and Allah watches what you do.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, those who have believed and emigrated and fought with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allāh and those who gave shelter and aided - they are allies of one another. But those who believed and did not emigrate - for you there is no support of them until they emigrate. And if they seek help of you for the religion, then you must help, except against a people between yourselves and whom is a treaty. And Allāh is Seeing of what you do.Saheeh International
After the emigration of the Prophet and the Meccan Muslims to Medina, the Muhājirīn needed some local relief. To ensure their economic security and to establish brotherly relations between them and the Anṣār, the Prophet joined each Muhājir with an Anṣār in a tie of “brotherhood” which became even more enduring than the bond of blood relationship. The Anṣār volunteered to share half of everything they possessed with their Muhājir brothers.
Muhājir (pl. muhājirīn) means emigrant; a term applied to the Muslims who emigrated from Mecca to Medina. Nāṣir (pl. anṣār) means helper; a term applied to the Muslims of Medina who gave refuge to the Prophet and his followers.
As for those who disbelieve, they are friends of each other. And unless you follow this principle of distinguishing the friendship of the believers with each other and the friendshipof the unbelievers with each other, there will be persecution and great corruption in the land.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
As for the faithless, they are heirs of one another. Unless you do the same, there will be strife in the land and great corruption.Ali Quli Qarai
And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so [i.e., ally yourselves with other believers], there will be fitnah [i.e., disbelief and oppression] on earth and great corruption.Saheeh International
Those who believed, emigrated and struggled in the way of Allāh, and those who gave shelter to the emigrants and helped them— they are the true believers, they shall have forgiveness and generous provision from their Lord.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Those who have believed, migrated, and waged jihad in the way of Allah, and those who gave them shelter and help, it is they who are truly the faithful. For them shall be forgiveness and a noble provision.Ali Quli Qarai
But those who have believed and emigrated and fought in the cause of Allāh and those who gave shelter and aided - it is they who are the believers, truly. For them is forgiveness and noble provision.Saheeh International
And those who believed in Islam after you, emigrated, and struggled with you in theway of Allāh—they are of you. In the above-mentioned bond of brotherhood between the Muhājirīn and the Anṣār, some thought of even including their ‘brother-in faith’ as heirs in their estate. Then came the following verse stating that blood relations have more right to inherit than others: O Muslims! Those related by blood are nearer to each other in the Book of Allāh. Surely Allāh knows all things,S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Those who believed afterwards and migrated, and waged jihad along with you, they belong to you; but the blood relatives are more entitled to inherit from one another in the Book of Allah. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.Ali Quli Qarai
And those who believed after [the initial emigration] and emigrated and fought with you - they are of you. But those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is Knowing of all things.Saheeh International
