The Holy Prophet

20:1

Ṭā Ha!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

After verse 73:1 was revealed, the Prophet Muḥammad used to stay up for most of the night, praying to Allāh. This caused his knees to swell. Then Allāh revealed the following verse. (Ṭā Ha is one of the titles of the Prophet.)

20:2

We did not reveal the Qur’ān upon you so that you may put yourself into unnecessary trouble.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:3

We sent down the Qur’ān only as a reminder for the person who fears displeasing GodS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh—the Lord of the Universe

20:5

The Beneficent God “sat down” upon the “throne.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

As mentioned in the note under 7:54, “throne” is a metaphorical expression for might and power; and thus “sitting upon the throne” means that Allãh alone is in control of might and power, nay, He is the source of power.

20:6

Whatever is in the heavens, whatever is in the earth, whatever is between the two, and whatever is under the ground is His. His power and knowledge encompass everything; nothing is hidden from Him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:7

And if you utter a word aloud, He surely knows the secret and what is more hidden.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:8

That is Allāh—there is no god but He, and His are the Beautiful Names.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Prophet Mūsā was travelling with his family from Madyan to Egypt. When they reached the valley of Ṭuwā, they lost their way in a cold and dark night. Then, Mūsā saw a fire at a distance. You stay here while I go towards the fire; hopefully, I may be able to bring from it a firebrand for you, or I may find a guide at the fire.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

So both of you go to Fir‘awn and say: ‘We are messengers of your Lord; therefore, believe in our message and send the Israelites with us and do not punish them anymore.

Allāh said, “O Mūsā, We have tried your people after you left them, and, unfortunately, the Sāmiriy has led them astray.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:86

On hearing this, Mūsā returned to his people while he was angry and sad. He said, “O my people! Did not your Lord promise you a good promise about delivering you from Fir‘awn, providing for you in this new land and giving the Tawrāt to you?! Did the fulfillment of God’s promise about giving Tawrāt seem too long to you?! Or did you wish that the anger of your Lord should descend upon you, and so you broke your promise to me about behaving faithfully during my absence?!”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:87

They said, “We did not break our promise to you on our own accord, but we were made to carry loads of the ornaments of the people which we cast in a place prepared by Sāmiriy. This is what was suggested to us by Sāmiriy himself.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:88

After they had cast the ornaments in their place, lo! Sāmiriy brought forth a calf—a mere body with a mooing sound. Then Sāmiriy and his followers said, “This is your god and the god of Mūsā —but Mūsā has forgotten him and gone to look for him at the wrong place.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:89

What! Could they not see that the calf cannot even reply to their speech, neither did it possess the power to harm them or profit them?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:90

They continued to worship the calf although Hārūn had told them before, “O my people! Be warned that you are being tried by Sāmiriy and his calf; whereas your true Lord is the Beneficent God, so follow me and obey my order.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:91

They said, “We will continue to adhere to it until Mūsā returns to us.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:92

When Mūsā finally came, he said to Hārūn, “O Hārūn! What prevented you from putting an end to this calf worship forcefully, when you saw them going astray?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:93

Did you not follow me? Did you disobey my order?”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:94

Hārūn replied, “O son of my mother! Do not seize me by my beard nor by my head. If I had forcefully prevented these people, they would have been divided into two groups—one on our side, the other against us, and I was afraid least you would say that, ‘You have divided the children of Israel and did not observe my advice.’”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:95

Then Mūsā turned to Sāmiriy and said, “And what is the matter with you, O Sāmiriy?”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:96

Sāmiriy said, “I saw Jibrā’il, the arch- angel, whom they did not see, so I took a handful of the dust from the footstep of the messenger (i.e., Jibrā’il) and then I threw it into the cast of the calf to create the mooing sound. In this way, I let my animalistic soul seduce me.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:97

Mūsā said, “Get out of here! Your punishment in this worldly life will be a disease which will cause you to say to everyone, ‘Do not touch me.’ And moreover, there is a promise of Allāh against you which will not be broken. But before you leave, look at your god to whom you adhered continuously—We shall surely burn it, then we will scatter it in the sea a scattering!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:98

Your God is only Allāh—there is no god but He; His knowledge comprehends everything.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Day of Judgement

They will whisper, thinking that We will not hear their whisper, but We are more aware of what they will be saying, especially when the exemplary among them will be saying, “No! You tarried for one day only!”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

On that day, the people will follow the herald without any deviation; and on that day the voices will be hushed before the Beneficent God, and so you will hear nothing but a murmuring.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:109

On that day, the intercession will not benefit anyone except through a person whom the Beneficent gives permission and whose word He approves.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

The Qur’ān

20:113

Thus We have sent down the revelation as an Arabic Qur’ān, and We have varyingly and repeatedly circulated some threats in it so that the people may guard themselves against displeasing Allāh, or at the least it may serve as a reminder for them.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:114

So exalted is Allāh, the King and the Truth. O Muḥammad, do not make haste in reciting the verses of the Qur’ān before its revelation to you is completed, and say, “O My Lord! increase me in knowledge.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

This verse shows that the Prophet had the prior knowledge of the Qur’ān that is how he was able to recite even before the Angel had completed the revelation. It confirms the belief that before its gradual revelation, the Qur’ān had been revealed upon the soul of the Prophet in one piece. (See aṭ-Ṭabātabā’ī, al-Mizãn, vol. 14 [Arabic edition] p. 232.)

Prophet Adam

20:115

We had certainly advised Adam before about not approaching a certain tree, but he forgot, and We found no patience in him.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:116

When We had created Adam, We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam.” All of them prostrated except Iblīs, the Satan, who refused and was haughty.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:117

But the Shayṭān instilled an evil suggestion to Adam by saying, “O Adam! Shall I guide you to the tree of immortality and a kingdom which will not decline?”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:121

When Adam and Ḥawwa both ate of that tree, their private parts became manifest to them, and both of them started to cover themselves with the leaves of the Garden. Adam disobeyed the advisory command of his Lord, and so he acted ignorantly.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:122

Then his Lord chose Adam as His representative, and then He turned to him with forgiveness and guided him fully before sending him to the earth.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:123

Allāh said to Shayṭān and Adam: “You both get down from the Garden to the earth, some of you being the enemies of the other. Once you are on the earth, a guidance will certainly come to you from Me, and then whosoever follows My guidance, he shall not go astray nor will he be unhappy.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:124

But whosoever turns away from My remembrance, then he shall surely have a wretched life in this world and on the day of resurrection, We shall raise him blind.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:125

When such a misled person will be resurrected blind; he will say, “My Lord! Why did you raise me blind while I surely had eyesight?!”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Allāh will say, “In spite of having eyesight, when Our verses came to you, you neglected them! Similarly, today you shall fall into oblivion.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

Conclusion of the Sūrah

20:127

Thus do We recompense the person who exceeds the limits and does not believe in the verses of his Lord; and surely the chastisement of the hereafter is more severe and more lasting.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:128

Does not the reflection upon the previous generations which We have destroyed —and in whose dwellings they walk at present— guide them aright?! Surely in those events are signs for those who possess intelligence.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:129

Had not a word —deferring their punishment to the day of judgement— and an appointed term —about their life span— preceded from your Lord, a similar fate would have clanged those who exceed the limits.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:130

Therefore, O Muḥammad, bear patiently what they say, the final victory will be yours. And glorify your Lord by praising Him (1) before the rising of the sun, (2) before its setting, and praise Him (3) during some hours of the night, and also (4) during some parts of the day, so that you may be pleased.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:131

And do not turn your eyes towards what We have provided —as the splendour of the present life— to various groups of the unbelievers so that We may thereby try them; and the provision of your Lord in the hereafter is better in quality and more lasting.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:132

And command your family to pray and persevere on it. Don’t consider your worship as a favour upon Us, We do not ask you for any provision; on the contrary, We provide for you; and surely the ultimate victory is of righteousness.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:133

Even after listening to the Qur’ān, the polytheists of Mecca say, “If he brings to us a sign other than the Qur’ān from his Lord, then maybe we shall believe in him.” But has not a clear proof come to them in the previous books?! They did not believe in it, so why should We send another sign?S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:134

On the other hand, if We had destroyed them with a chastisement before this Qur’ān, they would certainly have said, “O our Lord! If you had sent a messenger to us, we would have followed your verses before we met humiliation and disgrace.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

20:135

O Muḥammad, say: “All of us are waiting for the conclusion; therefore, you too wait. Soon you will come to know who the people of the straight path are and who is guided aright.”S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
