After the Battle of Uḥud in the 3 A.H., the unbelievers of Mecca sent a delegation consisting of Abū Sufyān, ‘Ikramah bin Abi Jahl and Abi al-A‘war as-Silmi to meet Prophet Muḥammad (s). They were accompanied in this meeting by ‘Abdullāh bin Ubay, ‘Abdullāh bin Sa‘īd bin Abī Sarah and Tu‘mah bin Ubayraq (the hypocrites of Medina).
The Meccans proposed to the Prophet that: “If you stop rejecting our gods (the Lāt, the Uzza and the Manāt) and accept that they have powers to intercede on behalf of their worshippers, then we will leave you and your God alone.”
The Prophet was distressed with such a proposal, and so Allāh revealed the clear command confirming the Islamic stance that there can be no compromise in matters of belief.
Allāh has not made for any man two hearts within him. So a Muslim cannot combine monotheism and polytheism within himself; he cannot say that worshipping Allāh is the truth and worshipping an idol is also acceptable! And He has not made your wives whose backs you liken to the backs of your mothers as your mothers—and so your words have no effect in your marriage relationship. Nor has He (Allāh) made those adopted sons whom you assert to be your sons your real sons; these are just the words of your mouths that do not change the fact that an adopted child is not areal child—Allāh speaks the truth, and He guides you to the right way.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Allah has not put two hearts within any man, nor has He made your wives whom you repudiate by zihar your mothers, nor has he made your adopted sons your [actual] sons. These are mere utterances of your mouths. But Allah speaks the truth and He guides to the [right] way.Ali Quli Qarai
Allāh has not made for a man two hearts in his interior. And He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers. And He has not made your claimed [i.e., adopted] sons your [true] sons. That is [merely] your saying by your mouths, but Allāh says the truth, and He guides to the [right] way.Saheeh International
Ẓihār: In pre-Islamic Arabian society, “ẓihār” was a form of divorce. In ẓihār, a husband would say to his wife that, “You are to me like my mother’s back,” or “Your back is like my mother’s back.” These words of repudiation by a husband were a way of divorcing his wife. Islam came and rejected this form of divorce.
Adoption: Adoption was as common in the pre-Islamic era as it is now in the West: an adopted child was considered like a biological child who also had the right to inherit, and even the prohibition of marriage within the adopted family members was enforced.
Call them by the names of their true fathers, that is more justifiable in the eyes of Allāh. However, if you do not know their fathers, then know that they are your brethren in faith and your friends and so call them as “brethren infaith” or “friends.” And there is no blame upon you in case that you made a mistake by calling them by their adopted family names. (Of course, in case your hearts was purposely bent upon calling them by their adopted family names, thenyou would be accountable.) Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Call them after their fathers. That is more just with Allah. If you do not know their fathers, then they are your brethren in the faith and your kinsmen. Excepting what your hearts may intend deliberately, there will be no sin upon you for any mistake that you may make therein. And Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allāh. But if you do not know their fathers - then they are [still] your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International
The Prophet Muḥammad has a greater claim and authority on the believers than they have upon themselves, and his wives are to beconsidered as their mothers. Those who are related by blood have a prior right over one another in the Book of Allāh in thematter of inheritance compared to the believers and the immigrants who are related to you byfaith only. Of course, the latter can get something by your doing a good deed to your friends fromthe one-third option that has been given to you inmaking of your will; this is verily written in the Book of Allāh.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
The Prophet is closer to the faithful than their own souls, and his wives are their mothers. The blood relatives are more entitled to inherit from one another in the Book of Allah than the [other] faithful and Emigrants, barring any favour you may do your comrades. This has been written in the Book.Ali Quli Qarai
The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves, and his wives are [in the position of] their mothers. And those of [blood] relationship are more entitled [to inheritance] in the decree of Allāh than the [other] believers and the emigrants, except that you may do to your close associates a kindness [through bequest]. That was in the Book inscribed.Saheeh International
Considering the Prophet’s wives as “mothers” is limited to two aspects: respect them and not to marry anyone of them after the Prophet’s demise as they are “mothers of the believers.” See verse 33:53. This designation does not change the rules of ḥijāb and decency in interaction with strangers (33:32 below), nor does it create the right of inheritance of children from their mother as described in the next sentence of the verse. Moreover, it does not accord infallibility to them (33:28-30 below).

When the Banū Naḍīr, the Jewish tribe of Medina, violated the terms of the agreement, they were expelled from the city. They settled in Khaybar and decided to take revenge against the Muslims. They contacted the Meccan unbelievers, and then twenty leaders from the Jews and fifty from the Quraysh made a pact to fight Prophet Muḥammad and the Muslims. Both groups contacted their respected allies like the tribes of Ghatfān, Asad, Aslam, Ashja‘, Kinānah and Fizārah. Eventually, a force of ten thousand soldiers marched upon Medina under the command of Abū Sufyān.
The Reaction of the Hypocrites: Remember when they came upon you fromtwo sides: the Jewish tribes came from above you (i.e., east of Medina) and the Quraysh came from below you (i.e., west of Medina), at that timefear overtook you when as if your eyes turned dull and hearts rose up to the throats, and thehypocrites and weak believers among you began to think evil thoughts of Allāh and His promise.S. After the Prophet returned from the campaign of Khaybar, some of his wives asked for the booty. When he informed them that he had divided the booty among the people, they were angry, and some of them even bragged that if he divorced them, they could marry men of their own social status.
The attitude of his wives deeply hurt the Prophet and so he separated from them and went to the house of Mārīyah al-Qībṭīyyah and stayed there for twenty-nine days. Finally, Allāh revealed the following verses:
But if you desire Allāh, His Messenger, and the Latter Abode, then be assured that Allāh has prepared for the good-doers among you a great reward.” The choice given to them was between the luxuries of this life with an amicable divorce and the hardship of this life with the Prophet; the latter choice has its special reward with Allāh only if they become good in their behaviour. This condition is further emphasized in the following verse.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)

This sentence known as “āyatu ’t-taṭhīr—the verse of purification” has generated quite a discussion among the Muslims. Although it is situated in between the long verse on the Prophet’s wives, it does not refer to them. According to many Sunni narrations (reaching close to forty), this sentence refers to the Prophet and his family (the Ahlul Bayt): Fāṭimah, ʿAlī, Ḥasan and Ḥusayn.
Besides the narrations, there is also internal evidence to that: the sentences before and after the verse of purification have feminine plural pronouns whereas this sentence itself has the masculine plural pronouns only. This difference shows that the verse of purification was revealed on its own in a different event unrelated to the Prophet’s wives.
One more important internal evidence missed by most scholars is the term “bayt”: in sentences before and after the crucial sentence, Allāh mentions “buyūt—houses” in plural referring to the houses of Prophet’s wives, but in āyatu ’t-taṭhīr, He mentions “bayt—house” in singular form. This important difference was mentioned by one of my ancestors, Syed Muḥammad Mahdi, in his Lawā’iju ’l-Aḥzān (1917).
For the Sunni sources of tafsīr and ḥadīth on this verse, see as-Suyūṭī, ad-Durru ’l-Manthūr, vol. 5, p. 197; aṭ-Ṭabarī, Jāmi‘u ’l-Bayān, vol. 22, p. 5-7, at-Tirmidhi, Ṣaḥīḥ, v. 5, p. 563, and various other commentaries.

(Allāh had already told the Prophet to marry Zaynab after her divorce so that the taboo of marrying the divorcee of one’s adopted son would be shattered completely.) And you feared men and how they would reactto Allāh’s commandment. O Muḥammad, do notworry about what the people will say because Therefore, when Zayd ended his relationship with her (Zaynab), We gave her to you as a wife so that there should be no difficulty for the believers in respect of marrying the wives of their adopted sons once they have ended their relationship with them. And Allāh’s command shall come to passS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
When you said to him whom Allah had blessed, and whom you [too] had blessed, ‘Retain your wife for yourself, and be wary of Allah,’ and you had hidden in your heart what Allah was to divulge, and you feared the people though Allah is worthier that you should fear Him, so when Zayd had got through with her, We wedded her to you, so that there may be no blame on the faithful in respect of the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have got through with them, and Allah’s command is bound to be fulfilled.Ali Quli Qarai
And [remember, O Muḥammad], when you said to the one on whom Allāh bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allāh," while you concealed within yourself that which Allāh is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allāh has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort [i.e., guilt] concerning the wives of their claimed [i.e., adopted] sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command [i.e., decree] of Allāh accomplished.Saheeh International
Zayd bin Ḥārithah was a slave gifted to the Prophet Muḥammad by his first wife, Khadījah; later, the Prophet set Zayd free and adopted him as his son.
Zaynab bint Jaḥsh was the Prophet’s cousin. As part of Islam’s campaign to eradicate racial and social discrimination among Muslims, the Prophet gave his cousin Zaynab (from the noble tribe of the Prophet) in marriage to Zayd (an ex-slave and of low social status).
The marriage of Zayd and Zaynab went sour, and so Zayd asked the Prophet’s counsel on the matter of divorcing his wife.

Muḥammad is not the father of any of your men: Zayd was not his son, and therefore his wife was not the Prophet’s daughter-in-law. But he is the Messenger of Allāh and the Last of the prophets: as the last Messenger, he had to marry Zaynab so that the relationships based on adoption are fully considered null and void. And as the Last Prophet, only he could break off this taboo. And Allāh has knowledge of everything.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he is the Apostle of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets, and Allah has knowledge of all things.Ali Quli Qarai

(8) This last type of marriage without dowry is exclusively for you and not for the other believers—We know what We had decreed upon them concerning their wives and their slave-girls—so that there may be no difficulty for you; and Allāh is Forgiving, MercifulS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O Prophet! Indeed We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those whom your right hand owns, of those whom Allah gave you as spoils of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncle, and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncle, and the daughters of your maternal aunts who migrated with you, and a faithful woman if she offers herself to the Prophet and the Prophet desires to take her in marriage (a privilege exclusively for you, not for [the rest of] the faithful; We know what We have made lawful for them with respect to their wives and those whom their right hands own, so that there may be no blame on you ), and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
O Prophet, indeed We have made lawful to you your wives to whom you have given their due compensation and those your right hand possesses from what Allāh has returned to you [of captives] and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who emigrated with you and a believing woman if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her; [this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers. From those women who gift themselves to you, O Muḥammad, you may reject whomsoever from them you wish, and you may accept for yourself whomsoever you wish. And Allāh knows what is in your hearts, and Allāh is All-Knowing, Forbearing.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
You may put off whichever of them you wish and consort with whichever of them you wish, and there is no sin upon you [in receiving again] any [of them] whom you may seek [to consort with] from among those you have set aside [earlier]. That makes it likelier that they will be comforted and not feel unhappy, and all of them will be pleased with what you give them. Respecting the Prophet’s Privacy: O those who believe! Do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal. Nor should you go there before time waiting for the plates with food. Yes, when you are invited, then enter; and when you have taken the meal, then disperse, and there is no need tosit in anticipation of having a conversation. That puts the Prophet in inconvenience, but he was too polite to ask you to leave, but Allāh does not shy away from the truth. And when you visit the Prophet’s house, andyou need to ask for something from his wives, then ask them from behind a curtain—that is purer for your hearts and their hearts. It does not behoove you that you should hurt the Messenger of Allāh by disobeying theselaws, nor that you should marry his wives after him ever—that surely is a grave sin in the eyes of AllāhS. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
O you who have faith! Do not enter the Prophet’s houses for a meal until you are granted permission, without hanging around for it to be readied. But enter when you are invited, and disperse when you have taken your meal, without cozying up for chats. Such conduct on your part offends the Prophet, and he is ashamed of [asking] you [to leave]; but Allah is not ashamed of [expressing] the truth. When you ask [his] womenfolk for something, do so from behind a curtain. That is more chaste for your hearts and theirs. You should not offend the Apostle of Allah, nor may you ever marry his wives after him. Indeed that would be a grave [sin] with Allah.Ali Quli Qarai
O you who have believed, do not enter the houses of the Prophet except when you are permitted for a meal, without awaiting its readiness. But when you are invited, then enter; and when you have eaten, disperse without seeking to remain for conversation. Indeed, that [behavior] was troubling the Prophet, and he is shy of [dismissing] you. But Allāh is not shy of the truth. And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not [conceivable or lawful] for you to harm the Messenger of Allāh or to marry his wives after him, ever. Indeed, that would be in the sight of Allāh an enormity.Saheeh International

Ṣalawāt: Special Prayer for the Prophet: Verily Allāh and His angels shower theirspecial blessings upon the Prophet, therefore, O you who believe, pray for Allāh’s specialblessings upon him and salute him in the way he deserves to be saluted.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who have faith! Invoke blessings on him and invoke Peace upon him in a worthy manner.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, Allāh confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allāh to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allāh to grant him] peace.Saheeh International
The shortest method of asking for Allāh’s special blessings (ṣalawāt) for the Prophet is as following: Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammadin wa Āl-i Muḥammad–O Allāh, shower blessings upon Muḥammad and his progeny. This is the correct way of reciting the ṣalawāt as taught to us by the Prophet himself. Unfortunately, majority of Muslims omit the “wa Āl-i Muḥammad” in their ṣalawāt. The full ṣalawāt as mentioned by the Prophet can be seen in al-Bukhāri, aṣ-Ṣaḥīḥ, vol. 6 (Arabic & English edition) p. 302; vol. 4 p. 385; at-Ta’rīkh al-Kabīr, vol. 3, p. 383-4; as-Suyūṭī, ad-Durru ’l-Manthūr, vol. 5, p. 216, 218; aṭ-Ṭabarānī, al-Mu‘jamu ’l-Kabīr, vol. 19, p. 116.

Surely We offered the trust of vicegerency to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, but they declined to take it on and feared that responsibility. However, the human being took it on—he surely was unjust and ignorant!S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Indeed We presented the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, but they refused to undertake it and were apprehensive of it; but man undertook it. Indeed he is most unjust and ignorant.Ali Quli Qarai
Indeed, We offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant.Saheeh International
The position of vicegerency (al-khilāfa, al-wilāya) is based on knowledge and justice. The heavens, the earth and the mountains do not have the potential of acquiring knowledge or justice. A mountain, for example, cannot be described as “knowledgeable or just” or “ignorant or unjust;” whereas the human being has the potential of acquiring knowledge as well as the quality of justice. By describing the human being as “unjust and ignorant,” Allāh probably wants to point out the potential of knowledge and justice in the human being. The description of “unjust and ignorant” is only applicable to one who has the potential of becoming just and knowledgeable.
Vicegerency and role of guidance was provided to humans so that, consequently, Allāh may chastise the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women and the polytheist men and polytheist women, and turn towards the believing men and the believing women with forgiveness for Allāh is Forgiving, Merciful.S. M. Rizvi (Explanatory)
Allah will surely punish the hypocrites, men and women, and the polytheists, men and women, and Allah will turn clemently to the faithful, men and women, and Allah is all-forgiving, all-merciful.Ali Quli Qarai
[It was] so that Allāh may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allāh may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.Saheeh International
