After the event of Ghadīr Khumm, in which the Prophet Muḥammad declared ʿAlī bin Abī Ṭālib as the leader (mawla) of the Muslims after himself, Nu‘mān bin al-Ḥārith al-Fahrī came to the Prophet and questioned the validity of his action: “You asked us to testify that there is no God but Allāh and that you are the Messenger of Allāh, and you also ordered us to do jihād, pilgrimage, fasting, prayers and paying alms. We accepted all that. You were, however, not satisfied with that until you appointed this young man and said, ‘Whomsoever’s master I am, this ‘Ali is also his master!’ So is this from yourself or a command from Allāh?”
The Prophet answered, “By Allāh, besides whom there is no other god but Him, verily this is from Allāh!” Nu‘mān turned away, saying, “O Allāh! If this is truly from You, then send down a stone from heaven on me.” Allāh indeed sent down a stone on his head that killed him.
Then came the revelation:
